Water Mold Damage On Wall Disaster may strike at any time in Fort Lee. Call SERVPRO for the water damage restoration services needed for your property.

Water Restoration Helps Business Operations Resume

Regardless of the source, water that finds its way into your warehouse's interior in Fort Lee can quickly become a problem. Once there, it can start damaging the interior and anything stored inside. For your company to get the most out of water restoration, SERVPRO needs to prepare your facility.

Specific steps make water restoration faster for Fort Lee area businesses. These precautions also protect your inventory and equipment from water's harmful destruction, including rot, mold, and corrosion.

For some aspects, we work with your employees, such as moving inventory and other valuable items into safer areas. Other aspects of preparing for water restoration require specialized skills and training. Our IICRC-certified technicians carry out the following:

  • Handling the source of the water,
  • Removing the water, and
  • Drying out the facility.

Flooding, broken pipes or sprinkler systems, a torn roof during a storm, and many other possible situations can initiate a catastrophe in your warehouse. Our technicians know how to respond to each of these and stop the water threatening to damage your investment.

We always scale our services to the needs of our customers' situations, so water extraction and removal might begin with hand-held wands, a riding extraction unit, or our powerful pump truck. While we do this, we are also wiping down and drying anything that is more prone to damage from high humidity, keeping an eye out for electrical and gas hazards, and taking baseline readings to help with the drying process and the restoration stage.

More than removing the water is needed for restoration to begin, however. We also need to establish dry conditions that pose no risk to new materials after their installation and also protect the contents in your building. Airflow is very efficient at getting things dry, but we add to it with directed heat. For large-scale flooding, we also use desiccant machines.

Fire damage restoration for your Fort Lee home involves returning the property to its preloss condition. SERVPRO has professionally trained and experienced technicians who can help you anytime. Rely on FSRT fire and smoke damage technicians to get it done right. Restoration for fires presents challenges different from routine repair and cleaning. The combined impact on a structure from intense heat, burning fire, smoke residues, and moisture from the efforts of firefighters challenge our team to provide various services.

Restoration Services

Fire restoration services can be put into five categories:

  • Mitigation Services – The goal of mitigation is to secure the structure and stop further damage. This can include winterizing the plumbing to prevent frozen pipes, boarding up openings, and establishing a temporary electricity source.
  • Structural Cleaning – The cleaning process focuses on removing smoke residues ad deodorizing odors. Our technicians consult and advise you on which components can be cleaned. Repair and replacement are needed for anything that won’t respond to cleaning.
  • Contents Cleaning –   Sometimes, the contents can be cleaned on-site, though often, we pack out the contents for precision cleaning at our warehouse.
  • Specialty Restoration – For specialty cleaning of certain items like electronics, dry cleaning of clothing, furniture restoring, and cleaning expensive artwork, we can partner with other professionals specially trained for this type of work.
  • Reconstructive Services – Sometimes, structural components can be damaged to the point they can’t be restored. Reconstructing and repairing fire-damaged structural components can require different skills than standard home remodeling. We prepare the unit to be free of odors, dry, and ready for build-backs as needed.

SERVPRO Provides Reliable Flood Damage Restoration in Fort Lee

blue submersible pump iron SERVPRO provides various types of water pumps to remove flooding, especially contaminated water, from your Fort Lee property.

SERVPRO Uses Advanced Tools to Restore Flood Damage in Fort Lee Homes

Flood damage restoration of your Fort Lee home needs to happen fast to prevent any lasting aesthetic and structural issues. The longer the floodwater stays in contact with the building material, the more harm it can cause to its structural integrity.

Consequently, professional restorers like SERVPRO prioritize water extraction when dealing with flood damage to your Fort Lee home. As flood water often contains debris and solids, restorers need different types of pumps to remove the standing water from your property. The goal of restorers is to remove as much water as quickly as possible.

Types of Pumps SERVPRO Techs use

A pump is one of the most useful pieces of equipment to remove water from a flooded structure. SERVPRO techs use different types of pumps that vary in mechanism and capacity during flood restoration.

Centrifugal pumps are commonly used in the restoration industry. A centrifugal pump converts the rotational energy from a motor to power for moving fluid against gravity. The centrifugal pumps we use in flood restoration include-

  • Self-priming trash pumps
  • High-pressure pumps
  • Electric submersible pumps

The type of pump required depends on the size of solids present in floodwater and the distance through which water needs to be transported.

Electric Submersible Pumps

As these pumps are portable, work on electricity and provide continuous operation, they are the most common types used for water extraction. Submersible pumps are available in various capacities and can remove from 100 to 18,000 gallons of water per hour. Large industrial units can provide up to 265 feet of discharge head. However, if the floodwater contains solids or other debris suspended, then trash pumps are the best option.

Fort Lee Home Suffering a Water Loss? Attention DIY-Selfers, Call SERVPRO

SERVPRO Air Movers Unless you have a large supply of air movers, SERVPRO says to call us for Water Removal in your Fort Lee home

The Perks of Opting for Professional Water Damage Restoration in Fort Lee

When you encounter a water loss problem in your home, your first instinct might be to deal with the problem on your own. While you can grapple with some problems in Fort Lee, others are complex and need professional assistance.

You may not have all the tools required to handle the water damage in your Fort Lee home effectively. As a homeowner, buying water restoration equipment can be uneconomical because you might not need to use them often. Besides, some water restoration equipment is expensive, and you may end up spending much money on it compared to the cost you would incur if you hired SERVPRO to restore your home.

If you are new to using cleaning tools, you might end up hurting yourself or causing more damage to your property. For instance, if you are not aware enough to eliminate all the moisture from your home, mold can grow in the affected areas.

After a water intrusion incident, the most affected areas of a home are usually the carpet, upholstered furniture, and drywall. Water can soak into floors, walls, and furnishings within a short time. We use proper techniques to remove water from affected surfaces and dry them out. Cleaning up after a leak requires using powerful pumps, air movers, and dehumidifiers.

It is crucial to dry water-damaged structures and contents as quickly as possible. Our crew does its best to remove all the water and moisture from home using advanced tools and techniques. We are knowledgeable about the science of drying (psychrometry) and can dry your home effectively. For instance, we can use Low Grain Refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers to reduce the relative humidity in your home. They may be more effective than dehumidifiers (desiccant) in drying hardwood flooring and other difficult materials.

Our SERVPRO team can also use portable electric heaters to direct heat to specific areas of your house. Heating materials like wood help speed up the evaporation of moisture. Our team follows the instructions or safety recommendations of the manufacturers of heating devices to avoid ruining the building materials and contents we are heating and to ensure the safety of the occupants.

Sometimes, water ruins flooring and walls to the point of needing replacement. However, we believe in salvaging most of the building materials. We know you chose your furniture, flooring, and other items for a reason, and we desire to enable you to keep them all. Our restoration techniques minimize tear-out, time, and expense.

A water intrusion incident can be a devastating time for any homeowner. Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 to handle the problem.

How Long Does it Take to Dry a Commercial Property?

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

Measurement Tool SERVPRO uses science like a Psychrometric device to grapple with water extraction and damage in Edgewater commercial sites

SERVPRO Provides Efficient Commercial Water Removal and Drying to Edgewater Businesses in Need.

What is efficient drying, and how can it help a business?

Water intrusion events can occur in your Edgewater business at any time. The reasons for these issues can come from a variety of sources. Perhaps somebody forgets to turn off a faucet, or a sewer main backs up unexpectedly. These issues can frequently impact the ability of your business to function. SERVPRO understands how temporary closure can affect a business. Our technicians have training on how air, water, temperature, and materials interact. This knowledge helps us put efficient drying plans that can return your business to its pre-damaged condition.

How does water intrusion damage Edgewater business premises?

  • Large amounts of liquid contact the structure causing harm
  • Water vapor evaporating can harm the upper walls and ceilings of your property
  • High humidity levels can contribute to secondary damage to microbial growth

What Is Psychrometry, And How Does It Affect Commercial Restoration?

Psychrometry refers to atmospheric readings. When enough water enters your building to require commercial water removal services in Edgewater, a drying procedure must be implemented. SERVPRO water restoration technicians (WRT) manipulate the indoor atmosphere using drying equipment. By ensuring that indoor air remains dry enough to encourage evaporation, our technicians can speed up the time it takes to return your business to a pre-damaged condition. We often return multiple times to monitor psychrometric readings and measure the effectiveness of our drying plan.

What materials affect drying times?

  • Materials with high permeance absorb water quickly but can also dry faster
  • Vapor barriers prevent moisture from passing. These can raise the overall humidity of the area
  • Hygroscopic materials quickly absorb water vapor. These may include carpets, insulation, or upholstery

If your business becomes affected by water intrusion, contact SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

Is Fire Restoration Available Day or Night in Cliffside Park?

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

Big Fire Flame The goal of any fire damage project is to make it “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO Provides 24-Hour Fire Damage Restoration for Customers in Cliffside Park

You have enough on your mind after a Cliffside Park housefire without worrying about when you can call for restoration services. SERVPRO has crews ready to go seven days a week, 24 hours a day. This gives you peace of mind knowing that expert restoration is available when needed. Not only are we Faster to Any Size Disaster, but you can also count on us to make sure we do what we need to save you money with fast, efficient cleanup and recovery. A lot of this can be achieved with the on-site cleaning methods that we have perfected and convenient, controlled demolition services.

What Happens with My Belongings?

It can be devastating to know that you lost a lot of personal belongings in a house fire. However, we do whatever possible to ensure that we salvage what we can once you call us for help with fire damage in Cliffside Park. Our skilled technicians have a lot of training in advanced techniques, tools, and cleaning methods.

Most of the time, we do what we can to clean fire-damaged items on-site. However, we sometimes have to remove items for further cleaning with our pack-out services. We can bring things to our warehouse for detailed cleaning of items stricken with smoke, soot, odors, and other degrees of damage.

For on-site cleaning, some of the different strategies that we use to remove odors and soiling from your household contents include:

Chemical Agents: Some products are better at eliminating residues than others by emulsion. We have a range of chemical agents for protecting the surface while quickly rinsing away soot and smoke residue with the help of pressurized water.

Deodorization: Even items not directly within the fire-loss zone become penetrated by foul odors. We have EPA-registered products and advanced equipment that help us to neutralize odors, including:

  • Hydroxyl machines
  • Thermal foggers
  • Ozone generators
  • Air scrubbers

Agitation: There are many cases where on-site cleaning is more accessible when our technicians can reduce soil buildup on surfaces. Light, medium, or heavy agitation is beneficial because of dusting or working on surfaces with steel wool.

What About Moisture from Extinguishing the Flames?

Something important with any fire damage project is ensuring no moisture lingers throughout the cleanup process. Odors and mold can spread, which boosts the chances of secondary damage that creates added costs and potential health hazards. SERVPRO technicians can access various moisture detection tools to ensure no hidden moisture pockets are left behind.

  • Households naturally contain mold spores. However, these spores remain dormant until germination occurs, such as when materials get soaked from dousing the flames of a house fire.
  • Mold spores increase within 24 to 72 hours after exposure to increased moisture levels.
  • Our team utilizes specialized moisture detection technology to locate any areas where water may have migrated in your home. Common areas to check to include the areas behind walls and baseboards, under flooring, and hidden nooks and crannies.
  • Not only do we dry all areas thoroughly and apply EPA-registered anti-microbial solutions that work to inhibit mold growth.

Will My Home Still Smell Like a Fire Happened?

Fire is a common concern for many homeowners. Soot and smoke residue left after a fire can create a constant reminder if not addressed adequately. If the particulates made their way into your HVAC system, merely turning on your heating or cooling can cause foul odors to resurface. We have specialized cleaning techniques and sealants that we can use on your HVAC system to ensure this does not happen.

Many particles remain invisible to the naked eye, so our IICRC-certified technicians use a multi-layer approach for smoke odor elimination. This gets done using thermal foggers that heat chemical deodorants that bind to odor molecules. We also have air scrubber machines with powerful HEPA filtration to pull particulates from the air throughout the loss zone.

Will My Home Be Structurally Sound?

We only enter your home after first responders deem it safe for entry. With any fire damage project, our crew thoroughly inspects all structural elements to ensure safety and integrity. Additionally, we often use controlled demolition for materials that are not salvageable, including carpet and drywall. If the insulation within your walls has taken on a great deal of smoke damage, we can remove the first few inches to replace it with all brand-new materials.

The goal of any fire damage project is to make it “Like it never even happened” so that your home gets restored to pre-fire condition. Call us at SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 to have a crew deployed to your location for emergency restoration services.

Shower Drain Leaks in Edgewater Solved with Water Removal

Dry Up a Shower Drain Leak with Water Removal

Taking a nice hot shower after an entire day of yard work around your Edgewater home, you may not realize your shower drain is leaking all over the floor downstairs. When this happens, you need emergency water removal. SERVPRO is there when you need a professional team to restore your home, so it’s “Like it never even happened.”

In Edgewater, to protect homes from severe water damage, SERVPRO performs water removal services. Because damage from water happens very quickly, our crews also act and work fast to remove the water to get things dry, eliminating a lot of potential damage our customers’ properties might have sustained.

Between calling us and the time that we arrive, there are some things that you can do to help us perform water removal work even faster and more effectively. These are small things you can do, including:

  • Having any small furniture items removed out of the way,
  • If the air outside is warmer and drier than inside, please open up some windows and doors, and
  • Let others in the home know that the tub and shower are off-limits until further notice.

End tables, coffee tables, smaller chairs, and the like might not only stain your carpeting when wet, but they can leave deeper-than-necessary depressions in the carpet and pad.

Moisture moves from cool, damp areas toward warm, dry places because of its natural inclination for equilibrium. Clearing the air of any humidity gives us a head start on removing misplaced water entirely from your home’s living space.

Leaks like this are never self-sealing and require a licensed plumber. We work with several and can give you their information. As soon as the plumber has finished fixing the leak, we can start working on your ceiling and any other areas that require restoration, even as we continue drying the area.

Property owners can call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 for fast assistance with this and any other disaster.

Flames and Extinguisher Don’t let fire damage overwhelm you, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Fort Lee.

A Note on Some of the Aspects of Fire Restoration

The damage caused during a fire can be extensive, so SERVPRO does everything conceivable to keep fire restoration costs in Fort Lee as low as possible for our B2B customers. Even though we use the latest methods and implement the newest technologies, there are times when salvaging something after a fire is an impossible-to-reach goal.

Advising our customers before, during, and after fire restoration in Fort Lee helps them understand any limitations and prevents disappointment. This communication also helps us know when certain materials, equipment, inventory, or other damaged items need extra attention. When necessary, we can contact experienced restoration specialists for you.

Fires create a filthy environment. The particles in the soot can carry electric charges, creating challenges on top of what we are already facing. One of these is reoccurring soot tags. We use special solvents that help dissipate such spider-web-like sooty residues on ceilings and other areas. Here are a few things that are often done that help businesses near us recover after a fire:

  • Return inventories of damaged, partially damaged, and in need of restoration items for a more manageable claims process with your insurance carrier.
  • Rush cleaning on areas deemed crucial to your business.
  • Round-the-clock restoration or only during off-hours, or any other schedule that works best for your business needs.

Describing specific damages by an impartial third party can help minimize the need for you to explain losses to your insurance provider. Some items need replacing after a fire simply because of their very nature.

Closing your public restroom can help us finish the lobby or kitchen faster, helping you reopen sooner, for example. Or we might be able to divide part of your business, so the more damaged area’s restoration progresses more slowly and thoroughly than other less damaged sections.

Let us know if you need us to work over the weekend or only during regular business hours. We can fit it into your schedule.

How Long Does Repair From Water Damage Take In Edgewater?

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

Water on the Floor For fast and efficient service call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

SERVPRO techs work hard to restore your Edgewater home from any size of water loss

The crucial element in water loss cleanup and repair begins with how quickly the restoration efforts began. The long elevated moisture conditions remain in an Edgewater home, the more potential for costly damage and the need for replacement of ruined structural elements as well as possessions. Drying a home on your own can result in wet areas on carpet and other places weeks after the initial event occurred. This works against property owners because, during that time, pungent odors that need removal and mold, which require professional remediation, may invade the home.

What are Common Types of Water Damage Repair Needed?

When SERVPRO handles water damage repair in local Edgewater properties, it is not unusual to find that the property owners have already attempted some cleanup. One typical error that can cause more damage is using bleach and water mixtures to clean surfaces after a water loss. Bleach can ruin seals and finishes on many types of surfaces. Before cleaning any contents in the home affected by the water, the techs test the surfaces to determine the construction materials and the cleaning method that will deliver the best outcome.

New Jersey winters can be brutal, and homeowners that take the time to winterize their exposed plumbing tend to fare better than their counterparts that do not. When the water in a pipe freezes, it expands, and the result is a suddenly broken pipe that is gushing water.

Because the nature of water causes it to run throughout the loss area, it can be challenging to nail down every area with excessive moisture. Signs that water remains within the structure are:

  • Sheetrock that buckles or deteriorates
  • Floorboards with signs of warping
  • Loose, delaminated tiles
  • Musty odors that do not diminish
  • Water stains and visible mold

Can SERVPRO Restore Water-Damaged Sheetrock?

The trained and certified techs handle each water loss restoration job in the same manner, even though each situation is unique to the structure and contents within. The techs scope the property to determine how large the loss area is using their moisture detection equipment. These devices "see" behind walls and under flooring to determine if seepage occurred.

Sheetrock, in particular, attracts water and then pulls it upward as it absorbs moisture, also known as wicking. The reaction of the building materials is to buckle or warp. The proactive application once water intrudes on sheetrock is to measure above the present waterline and cut away the ruined area plus a few inches to eliminate any further loss. When making repairs, it involves cutting a piece of replacement sheetrock to fit in the space left open once the property gets dried. This attention to detail when performing controlled demolition actions assists homeowners in realizing less loss from structural repairs as the techs remove the minimum possible during cleanup.

Water with Sewage or Contaminants

Suppose a homeowner had put a large amount of drain cleaner down the pipes before it backed up or the water contained sewage. In that case, SERVPRO techs could handle the cleanup using their specialized extraction equipment and protective gear. This type of water loss needs careful handling and disposal. Additionally, surfaces getting cleaned often need a neutralizing cleaning agent to eliminate the caustic nature of some of the drain cleaners, and antimicrobial and antibacterial solutions get applied to sewage-laden water to make it safer during removal.

Most water damage cleanup requires odor control methods on some level, but it is almost always a must-have when the sewage is part of the issue. The techs have an array of ways to eliminate smells so that once the restoration services are over, there are no odorous reminders of the water loss.

SERVPRO Pays Special Attention to Mold

The techs undergo comprehensive training, and that includes not only a large number of facets for handling water damage but also second issues such as odors and mold. SERVPRO techs know mold spores are naturally occurring airborne spores present both inside and outside of properties. The process for remediation is a multi-layered approach to eliminate not only the mold colonies but also the circumstances they are thriving in the environment through the use of:

  •   Professional drying equipment
  •   Antimicrobial sealants
  •   Abatement tools for dried colonies

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 has a broad array of extraction and drying equipment to handle water damage repair and return your home to its pre-damaged condition.

What Does Psychrometry Mean?

7/14/2022 (Permalink)

Illustration of 365 days a year Our experienced teams of technicians are always available to help you. Call any time.

SERVPRO Specialists in Cliffside Park Use the Study of Air to Tackle Damage After a Flood.

After a flood, the last thing you probably care about is learning a new word like psychrometry (psychrometrics). However, how the properties of air interact with each other are essential to the restoration of your Cliffside Park home. It is the measurement of temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, and dew point that restoration specialists use to determine conditions for drying your home after a flood.

Why are Temperature and Humidity Important?

Optimal Drying Conditions are Directly Related to Temperature and Humidity

Flood damage in your Cliffside Park Home typically also means higher humidity levels. Warm air can retain more moisture than cold air. The more moisture in the air, the higher the humidity; it is often referred to as the humidity ratio, which measures the grains of moisture per pound of dry air (GPP). Grains of moisture is a unique unit of measurement that boils down to about 7,000 grains of moisture, equaling about a pint of water. When there's moisture in the air, it is heavier than dry air and can cause residual damage if not adequately dried.

Why Should I Worry About Condensation in My Home?

  • Saturated air that can no longer hold any more water vapor reaches the dew point temperature, causing condensation.
  • Excess condensation after a flood can impede the drying process and damage further.
  • Hopefully, you do not see condensation while SERVPRO technicians work in your home because they control the temperature with the HVAC system and reduce humidity with dehumidifiers.

SERVPRO specialists understand the ins and outs of psychrometric calculations and use a chart or wheel to determine and track their drying progress for each project they undertake. For 24/7 assistance, contact SERVPRO Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

SERVPRO Has the Equipment and Training Needed for Water Damage Remediation

Fort Lee has a fascinating history. It was the site of many historically significant events during the Revolutionary War. Also, many people are surprised to learn that the early film industry had its start here. Your hotel guests enjoy taking in these venues and returning to comfortable lodgings in your tastefully appointed accommodations. If a water crisis threatens to interfere, you risk losing revenue, and your customers miss chances to build memories.

Common Water Loss Issues

A supply line break or a negligent guest who walks away from a filling tub can cause extensive water damage to your Fort Lee inn. You need help fast, and your housekeeping crew has neither the specialized training nor the commercial-grade equipment to make short work of a disaster.

Professional Training and Cutting-Edge Equipment

SERVPRO managers and technicians master Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) courses in preparation for delivering high-quality water mitigation and remediation services to your property. We can scale efforts up or down to manage any size of a water emergency. We answer calls 24/7 and send a project manager and crew out to your lodging center as soon as possible. Our crew lead evaluates the scenario presented while devising an individualized plan for your business.

Speed Is Crucial

IICRC-certified Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) start work immediately. Service vehicles stock water removal and structural drying equipment to avoid delays. We use submersible pumps on water deeper than two inches and wanded extractors for fluids spread across floors. If carpeting is wet, SERVPRO follows mitigation protocols to prevent water from spreading to dry areas using the extractors. Our team is skilled at drying carpeting in place with weighted extractors if indicated.

Technology Is Essential

Thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters help SERVPRO trace the migration of water into building cavities or structural components. We use controlled demolition techniques like flood cuts to release water from behind walls and open those areas for more efficient structural drying. Once all the liquid water exits the affected spaces, our Applied Structural Drying (ASD) technicians set up perimeters of air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to move water out of structures and into the air as vapor. State-of-the-art dehumidifiers capture the moisture for disposal.

Your guests can visit Fort Lee Historic Park Visitor Center or Barrymore Film Center and return to a clean, dry suite because of swift remediation of a water crisis. Call (201) 496-6024 to alert SERVPRO of Fort Lee that you need assistance. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

How Can I Stop Mold Damage in My Fort Lee House?

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Avoid Mold Damage Remediation Mistakes in Fort Lee

Applying bleach directly and scrubbing the surface is a short-term solution to mold damage. You need professional Fort Lee mold remediation services to stop it from coming back.

Why Does Mold Return After Bleaching A Surface?

The mold damage that reappears on surfaces in your Fort Lee home is likely a symptom of a larger microbial growth issue. Clearing away mold using disinfectant or bleach is a short-term method of controlling growth. However, if mold returns after cleaning, there is an underlying issue that could be spreading throughout your property. SERVPRO Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) can identify the root causes of mold growth and perform the necessary steps to reduce and control it on your property.

Where can mold grow in my home?

  • Inside wall, ceiling, or floor cavities
  • Beneath furnishings or fittings
  • On natural materials that are wet or damp

How do you fix recurring mold issues?

Finding the source of a mold problem is essential to remediation. Key signifiers of hidden mold growth in the home may be musty odors or visible signs of growth. These indicators suggest that the source of the issue may be behind a wall or on a hidden damp spot. To remove mold, we need to control moisture. Controlling moisture may include drying inside wall cavities or placing dehumidifiers in the affected area to slow mold growth. When cleaning colonies, it is essential to apply negative air pressure. Mold spores are microscopic and can spread unnoticed throughout your home. Negative air pressure provides a vacuum to prevent mold spores from spreading during aggressive remediation.

Identifying and remediating the source of mold is the only way to prevent it from returning. Contact SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 to stop mold from growing in your home.

Fire Restoration for Carpets in Fort Lee Homes

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Door And Items Damaged By Fire SERVPRO is prepared with restoration equipment and experienced technicians.

Carpets Require Several Types of Fire Damage Restoration

Potentially hundreds of surface types exist in your home, so there is no set method of restoring impacted flooring after fire damage. The typical installation of carpeting alone features multiple levels that could be affected by smoke and fire effects, including:

  • Surface fiber layer
  • Backing material
  • Padding
  • Subflooring

Removing Loose Debris from the Surface

Fire restoration for Fort Lee properties begins with managing the presence of debris after combustion and extinguishment. Because flooring takes the brunt of this damage, loose soils can heavily impact carpets. We use vacuums to pull up many smoke solids and charred debris.

Assessing for Widespread Damage

However, fires and their extent of damage might not be contained to the outermost surface layer of flooring. In some situations, smoke and water damage could penetrate the padding and subflooring levels under the right circumstances. A careful evaluation is necessary, often involving untacking the carpet temporarily to inspect layers underneath.

Bonnet and Hot Extraction Cleaning

Cleaning a carpet, especially after fire and smoke damage requires powerful tools from our stock. We have several carpet cleaning implements, often leaning heavily on bonnet cleaning and hot water extraction units from our inventory. These infuse pressurized water to the backing material of the carpet and rapidly extract it, usually dislodging and removing debris and soils along with this cycle.

Replacing Stained Carpeting

Wet conditions make staining more likely in post-fire environments. Even with the deep cleaning measures, we can implement, the cleanup might not be sufficient to restore a damaged carpet's original color and brightness. In these instances, our licensed general contractors must pull up the flooring and replace it as needed.

With carpeting such a common flooring type for modern homes, our professionals must anticipate cleaning these materials when fire losses occur. Our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team provides thorough mitigation and deep cleaning solutions to protect carpeting when possible after soot and odor exposures. Call us today at (201) 496-6024.

What You Should Do When an Especially Rainy Season Floods Your Fort Lee Home

Having a home located near a river can be a fantastic experience, except when said river causes flood damage to your property. Due to an incredibly rainy season, the Hudson river collected a significant amount of water and became dangerously full during the rainy season. Unfortunately, the water became too much after another thunderstorm, and your home took the hit.

Fortunately for you, the flood damage to your Fort Lee home was not catastrophic. As the water level rose, your home, which is located on a slight hill, managed only to suffer water damage in the basement. The floodwaters rushed into your home through an open basement window and pooled around your laundry room.

Understandably, you are concerned about the concrete floor in your basement, your washing and drying machine, and the furniture in your laundry room. The most beneficial thing for your home upon discovering the flood is to call for professional cleanup and restoration services. The sooner a company, like SERVPRO, arrives at your home to take over the remediation, the better.

Here at SERVPRO, we specialize in water damage restoration of any kind. We always hurry to your home; we're Faster To Any Size Disaster. After taking your call, a team of our talented and highly certified technicians can arrive at your home promptly.

After our Estimator assesses the damage to your property, we can craft a remediation plan and get right to work. Our first job is to get the water and any debris that came with it out of your home. We can use advanced technological devices, such as high-powered pumps, extraction wands, and wet/dry vacuums to remove the standing water.

Our SERVPRO techs can further their assessment and proceed to the next course of action. Because the water in your basement sat overnight, we can make flood cuts to the drywall inside. Removing it can ensure that all damaged material is removed and minimize the chances of mold growth. Once the damaged material is gone, we can focus on pulling excess moisture out of the structure of your home with drying equipment and then connect you with a contractor for the drywall. Once finished, you may return to your home "Like it never even happened."

If flood damage has struck, never wait. Speak with SERVPRO of Fort Lee immediately by phoning (201) 496-6024. Day or night, we're here to help you.

The Impacts of Fire Damage

A fire incident might destroy the doors and windows, leaving openings that can be an invitation to vandalism. SERVPRO technicians help by boarding up any opening to safeguard the property from additional damage.

Extensive property damage might spread even in rooms untouched by flames. Usually, heat softens window glass, chars wood, melts plastic, and causes paint to blister. Also, most household appliances are made of metal and plastic, and even if they are still standing, they probably have sustained damage. After flames are put out, damage may still occur because many of the burned or melted synthetic materials in your home continue to emit malodors.

Smoke damage can be severe as the particles permeate everything and the foul odor requires some expertise to remove. Additionally, ash and soot stick to floors, walls, and furnishings, causing additional damage. Traditional cleaning methods might aid in removing visible smoke residues, but smoke seeps into crevices, cracks, and pores that such cleaning methods miss. Our crew can effectively remove smoke odors with equipment like thermal foggers and ozone generators.

Variables That Impact Repair Options

  • How long the fire burned
  • The intensity of the fire
  • Need for material removal

SERVPRO of Fort Lee is committed to producing exceptional fire restoration to every home damaged by fire. Call us at (201) 496-6024. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

SERVPRO is Your First Choice to Remediate Mold Damage in Fort Lee

5/12/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment drying floor Unresolved water damage becomes breeding grounds for mold. SERVPRO has the knowledge to eliminate the water source and remove the mold.

Remediating Attic Mold Damage in a Fort Lee Home

There are over 100,000 known species of mold globally, with 1,000 varieties in the US alone. While mold is a natural part of any environment and is found in almost any building, it is crucial to keep these fungi and bacteria populations under control with professional-grade remediation. As long as there is sufficient moisture, oxygen, and organic material to feed on, mold can thrive for long periods, which can eventually damage structural materials.

If your Fort Lee residence requires mold damage remediation, IICRC-certified SERVPRO technicians are always available to remove mold from your house and restore it to a pre-damaged condition. This crew receives extensive training in mold remediation and related damages. It takes great care to salvage structures while saving homeowners time and money.

SERVPRO Training & Education

Technicians and franchise owners are required to learn the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification standards and best practices in various disaster situations. These include water and fire restoration, mold remediation, carpet, and upholstery cleaning, as well as other restoration services that can aid homeowners. Employee certification training covers all of this in thorough detail, including safety measures, calculations, scientific theory, and much more.

All staff also have access to continuous education through online courses that are voluntary and self-paced. SERVPRO dedicates itself to ensuring that staff members stay at the forefront of disaster mitigation knowledge and techniques to maintain a high standard of service for the community.

How SERVPRO Can Help

One of the initial steps for remediating mold is establishing containment spaces to prevent spores from spreading. Technicians take great care not to introduce unaffected areas to materials impacted by mold spores. Mold containment measures can include a variety of safety measures, such as:

  • Implementing plastic sheeting as a containment barrier
  • Sealing HVAC vents to prevent duct system contamination
  • Designating "clean rooms" so that technicians can safely enter, leave, and decontaminate their equipment and other materials without affecting other areas of the home
  • Installing 6mm polypropylene sheeting over doorways
  • Establishing negative air pressure in affected areas

SERVPRO of Fort Lee strives to leave your home looking "Like it never even happened." You can call (201) 496-6024 today for rapid disaster cleanup.

SERVPRO has Multiple Extractor Options for Water Damaged Edgewater Homes

4/17/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment in the kitchen of a home Kitchen water damage is a common occurrence that we typically see. Call SERVPRO 24/7 to assess the situation and provide effective drying solutions.

Why We Have Extractor Choices for Edgewater Homes

You might think that all extraction tools are the same, but there are varying degrees of power and precision to cater to specific water loss scenarios that threaten Edgewater homes. The advantage of having multiple choices for extraction is that we can provide a tailored water removal experience for each residence after a water loss and have the most efficient path to getting drying efforts started.

We have multiple options for water removal in Edgewater homes, most of which exceed the power and capacities of store-brand vacuums or portable pumps. While homeowners do have the capacity to purchase versions of many of the tools we use from home improvement locations, they often lack the same strength that our equipment does. We have a vast inventory of extraction tools ranging from light wands to extractor vehicles in our fleet, helping us to protect water-damaged properties better.

In most recovery scenarios, our SERVPRO team implements more than one extraction device on the same restoration project. For example, our electric submersible pumps and the stronger gas-powered trash pump function best when water levels are higher than 2 inches. Once the water has gotten reduced to this depth, we can switch to more focused tools like our light wands attached to wet vacs to finish the excess water removal. We can develop the right approach for the damage scenario based on the severity of the standing water and how widespread these effects have become.

We also have specialty extractor options that can help to address the oversaturation of areas like carpeting. With self-propelled weighted extractors and ride-ons, we can force moisture out from the padding and subflooring of carpeted areas to dry out these materials. When approached quickly enough, we can reduce the need for the reinstallation of new carpeting.

Water removal scenarios vary from house to house, but our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team has the equipment and skill to address them individually. We can customize a restoration plan suited to your home and get your property back to preloss condition quickly. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (201) 496-6024.

Affected Items Impact Fire Damage Restoration in Fort Lee Premises

SERVPRO Streamlines Fire Damage Mitigation in Fort Lee Countering Any Challenges

Fire has a far-reaching impact on any property, especially in Fort Lee commercial establishments. Forced closure, even for a limited period, is a common outcome, whether the incident is a major or minor one leading to loss of revenue. Fire damage restoration should help fix deteriorated items and resume normal operations.

Fire damage restoration in a Fort Lee establishment involves many procedures to counter the different problems that the fire creates. The items in the affected areas influence the processes you have to complete. When our SERVPRO technicians inspect the loss site, we determine what we can do at the premises and what may require the assistance of a specialist.

Procedures vary when handling:

  • Electronic equipment
  • Wooden or metal furniture
  • Upholstery and draperies

Computers, printers, and other electronics are typical items in any business facility. A fire can affect them directly by burning some components or indirectly by creating unfavorable conditions.

Electronics are readily damaged when the fire burns their outer shells since most are made from plastic and composite materials. Even when items are untouched by flames or heat, you cannot rule out damage since the infiltration of smoke residues in the interiors can cause short circuits or corrosion. Our SERVPRO IICRC-certified crews can pre-clean your items and then send them to a specialist for restoration.

Fire stains and blemishes

Fire causes significant deterioration to the physical appearance of materials. Such damage can arise from the intense heat that breaks down the material leaving carbon residue. Alternatively, the chemicals and residue deposited by smoke can stain surfaces.

Common reasons for staining

  • Residues settling on surfaces for long
  • Using the wrong cleaning method
  • Unusual residues such as wet smoke

Staining and other issues that change the visual appeal of materials can be prevented or reversed. Our SERVPRO technicians use different cleaning methods, starting with a dry process such as vacuuming or feather-dusting to ensure loose residues do not penetrate materials when subjected to wet cleaning.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee handles fire damage restoration based on what you have at the premises. Call us at (201) 496-6024 for well-timed assistance. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

How Do I Get Rid of Soot After a Kitchen Fire?

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Kitchen After Fire SERVPRO can mitigate your fire damage kitchen in your Fort Lee home.

SERVPRO Removes Different Types of Soot Residues in Fort Lee Homes

After a fire in Fort Lee, you may notice that some residue comes off very quickly, while another residue is tough to remove. There are different types of smoke created from the burning material and the type of fire causing a variety of residues. The amount of oxygen present and the speed of the fire also contribute to the amount and type of smoke deposits. More than one kind of smoke residue is often present after a fire.

What is Smoke?

Smoke is a by-product of the material burning and is present in your fire damaged Fort Lee home. Smoke is gas and microscopic particles. The type of gases and aerosols present in smoke varies depending on the material burning. Oxides of nitrogen come from organic matter, while sulfur dioxide comes from inorganic matter. Gases such as carbon monoxide are hazardous during a fire but dissipate when the fire stops, leaving no residue from this oxygen stealing compound.

What is Soot?

  • Soot is also known as smoke residue, which is the substance that settles on surfaces when the fire stops.
  • There are different types of smoke residue; wet, dry, protein, and fuel.
  • Wet smoke residue tends to be difficult to clean, leaving stains and penetrating porous surfaces.

How Do I Clean Smoke Residue?

  • Technicians can often remove dry smoke by vacuuming.
  • Wet smoke requires aggressive cleaning methods and products.
  • Protein fires, usually in the kitchen, typically require a lot of odor removal. Protein fires do not normally cause much visible staining.
  • Fuel oil smoke residue often comes from furnaces exhausting old smoke and is typical.

Upholstery Cleaning to Restore Commercial Water Damage in Fort Lee

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

close up of carpet in office; cubicles seen Office water damage can impact everything from the structure to the carpeting and furniture.

One day you could enter your office in the morning and notice that you have quite a mess. When office buildings contain multiple floors, a pipe can break on one level and then flood the entire level underneath it. Should water enter the ceiling, it can affect many of your building materials and contents. For example, if a water supply line breaks above your office's waiting room, the furniture inside it could become negatively affected.

When restoring commercial water damage in Fort Lee, cleaning your carpets and furniture can become a significant portion of the overall project. The moisture coming from above becomes soiled with particles it catches on the way down into your office. For example, your office furniture could get stained white from drywall dust inside the water. Once your upholstered furniture gets wet, it can also attract more dirt and dust particles from the air.

Whenever a disaster strikes inside your office building, our SERVPRO technicians know that prompt service is the key to preventing a loss of production. We are available 24 hours a day and seven days a week to provide the following to help your business in stressful times:

  • Water Extraction Services
  • Water Clean-Up
  • Water Damage Debris Removal
  • Conduct Water Damage Repairs
  • Black Mold Inspections
  • Cleaning Up After Sewage Backups
  • Applied Structural Drying (ASD)

Showcase upholstery cleaning can be effective when dealing with heavily soiled wet fabrics that are cleanable. We start by vacuuming your furniture to remove any loose particles. Next, we can apply shampoo with a Tampico upholstery brush and scrub it into the fabric. Then we use a rinse solution and extract all the material on your office chairs.

If your furniture ever gets wet and soiled after your office suffers from a significant water leak, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

HVAC System Cleaning During Fire Restoration in Fort Lee

2 HVAC systems outside of home Fire damage negatively affects your HVAC system. SERVPRO knows how to remove all traces of the fire.

SERVPRO Can Conduct Fire Damage Repairs in Fort Lee

Whenever a fire breaks out inside your residence, the heat and smoke will rise and affect your upper walls and ceilings. The smoke can also climb into areas like your attic. Fire damage negatively affects your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Once soot residues get inside your HVAC system, foul odors can pass throughout your home.

When working on fire restoration in Fort Lee, our SERVPRO technicians can inspect your HVAC system to determine the extent of the smoke damage. We first determine what types of smoke residues are present. Then, we find out if smoke odors are present and how severe the residues are.

We can start the cleaning process by removing and cleaning your vent registers and air intakes to clean your HVAC system. We can then vacuum all the dust and soot out of the inlet plenum and every outlet. Next, we can wash all of the accessible interior surfaces of your HVAC system using a general-purpose detergent.

If smoke odors exist, we can use an ultra-low volume (ULV) fogger with a deodorizer and duct sealer to mimic the smoke's behavior. We can set the fogger up on an intake in your house and then turn on the blower to pump deodorizers throughout your HVAC system. After running the ULV fogger through your ventilation system, we can place odor counteractant beads inside all the fixtures before putting them all back together.

However, other issues such as water damage can occur during any structural blaze extinguishment. Our highly trained SERVPRO team can also assist you with the following 24/7:

  • Water and Fire Damage Restorations
  • Smoke Remediation
  • Structural Deodorization
  • Fire Debris Removal

Cloud to ground lightning against night sky; trees in background Floodwater contains contaminants, but SERVPRO has the tools and training to make it "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Can Help you with Flood Restoration in Edgewater

If water enters your house from the ground up after a storm, the problems can be much worse than you realize. When it floods outside your home, the soil underneath your house can get saturated, causing water to move upward. Muddy water is most likely contaminated with harmful microbes, which we treat as a sewage backup. Sewage water or dirty moisture coming from the ground are classified as schedule three water damage scenarios requiring specialized restoration methods.

Our SERVPRO technicians follow procedures set out by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) program to restore flood damage in Edgewater. When dealing with contaminants in black water, we put safety first by equipping our crew with the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). We then eliminate any potential safety hazards from the work area.

As soon as we enter the affected regions of your home, we can begin spraying an EPA-registered disinfectant on everything that contacted the black water. Next, we set up a containment chamber around the affected part of your structure so that contaminants do not spread to previously untouched areas.

If your floor gets wet by the contaminated water, your carpets and pads must be removed and replaced. If your structural components got affected, we could pressure wash them and disinfect the surfaces. Next, we can clean and dry any interior wall surfaces that got contaminated.

However, many other problems can exist when muddy water comes into your house from the ground. When a disaster occurs, it is prudent to call in our SERVPRO) team because we can help you with the following services:

  • Water Extraction
  • Black Mold Inspections
  • Applied Structural Drying (ASD)
  • Structural Deodorization

SERVPRO Helps Fort Lee Homeowners Explore All Flood Management Options

Flooding varies, ranging from major incidents that necessitate intervention by the government to localized cases where a few properties are affected. Contacting the local FEMA branch in your area or speaking to a representative visiting your neighborhood can help you get some assistance which can go a long way in helping you cope with flood damage.

Fixing flooding takes a variety of actions. So you have to consider other options in managing the flood damage at your Fort Lee property. Contacting professionals like SERVPRO is essential since it expands your horizons on your actions to restore normalcy in your home.

With the assistance of a flood restorer, it is easier to:

  • Safeguard the property
  • Move contents
  • Store items temporarily on site
  • Expedite restoration

A property affected by flooding needs safeguarding since it is left in a vulnerable state. The actions you take can help protect contents or interior structural areas. Most insurers mandate homeowners to protect their homes in case of any disaster, so taking action can help process your claim faster.

Safeguarding a damaged property takes actions like:

  • Covering vulnerable contents with protective materials
  • Moving contents to secure areas
  • Boarding up or tarping the structure

There are many options for moving contents exposed to flooding, including storing them within an affected property section. Upstairs rooms are best in most cases since the lower rooms are usually inundated. If it is not possible to keep items within your property, another great option is to use portable storage like the ones SERVPRO brings when restoring properties. Moving out to an external warehouse helps when no other option is available.

The speed of restoring a damaged property depends on the resources available. A faster turnaround is better for cost and convenience reasons. SERVPRO provides the technical expertise and equipment needed to facilitate such quicker outcomes.

What Mold Remediation Timelines Should Cliffside Park Homeowners Expect?

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

gowns on manikins, mold on wall SERVPRO remediates mold damage to Cliffside Park homes and their contents

SERVPRO Evaluates Cliffside Park Properties and Provide Sufficient Restoration Resources

Since mold appears almost instantaneously, you may want to know whether remediation can be completed with the same speed. Although there is no standard mold remediation timeline, most incidents need at least a week to address all issues. After all, severe contamination also takes weeks or even months to develop. It is just that it is more likely to start in hidden areas, and by the time you notice signs, the damage is done.

Specific factors influence the time it takes to complete mold remediation in Cliffside Park homes. Inspecting the property helps reveal these factors. SERVPRO's Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians are IICRC certified, so you do not need a separate evaluation specialist.

Typical factors that influence mold remediation timelines include:

  • Amount of mold involved
  • Size of the property
  • Resources available

The term amount of mold can mean different things, including the level to which it is embedded on materials or the total surface area covered. Given sufficient time the root-like mold hyphae embed themselves on structural materials causing significant deterioration. Remediation takes longer under such circumstances because of the extra effort needed to clean and remove structural materials. Our SERVPRO technicians use abrasive methods such as sanding on semi-porous surfaces. We also remove porous materials like drywall and insulation.

Resolving mold issues on larger properties takes longer because of bigger surface areas to clean, more materials to remove, or more cavity areas to fix. The challenge can be worse if resources are limited. SERVPRO is well prepared to tackle any level of mold contamination.

Resources necessary for mold remediation include:

  • PPE such as rubber gloves and respirators
  • Building tools like cutting and drilling equipment
  • Fungicides and antimicrobial agents
  • Dry cleaning resources like vacuum cleaners
  • Moisture detection and management equipment

When SERVPRO of Fort Lee handles mold remediation at your property, you do not have to worry about the timelines or outcomes. Call us at (201) 496-6024. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Addressing fire damage at your Fort Lee home requires a mix of quick action, the right knowledge, and an assortment of equipment. Rather than struggling to learn and implement mitigation procedures simultaneously, you can get comprehensive help from SERVPRO in salvaging valuables and restoring your home.

Advisable actions after a fire incident include:

  • Securing the property
  • Informing all relevant people
  • Cleaning all residues
  • Repair structural damage

Securing your property can mean different things. The most common way to secure it is by boarding up windows and doors or installing roof tarps if there is a cave-in. Another aspect of securing the property can involve valuable documents affected by fire or the water used to quell it. Our SERVPRO technicians help by using advanced procedures such as freeze-drying to save wet documents.

After a fire incident, different parties must be involved, including the insurance company and local authorities, for issuance of permits or fire investigation. If you live on rented premises, you must also inform the owners. SERVPRO crew chiefs ensure that you contact all relevant people.

For many people, doing cleanup and structural repairs is what signifies restoration. However, if not properly planned, these actions can create more problems or damage the property. Our SERVPRO crews ensure any cleanup and structural repairs are done safely and effectively. Typical ways to ensure this include choosing the right tools and chemical agents and using PPE while venturing into the damaged areas.

How Can I Prevent Water Damage Caused by Pipes Freezing in Fort Lee?

12/10/2021 (Permalink)

ice on outside water bib Protect your home in Fort Lee against frozen pipes. SERVPRO can help with advice, and if needed, water damage restoration

SERVPRO Can Help with Water Removal in Fort Lee

As many people know, water pipes inside your house are at risk of freezing when temperatures drop during the wintertime. If the H2O inside the lines freezes, it could expand, making a crack form in your pipes. Even a small quarter-inch break can cause hundreds of gallons of water to pour into your house in a short time.

Our SERVPRO technicians find that frozen pipes and ice damming in Fort Lee often occur when people leave town during the winter. While you are away for perhaps a holiday trip, it is a good idea to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing. First, a good action during the winter, if you are leaving town or not, is to remove any fixtures hooked up to outdoor water valves, including hoses and sprinkler systems. When it gets cold outside, water could freeze inside your hoses, and the ice could spread into your water lines and cause a break. The EPA recommends winterizing your house from harsh elements.

If you know it will be cold while you are away or if your power goes out, it is a good idea to keep your faucets running. Leaving the hot valve slightly open and the cold valve opened up a little more can prevent freezing by keeping the water moving. If you are leaving town for an extended period during the winter, it is wise to drain all of your water lines. To do this, shut off your main water valves and open up all of your faucets until the water stops. Always maintain at least 55 degrees in the house.

If your pipes freeze and break anyways, do not worry SERVPRO can help you. Once moisture enters your house, we can provide the following to return your home to its preloss state:

  • Sewage Backup Clean Up
  • Repairing Damage from Burst Pipes
  • Water Removal and Clean Up
  • Basement Flooding Remediation

If you come home from a trip and see water inside your house, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

What Are the Initial Concerns of Powerful Flash Flood Damage to Fort Lee Homes?

11/27/2021 (Permalink)

green servpro military looking truck We're Faster To Any Size Disaster--SERVPRO restores flood-damaged properties in the Greater Fort Lee area. We have the equipment and manpower.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee works fast to overcome initial threats of flash flood damage

Flash flooding gets its name from its rapid development and unpredictability. Homes are vulnerable to these harmful conditions after torrential rainfall and ideal environmental conditions. With the force that this flooding reaches properties, it can substantially damage a home or business in several ways.

Physical Damage to the Building Envelope

The way that flood damage in Fort Lee first shows its signs is through physical destruction. The pressure of this migrating water against the building envelope can quickly find and exploit weakened areas of your home’s foundation and exterior. Board-up and tarping services become vital when these vulnerabilities exist to prevent further damage and exposure to the house.

Solids and Debris in the Intruding Water

Debris and solids carried in with the flooding can also be a concern for homeowners. Mud, silt, and even live creatures pose a critical threat to the property. While extraction can often reveal some of these concerns, added cleaning and recovery measures are necessary to return the property to pre-flood conditions when they are present in the house.

Safety Concerns with Standing Water

There is no mistaking the severity of standing water. Pooling of any kind is threatening to exposed building materials and contents. Prolonged exposure is an even greater concern, as this can deteriorate and ruin building materials, flooring, contents, and more.

Potential Contaminants in the Flood

Contamination is another concern with natural flooding. Flash floods consume what is in their path and can leave your property exposed to many concerning substances like:

  • Sewage
  • Chemicals
  • Organic Matter
  • Biohazard Threats

Flash flooding overwhelms properties quickly, and it can be difficult to know what all your home needs without the involvement of experienced and respected professionals like our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team. We are ready to help whenever disasters strike to make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at (201) 496-6024.

How Can Soot Get Cleaned After a Fire in Fort Lee Homes?

11/18/2021 (Permalink)

sponge cleaning of sooty ceiling SERVPRO's skilled technicians utilize tools and detergents to clean soot from Fort Lee Properties--without demolition

Post-fire cleaning involves many steps and products for Fort Lee residences.

Soot and smoke residues are among the more formidable obstacles our SERVPRO team must face during fire restoration and recovery. As challenging as spreading fire loss effects can be, we have direct methods of overcoming these aerosolized threats.

Clearing the Loose Debris

Before concentrated cleaning can begin in the house during fire damage restoration of Fort Lee properties, our technicians make a direct effort to remove loose debris and buildup on surfaces and contents affected. Wet and dry vacuums are the typical approach for this, though bristled brushing and other mechanical actions can help dislodge and loosen thick deposits.

Dry Cleaning Solutions

Once the loose debris is managed and mostly removed, it is then determined the type of soiling that is present on the surface. Oily residues and thick substances cannot usually be remedied with dry cleaning solutions, but chalky deposits and thin soils can. With approaches like chemical sponges, we can clean much of the residue.

Wet Cleaning of Soiled Surfaces

While there are effective methods of loosening debris and residues before wet cleaning starts, this process requires several of our most powerful cleaners and detergents. Much of the cleaning and restoration products for this phase of soot removal can be broken into a few categories, such as:

  • Dissolving – Solvents are used to chemically react with present oil-based residues and reduce their presence and ultimately eliminate them when possible.
  • Emulsification – This chemical process uses natural versions of oils and waters to trap soils on the surface to rinse/wipe away.
  • Odor-Sealing – Certain products in our inventory are vital in protecting the material when all of the soot damage cannot be removed and the surface is getting repainted or refinished. Odor-sealing products prevent the resurgence of harsh smoke odors.

Cleaning up after fire damages can involve multiple processes. We understand the urgency in this cleaning and restoration, so our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team responds fast with mitigative solutions. Give our team a call today at (201) 496-6024.

Getting water mitigation and emergency services started fast is vital for Fort Lee properties--Call SERVPRO

We are available 24/7 for water and fire damage events. Because We're Faster To Any Size Disaster, we have a clear plan in place to evaluate loss incidents and the impact of disasters on residences.

Thorough Inspection and Customer Consultation

Before water restoration companies in Fort Lee, like our SERVPRO team, can begin with water restoration work, we must evaluate and determine the best initial approaches to protect the structure and its contents better. Part of this process is conducted by walking through the structure and cataloging damage, while another factor involves prioritizing the customer's needs with urgency.

Emergency Services that Benefit Homes

There are specific emergency services that can benefit damaged homes right away. Beginning specific mitigation actions as soon as possible protects the structure from greater harm and lowers the length of time restoration ultimately takes. Some of the mitigative steps that we provide include:

  • Water Removal Services – Pooling water can heavily damage the structure, so we arrive with several extraction devices to remove standing water throughout the house.
  • Demolition – Structural integrity can be heavily compromised after prolonged water exposure. We have a general contractor license to help with controlled demolition needs.
  • Board Up – Preventing the situation from worsening often means sealing over the penetration points or structural damage with board-up and tarping services.
  • Temporary Power – Many water damage emergencies leave structures without sufficient power. We have trailered generators to supply enough electricity to run restoration equipment, heat, and temporary lighting.
  • Content Management – Moving content out of harm's way saves money and time. When damage exists, we can clean it on-site or off-site.

Our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team provides complete and comprehensive restoration and recovery solutions after severe water damage and flooding. We are leading experts in water damage restoration and repairs, and we are available 24/7 when you call (201) 496-6024.

What Type of Fire Damage Cleanup Does Fort Lee SERVPRO Handle?

wall with painting; heavy smoke going up wall Smoke and soot stains are difficult to remove. SERVPRO is your one-stop-shop for your fire damage restoration needs.

SERVPRO Technicians Have Training for All Sizes of Housefire Cleanup

Even a small fire can drastically alter the appearance of a Fort Lee property. Not only physically, but also with changes to the air quality from soot particles that can be a skin or lung irritant in some individuals. The cleanup needs to address all of those factors.

Safety is priority one for SERVPRO techs handling fire damage cleanup in Fort Lee properties. The technicians don personal protective equipment and work quickly to remove building materials with unrepairable damage from the fire. This action often assists in dissipating smoke odors in the home. Other typical tasks include:

  • Inspection of home contents
  • Set up of cleaning stations outside the home
  • Odor control
  • Sanitizing surfaces

Area rugs and carpeting have the potential to absorb a large amount of soot and still not show much in the way of staining. The SERVPRO crew chief will go over the options with homeowners to remove the soot and smoke damage if the carpet fibers are undamaged by the heat of the house fire. The technicians carefully adhere to the scope of coverage for actions taken during a fire damage restoration job to ensure that they do not do anything without approval or are not covered by the homeowner's policy. This attention to detail eliminates surprise out-of-pocket charges.

The technicians handle all aspects of a house fire cleanup, and one of the most important is air quality. They use specialized equipment such as air scrubbers to capture airborne soot particles. Their odor control methods take the remaining soot and neutralize them at the molecular level to render their odor-causing abilities inert.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 supports the local Fort Lee community with their professional fire damage restoration services. The trained and certified technicians are available 24/7 to make the smoke damage and charring, "Like it never even happened."

What Should Edgewater Business Owners Do First After Flood Damage?

10/18/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Assists Edgewater Property Owners with Floodwater Removal

Fast action is an essential part of addressing floodwater removal and cleanup in local Edgewater commercial properties. The longer the water lingers, the more damage it does. There are some actions business owners can take to protect their property and contents from additional damage.

SERVPRO recommends Edgewater property owners with flood damage take the following actions:

  • Contact your insurance carrier to report the incident
  • Turn off electricity if it is safe to do so to protect against shock from water coming into contact with outlets
  • Remove on the floor if it is safe to do so
  • Contact SERVPRO technicians to start the extraction and drying services immediately

The technicians have generators to power their equipment, so there is never a delay in starting the floodwater removal process. The techs will quickly scope the affected area and remove any items that have the potential for reuse or drying in another place. In many cases, the floodwater recedes almost as fast as it entered, the problem being the moisture did not recede outside; it entered walls, under flooring, and behind baseboards.

The techs use their array of moisture detection equipment to determine the migration path of the floodwater. They know that businesses need to reopen quickly, and after the initial inspection, the crew chief can set a timeline for the extraction, drying, and disinfection of the property. This timeline estimate allows business owners to set up alternative ways to handle day-to-day operations by utilizing work-at-home procedures for employees to keep the business running until the property is repaired and safe to work in again.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 brings professional equipment and years of experience to clean up any size of flood damage in Edgewater properties.

What are Early Signs of Water Damage in a Fort Lee Kitchen

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

standing water on white kitchen floor Kitchens are frequent locations for water loss events. Should water invade your kitchen, call SERVPRO!

SERVPRO Techs Can Clean Up the Water and Leave the Fort Lee Kitchen "Like it never even happened."

Many appliances are connected to supply lines, such as the dishwasher and fridge in a Fort Lee kitchen. Along with the sink, any of these can be the central issue in a water cleanup job.

SERVPRO technicians recommend that Fort Lee residents look for water damage in their homes regularly. A small drip is far easier and less costly to repair than an entire wall softened by months of water exposure, and there is a strong possibility that mold remediation may be part of that equation.

Common Interior Leaks

Not all water damage incidents are sudden pipe breaks or sewage backups. Sometimes a supply line to a washing machine, dishwater, or faucet develops a slow leak, leading to more significant problems if it continues. Pipes run up walls and throughout ceilings; homeowners should be on the lookout for wet areas or discoloration that can indicate the presence of excessive moisture.

Structural Water Damage

The exterior homes take a beating from the elements, and the ability to keep water out of the house can get compromised over time. Soffits and the flashing around chimneys can wear down and allow rain and snowmelt into the home. Frequently this problem will affect the attic for a period before the water collects enough to announce its presence in a ceiling in the level below. That is why SERVPRO recommends homeowners inspect basements and attics regularly to ensure water is not entering the property. Other signs to look for are:

  • Wet or darkened walls or ceilings
  • Water on floors beside appliances
  • Warping of floors
  • Loosening of glue-down tiles

Fort Lee residents put their trust in SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024. The trained, experienced technicians are available 24/7 for any size or type of water damage restoration services.

Clearing Out Lingering Smoke Odors in Fire-Damaged Fort Lee Offices

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

We Have Several Deodorization Approaches to Get Your Fort Lee Office Back in Business

While there are many steps to fire damage restoration after a disaster in an office building, one of the final measures preventing the return of the staff is smoke odors. We have many solutions to overcome these threats and improve indoor air quality.

Reducing the Severity of Smoke Odors

One of the first ways to combat fire damage to Fort Lee offices, like harsh odors, is to reduce the severity of these threats. It is possible to approach the reduction in odor severity from several angles, beginning with any fire debris removal in the mitigation stages. All surface cleaning for soot and smoke removal can also reduce odor severity. Finally, thermal and ULV fogging approaches provide a portable solution to lessening the intensity of post-fire smells.

Sealing in Odors Trapped in Porous Wall Materials

As you might suspect with fire damage restoration, some degree of reconstruction and repairs will be necessary. Repainting and refinishing floors and ceilings can provide a suitable opportunity to overcome odors trapped inside. Odor-sealing primers applied before top coats prevent smells from resurfacing.

Full Large-Loss Deodorization and Odor Elimination

Larger commercial structures require special tools and approaches for fire and water restoration. We have trailered portable power and larger desiccant units for whole-office restoration and recovery. We also provide industrial-grade deodorization products and equipment to manage burning smells in large, open spaces. Some of the equipment used includes:

  • HEPA Air Scrubbing
  • Hydroxyl Generators
  • Ozone Machines

Odors can be a formidable obstacle to restore full functionality in your office building after a fire. The experienced fire restoration professionals of our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team can help with odor removal and management solutions. Give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

Several Strategies Exist for Protecting Personal Belongings After Water Damage in Edgewater Properties

Water damages can result from several threatening situations, making the response of restoration professionals like our team vital to protect the exposed contents within the residence. We have several solutions for this need, which get determined by findings from the job scoping phase.

Relocating Contents to a Safe Space

One of the main stages of water mitigation for Edgewater homes after water damage is protecting exposed contents from more significant harm. Relocating content to new areas of the house unaffected by water damage can be a fast and low-cost solution to protecting what matters most to customers. The process itself follows simple steps:

  • Damage inspections
  • Finding a suitable dry space
  • Moving belongings quickly to secure location
  • Resuming water mitigation and cleanup

On-Site Surface Cleaning and Drying

Our team needs to provide cleaning and restoration services for damaged belongings within the house. It can be stressful for homeowners to relinquish their belongings for off-site cleaning, so strategies exist to prevent this outcome whenever possible. We have many service cleaning products and approaches to clear residues and dirt from damaged personal belongings or furniture.

Pack-Out and Move-Back Processes

One of the final ways to protect damaged contents in your home after water damage is to remove them to our nearby SERVPRO facility. Experienced cleaning technicians on our roster can individually treat items and furniture to surface cleaning and drying. When restoration completes in the house, the move back process places these restored items to their original locations.

Water mitigation is among the most critical actions our professionals take when damage occurs to local residences or businesses. From water removal services to content relocation, these actions determine the pace and cost of later restoration services. Our experienced SERVPRO of Fort Lee team is available 24/7 at (201) 496-6024.

Eliminating Standing Water from Basement Floors

Because flood damage in Edgewater homes can overwhelm areas like the basement, our team needs to respond quickly with mitigation solutions. Among the chief actions that our professionals can take is the removal of standing water. We have suitable extraction solutions like pumps and vacuums to manage pooling in this lower level, even with natural flooding that includes debris and solids.

Clearing Trapped Water from Wood Installations

Trapped water can also be a considerable concern for our professionals. Moisture can find its way into porous materials and deteriorate these elements after prolonged exposure. We have multiple drying solutions for damaged, damp wood. Surface and trapped moisture removal use tools like:

  • Centrifugal air movers
  • Drying mats
  • Positive pressure systems
  • Negative pressure systems
  • Moisture monitoring equipment

Repairing the Structural Vulnerabilities Left Behind

Among the many helpful services we offer is our ability to repair and reconstruct damaged properties after flood damage. Penetrating groundwater can destroy mortar joints in foundation walls or compromise the structural integrity of building elements. Experienced professionals with our general contractor license can complete necessary repairs to prevent recurrences of flooding.

Flooding can be a rapidly developing and devastating situation for area homes. With the fast response of our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team, we can help manage hazardous conditions and restore the property. Contact us today at (201) 496-6024.

SERVPRO Saves Fort Lee Entrepreneurs Time and Money in Water Restoration

Water damage is always a matter of concern for anyone who owns or operates a restaurant. If water restoration of your Fort Lee establishment is not done on time, it can lead to serious secondary problems, including mold damage.

SERVPRO's IICRC certified team of technicians uses a strategy of water restoration at your Fort Lee establishment that ensures minimum downtime. We use advanced equipment to remove any standing water as well as residual moisture from the affected area. Increased airflow is an important tool that SERVPRO techs use to speed up the drying process. In most drying situations, the faster air flows across the surface, the faster moisture evaporates from it.

How do SERVPRO Techs Use Air Movers to Speed Up Drying Process During Water Damage Repairs in Fort Lee Establishments?

As water evaporates from a surface, the layer of air immediately next to the wet surface becomes cooler and gets saturated with moisture. The layer of this saturated, cold air acts as a barrier to further evaporation and is called the boundary layer. SERVPRO techs use professional-grade air movers placed strategically throughout the structure to remove this boundary layer from the water-damaged areas of your Fort Lee property.

SERVPRO water damage restoration technicians often use dehumidifiers in combination with air movers. The dehumidifiers produce warm, dry air, and air movers circulate this air throughout the structure. The combination results in lowering the humidity ratio of the air, helping the surfaces dry much quicker.

Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024; our technicians are available 24/7 to answer any water damage-related questions you might have.

Fast Service, Trained Staff, and Advanced Technology Makes SERVPRO the Stand Out Among Other Mold Remediation Companies in Fort Lee

Mold inspections, remediations, and removal are complicated processes that require the use of specific equipment. Only professionals like SERVPRO have the training, tools, and expertise to provide fast and reliable mold remediation at your Fort Lee home.

The priority of SERVPRO technicians during mold remediation from your Fort Lee home is to prevent the spread of mold to the unaffected areas. As mold spores are microscopic and airborne, they can be easily carried by air currents to different parts of your home once the remediation process begins. To prevent this from happening, SERVPRO mold specialists use containment and sophisticated air filtering equipment.

How do SERVPRO Mold Specialists Use Negative Air Machine for Mold Removal in Fort Lee Homes?

SERVPRO technicians use a negative air machine equipped with HEPA filters to prevent mold spores from leaving the contaminated area of your Fort Lee home. The device operates by using a ducting system to remove air from the contaminated area, passing it through a series of filters before exhausting it out. As the air is removed from the confined contaminated space, it creates a negative air pressure (also called vacuum effect) inside the controlled area.

The negative air machines that SERVPRO uses are equipped with a HEPA filter that can remove 99.7% of airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter or larger, including mold spores (between 4 to 20 microns in size).

Quick Action is Essential Whenever There is Water Damage

  • If the above happens, the linoleum needs to be removed and replaced.
  •   If the dishwasher is on an upper level, ceiling repair may be necessary.

How Professional Water Removal Benefits Residences in Fort Lee

The first time a homeowner scrambles to respond to water damage in Fort Lee is a learning experience. Your immediate response might be to try to manage the influx of water from a plumbing break or appliance malfunction without expert help. Merely mopping up while increasing airflow by opening windows or setting up fans often falls short as a comprehensive removal solution. We have the training and the equipment to complete the job comprehensively.

Training Is the Foundation of Our Success

Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) trained managers and technicians use restoration industry best practices to conduct water removal in your Fort Lee home. We follow the research-based inspection and evaluation protocols to map out the dimensions of the water damage as precisely as possible.

Familiarity with Water Movement Is Key

Water can migrate from the original damaged site, seeping through cracks and joints between building materials. Fixtures like carpeting and padding can wick up moisture, carrying it far from the leak or overflow. Cavities and recesses between walls, beneath floors, and above ceilings can hide significant quantities of water. SERVPRO technicians are proficient in locating trapped moisture and in outlining the perimeter of the affected area. We use thermal imaging and a range of moisture detection devices to ensure no water goes undetected without removal.

Water Evacuation Must Be Fast and Thorough

Any pooled water deeper than two inches evacuates most effectively using submersible pumps. Diligent follow-up with appropriate extractors, wanded on carpets and squeegees on bare floors, is crucial. The SERVPRO team knows extracting is much more efficient than dehumidification in water removal scenarios. When we suspect water lurks in spaces between walls, we employ controlled demolition techniques to gain access for extraction and better airflow during the drying phase.

We Monitor Drying Progress Carefully

Water removal is not complete until saturated structural component moisture levels return to normal. We collect data from materials in unaffected areas of your home and use those numbers as goals while drying. SERVPRO crews employ air movers and heat to create conditions where water absorbed after the emergency evaporates into the air, captured by dehumidifiers for collection and removal. Periodic metering of moisture levels demonstrates our success as numbers recorded reduce to the goals established.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee offers highly qualified crews and state-of-the-art equipment for your water removal needs. Call us at (201) 496-6024 for service that makes water damage “Like it never even happened.”

Significant Fire Damage in Fort Lee? Call SERVPRO To Aid in Remediation Assistance

How Professionals Help Homeowners Remove Fort Lee Fire Damage Residues

A household fire in Fort Lee is challenging for many reasons. Understandable fear for the safety of your loved ones causes immediate evacuation. When you view your home again, the damage appears devastating, and you have no idea what to do next. Our team of fire mitigation and remediation specialists have the training and experience necessary to assess the scene, devise a plan, and use industry best practices to return your dwelling to pre-fire condition.

Introduction to Soot Deposits

Fire damage to your Fort Lee home includes surface soiling from the materials combusted. As building materials and the contents of your home burn, they produce toxic gases, acids, chemicals, metals, dirt, and dust. Heated air currents and HVAC systems spread soot throughout all spaces in your house, where it attaches to surfaces and impairs air quality. The soot is acidic and corrodes building materials and contents. Depending on the materials burned, soot can have different consistencies and adhesive properties.

Safe Toxic Residue Removal

Our SERVPRO team masters Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training in effective and efficient soot removal. Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) evaluate the attributes of the residues and select the appropriate products, tools, and methods to remove them.

  • Light, ashy deposits from hot-burning paper and wood vacuum up and dry sponge away easily.
  • Sticky, thick deposits from electrical shorts and smoldering fabrics need the application of cleaners with surfactants and wetting agents followed by agitation and removal of debris with sponges or cloths.
  • Thin, highly malodorous protein-based deposits from food and grease often require solvents and abrasive cleaners or tools to loosen before wipedowns.
  • Specialized Fire Damage Recovery Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) shields our technicians during fire damage cleanup. We also consider containing the working spaces. Plastic sheeting defines the fire damage restoration area, which is sealed to prevent smoke and soot with negative pressure air scrubber systems. The air scrubber forces the contaminated air through HEPA filters and exhausts to the outside. This approach protects you and your family from toxic residues, and unaffected areas of your home remain clear of tracked or airborne debris.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee is ready to respond to a fire damage emergency in your home round the clock. Call (201) 496-6024 to schedule an assessment and plan for mitigation and remediation as soon as the firefighting completes.

Water Removal from Edgewater Café Flooring Materials

5/20/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment at work. SERVPRO water damage restoration services are second to none. We are dedicated to having your business back to preloss condition A.S.A.P.

How our expert technicians handle Edgewater café water removal with an extra challenge

Many damage restoration companies write off water-damaged flooring as impossible to salvage and needing replacement, but SERVPRO does not quit so easily. Our advanced water removal methods allow us to restore rather than replace most materials.

Water removal from an Edgewater café typically involves multiple types of flooring, including wood, tile, carpet, and vinyl. SERVPRO technicians know how to handle water removal from all of these and more. Some of the situations most likely to impact your flooring include:

  • Leaking Roof from Storms
  • Burst pipes
  • Broken water fixtures
  • Flood damages
  • Ceiling sprinkler activation

Tile floors can pose an additional challenge because many of the most concerning damages may happen to the subfloor underneath the tiles. Ceramic tiles do not incur much damage, but moisture leaking through cracks and grout can cause long-term problems that are difficult to diagnose. SERVPRO technicians use non-penetrating moisture meters to detect water beneath tiles without removing or damaging them.

If we detect moisture beneath the tiles, we carefully remove them and dry out the subfloor. In many cases, the subfloor may contain warped wood or cracked concrete that requires attention from our specialists. We repair these damages, dry the area and deodorize it if necessary, and then replace the tiles after inspecting for lingering moisture content.

Water Removal Services in Fort Lee – Call SERVPRO

Fort Lee is situated along the Hudson River in New Jersey, across from Manhattan, New York. The George Washington Bridge connects the two cities over the Hudson River. During the American Revolutionary War, Fort Lee was used as an encampment. The current population of the city is approximately 38,000 people. Fort Lee is known as the birthplace of subliminal messaging after a story was reported in 1957 of an experiment conducted by James Vicary. He claimed increased sales of soft drinks and popcorn after flashing messages on a theater screen subliminally. Although it was reported later to be a false claim, the concept remained and flourished in modern marketing.

For a time in the early 1900s, Fort Lee originated the motion picture industry, and the city led the industry in attracting investment and skilled artists. During the 1910-1920 period, there were approximately fifteen studios in the city. They also used the area as a backdrop for many movies. Unfortunately, investment moved to Hollywood and the studios followed in the 1930s.

Since Fort Lee is considered part of New York City's metropolitan area, there are a multitude of things to do in the city and in the surrounding area. A few of these are listed:

  • Fort Lee Historic Park
  • Fort Lee Museum
  • Ross Dock Picnic Area
  • Constitution Park
  • The Fort Lee Museum at the Judge Moore House
  • Hudson Park
  • Hudson Shakespeare Company – Shakespeare in the Park

Fort Lee Historic Park

The park includes a reconstruction of the Revolutionary War encampment along with a visitor center where you can learn more about the park and the part the fort played in the war. Check with the visitor center for programs and events that take place during the year. The trailheads for the Long Path and Shore Trail are located near the visitor center.

The Fort Lee Historic Park is open daily. Pets and bicycles are not permitted.

Visitors will also enjoy the reconstructed blockhouse, gun batteries, and firing steps. Opposite the barbette battery, there are recreations of eighteenth-century officers' and soldiers' huts. There is a well, a baking oven, and a woodshed. Check for opening times and availability of the visitor center during the current health situation.

Constitution Park

Constitution Park has 5.6 acres, and parking is available at Fletcher Ave and Lewis St.

Many residents enjoy the parks features, which includes:

  • A Bocce Court
  • An adult exercise area
  • Children's playground
  • Softball fields
  • Patio seating area

SERVPRO vehicle parked in front of home SERVPRO understands how serious water can damage the carpeting in your home, Call us for assistance with water removal.

SERVPRO can Help Edgewater Residents Determine Whether to Dispose of Salvage Items

Carpet and padding are porous, which makes them especially vulnerable to water damage. They absorb water and contaminants readily. When a home is flooded and carpeting is impacted, it can present unique challenges.

Can Carpets Be Restored from the Effects of Contaminated Flood Water?

Carpets that have been saturated by contaminated water cannot be restored. Replacement is the only solution in this case. Part of our flood damage service in Edgewater is the proper removal and replacement of carpets. If your home has extensive carpeting, you want someone who knows how to mitigate the damage and restore your home to preloss condition. When dealing with carpet replacement we:

  • Move the furniture, and when finished, put it back where it was
  • Clean and decontaminate the flooring underneath
  • Put down the new carpet

At SERVPRO, our goal is always to restore rather than replace, but in some situations, that is not safe to do. Carpet and padding contaminated with black water are one of those circumstances.

Should Fort Lee Homeowners Clean Fire Damage Themselves?

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

fire and smoke damaged home Fire and smoke damage done to your home is no DIY project. SERVPRO has the man power and equipment for any size job.

SERVPRO Brings Advances Equipment and Techniques for Fire Restoration in Fort Lee Properties

There is more damage caused by a fire than burned fixtures, furnishings, and structural assemblies. The smoke and soot degrade the indoor air quality and can settle on surfaces and cause secondary fire damage.

When a homeowner reports a Fort Lee fire in their home, the damage may all look the same, but there are four different soot types, and each one needs a specific handling method.

The types of soot SERVPRO technicians deal with regularly are:

  • Dry smoke
  • Wet smoke
  • Protein smoke
  • Fuel oil smoke

As a fire burns through a structure, both dry and wet smoke can get left upon surfaces as the heat of the fire and articles burned change. Slower burning, smoldering fires, and burned plastics tend to leave behind wet residues that smear easily and stick to surfaces. Building materials and wood tend to burn at higher temperatures and leave dry, powdery dry smoke that spreads with ease and should get removed without the use of liquid cleaners. While dry smoke is less staining and leaves a less pungent odor behind, the presence of wet smoke residues may require multiple odor control applications to rid the structure of any residual odors.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 brings professional service and experience to all types of fire restoration in Fort Lee homes.

SERVPRO Has the Equipment to Remove Floodwater

Floodwater in a home can happen in an instant. Once the water is inside the house, it races and can seep under floors, and behind walls as fast it can recede.

SERVPRO techs use a host of specific devices to scope Fort Lee homes with flood damage. This attention to detail enables the techs to locate all areas of collected moisture. The extraction process may involve many different types of removal equipment such as portable pumps, mops, and even squeegee. The techs pick up the maximum amount of water to make the drying phase of the cleanup go even faster.

Drying a property post-flood can bring unique challenges for the technicians. For example, carpet needs different handling than hardwood flooring. The techs use direct drying equipment such as:

  • Injecti-Dry system for driving warm, dry air into small areas
  • Drying mats for hardwood flooring
  • Air movers with created tubing to direct air under a carpet

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 helps save local Fort Lee properties with any size flood damage. Through the use of their advanced applications, the techs make the damage, "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Has Professional Equipment for Edgewater Water Removal Jobs

The area now known as Edgewater was once part of the Lenape tribe, sometimes referred to as Delaware. These Native Americans lived and prospered in the area as farmers, hunters, and gatherers for thousands of years. Once the European settlers began arriving, the Lenape started selling portions of their lands to the settlers; in this way, Vriessendael, the first modern colony in Bergen County, finally became the modern-day Edgewater got founded. Vriessendael got destroyed in 1643, three years after its founding, land disputes with another local tribe that also laid claim to the land.

Edgewater's earliest industry was fishing, where shad were abundant as the fish migrated up the Hudson River from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. One of the first service businesses was set up by Etienne Burdett. He established a ferry service between the north border of Edgewater and Manhattan Island in 1758. The structure known as Burdett's Landing, where the ferry launched from, stood until 1899 and was invaluable for the movement of supplies and soldiers during the American Revolutionary War to get needed support to Fort Lee and Fort Washington.

In the late 19th century, Edgewater underwent a massive change in direction and stopped being a fishing town and changed to being a much-in-demand resort town with several large hotels built to handle the influx of visitors. During this time, Burdett's Landing adopted the new name of "Old Stone Dock."

The 20th century saw Edgewater morph into a genuinely industrial city with the establishment of numerous factories, and New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railway cut the Edgewater Tunnel through the Palisades, which connected the borough to the mainline. The town's proximity to the Hudson River's deepwater piers made it especially suited for shipping goods. As the industry continued to grow and spread, the hotels and reputation as a resort town faded. By 1920, the primary industries were producing:

  • Chemicals
  • Dyes
  • Oils
  • Sugars for food production.

Transitioning into a more residential community has been difficult as the borough still has marks from its time as an industrial force. The land from the old Alco Plant site got sold to a developer who wanted to build condominiums. Still, the ground had contamination from industrial chemicals, including PCBs, and this situation was not an isolated incident.

What Are the Consequences of Waiting for Water Removal in Edgewater Properties?

When an Edgewater home needs water removal, the sooner the process starts, the better. The time span between the damage to the home and the cleanup can increase the number of building materials and articles that cannot get restored. Professional biocides help lower the risk of bacteria build-up in water that aged before SERVPRO technicians were brought in.

SERVPRO technicians usually set up a cleaning station just outside the worksite to handle items that need stain removal or sanitizing. The most common types of cleaning methods include:

  • Immersion cleaning
  • Spot cleaning
  • Agitation

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 relies on the certified, professional technicians for water removal needs in local Edgewater properties.

1/19/2021 (Permalink)

A SERVPRO truck in front of a building. SERVPRO of Fort Lee enjoys their cities history and happiness.

Fort Lee was the Nation’s First “Hollywood.”

Today, Hollywood, California is most often considered to be the filmmaking capital of America, if not the world.  However, this has not always been the case.  In fact, little more than a hundred years ago, the town of Fort Lee, New Jersey was at the heart of the fledgling filmmaking industry.  This seemingly odd circumstance resulted because of at least four practical reasons.  First, Thomas Edison invented the movie camera in nearby West Orange and soon after established the very first movie studio there.  A second reason for Fort lee’s rise as a moviemaking mecca was its proximity to New York City and its large pool of theater actors.  Thirdly, the town was located in the country’s main commercial and population hub at the time.  Lastly, it offered diverse and easy to access landscapes for filming locations.

The Fort Lee Film Industry is Born

Fort Lee’s early status as the nation’s first major film-producing center largely developed because of the efforts of inventor Thomas Edison.  In 1886, Edison invented the kinetoscope, the world’s first motion picture camera.  Eventually, in 1893, the inventor built the first movie production studio, “Black Maria,” on the grounds of his West Orange workshop, a mere thirty miles away from Fort Lee.  After acquiring several patents related to his new invention and forming a movie production syndicate, Edison became the dominant force in the film industry for several years.  The movies of his companies, like the popular 1907 silent film “Rescued from an Eagle’s Nest,” introduced other would-be moviemakers to the area as a prime filming location.

Benefits of Locating in Fort Lee and How it Fueled the New Industry

Located across from Manhattan, where the present-day George Washington Bridge crosses the Hudson River, Fort Lee was an ideal location for movie studios.  This was true for various obvious reasons, like:

  • Fort Lee was near centers of movie making technology, making it more convenient for firms to acquire and maintain equipment
  • The town was located just across the river from the nation’s largest and most famous theater district, giving studios easy access to a large pool of talented actors
  • It was in the heart of America’s largest population and commercial center, which put filmmakers closer to potential funding sources, made film production and distribution much easier, and gave firms access to more venues to showcase their movies
  • The area around the town offered diverse landscapes, including various urban and natural environments, ideal for films depicting varied international settings

All of these benefits were quickly noticed by other aspiring film directors and motion picture production companies that settled there between 1907 and 1918.  Famed directors like D.W. Griffith shot hundreds of movies around Fort Lee and, by 1918, eleven or more production studios had located there.

The Notable Movies and Actors of the Fort Lee Era

At its zenith, the Fort Lee motion picture industry cranked out hundreds of films and hosted the talents of several notable actors and actresses.  Some of the more notable films from the era included:

  • The Call of the Wild (1908), a Western melodrama about the relationship between an Indian brave and a white woman
  • The Battle (1911), a picture set during the American Civil War
  • Robin Hood (1912), a movie about Robin Hood and his merry men
  • The Blue Bird (1918), a fantasy film
  • Within Our Gates (1919), a theatrical response to D.W. Griffith’s controversial picture The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the earliest known film made by an African American

In these early days of motion pictures, it was not uncommon to see famed industry celebrities walking about in this community on the Hudson.  A few of the more recognizable A-list stars that passed through the area while working on movies were:

  • “Fatty” Arbuckle
  • Lionel Barrymore
  • Lillian Gish
  • Mary Pickford
  • Will Rogers
  • Rudolph Valentino

These particular actors and actresses were so influential that they defined the silent film era and essentially all of them are remembered today.

The End of Fort Lee’s Golden Age

Fort Lee’s time as the movie capital of the world effectively ended in 1918.  The frigid winter of that year, combined with coal shortages fostered by the First World War, made it difficult for local film studios to heat their facilities and continue production.  In addition to this hardship was the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 that forced production companies to close for weeks at a time.  Ultimately, all these problems motivated these firms to relocate to the Los Angeles area.

As you can see, unforeseen circumstances can upset the plans of anyone.  This is why the water damage mitigation experts at SERVPRO of Fort Lee would like to remind you that we are always ready to deal with your water-related issues.  Call us anytime at (201) 496-6024 for assistance.

Meeting Water Damage Restoration Needs of Fort Lee

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO new equipment Water damage in Fort Lee will be a hassle in your home. Call SERVPRO with their experienced technicians to use new water mitigation techniques.

In New York City's metropolitan area, restorers have much to protect after water damages.

Fort Lee is a city that has almost consistently grown and evolved since its origins as one of the new settlements to take root and thrive after the American Revolution. From Bergen County being one of the catalysts for the motion picture industry to the classic Palisades Amusement Park that ran for 73 years beginning in 1898, Fort Lee has been home to many of the country's most well-known places and events. When disasters like water damage occur, protecting this history becomes the job of our experienced SERVPRO technicians.

Gateway to New York City

One of the significant attributing factors to the growth and expansion of Fort Lee after the turn of the 20th century was the creation of the George Washington Bridge. This was a substantial undertaking for both states, as it was constructed from the branch of the government agency overseeing the ports of both New York and New Jersey. This double-decked suspension bridge crosses the Hudson River and unites Fort Lee to Manhattan. The bridge was initially dedicated in 1931 and currently supports the traffic of more than 100 million vehicles a year.

The creation and heavy use of this bridge would see a growth in population for Fort Lee and its surrounding areas. Those that wanted the allure of New York City no longer had to stay within its limits to commute easily. In New Jersey, residential neighborhoods are often less crowded and less expensive for more extensive square footage in a home. The bridge continues to be a gateway connecting the still growing Fort Lee community with the Big Apple.

The Population Boom

Though highly developed now, much of this area in New Jersey used to be rural properties. Before a tremendous industrial draw began overtaking some of the developments throughout eastern New Jersey, places like Fort Lee would not see quite its peak population numbers as it does today. Even with the construction of the George Washington Bridge, which connects the city to downtown Manhattan, the population only grew slightly.

The creation and construction of multiple high-rise towers designed exclusively for living space provided the uptick in the population that modern Fort Lee residents recognize. During the 1960s and 70s, a substantial population boom was attributed to the production of these high-rise apartment buildings that could support hundreds of families within a single structure. That development continues today as an allure for those looking for more affordable accommodation without living in the city of New York.

High-Rise Structures

These structures present a need for specialized equipment and approaches when water or fire damage exists several stories in the air. As it stands, there are nine structures in Fort Lee that exceed 300 feet in height, most of which are apartments and condominiums for residents. One such structure is the formidable dual tower design of The Modern complex. This structure stretches 47 floors into the sky, with each tower having an equal half of the more than 900 apartments – many with panoramic views of the New York City skyline or the Hudson River.

While many of the other high-rises might not measure up to the nearly 500 feet of each of The Modern towers, many older constructions served as foundational blocks for the skyscrapers recently built. In 1975, the city finalized the construction of The Plaza and The Colony, twin structures that stand roughly 350 ft and feature 32 stories of apartment units.

Cultural and Historical Centers

With so many historical figures passing through Fort Lee and even encamping within its region, it is no great surprise to learn that the name of the city originates from one of the American Revolution generals, Charles Lee. His service to the Continental Army would be memorable, enough for his service to be commemorated by the town's naming, Despite also being involved in one of the worst retreats of the revolution at the Battle of Monmouth. Our region's role throughout the growth and adaptation of a new nation can be seen at the Fort Lee Museum.

Those wanting to better understand the conditions and the quarters for the Continental Army could also visit areas like the Ft. Lee Soldiers Cabin. This is part of a greater historic park on protected grounds of the city, which can showcase many exhibits of old weaponry, accommodations, and tools of the time period to showcase the hardships of colonial Fort Lee.

SERVPRO Restoration and Water Damage Repairs

There is an urgency to address water disasters when they happen, precisely because of how quickly these effects can spread throughout Fort Lee homes. Mitigation is one of the most critical phases of protecting property and contents, and this begins as soon as our technicians and building trade professionals arrive. As you might expect, extraction is one of the critical elements of mitigation, specifically because of how threatening standing water can be too sensitive materials that absorb moisture and can begin to deteriorate almost immediately.

Water damage repairs for Fort Lee homes often involve compromised portions of plumbing that burst or degrade over time. With freezing being such a common occurrence during harsh winter months along the Hudson, homeowners can remain at risk of pipe bursts. Repairing damaged structural elements and compromised pipes and fixtures fall to the competent building trade professionals on our roster that arrive with our emergency response team.

Reconstruction is a specific need after substantial water loss incidents, making our general contractors' experience and available expertise valuable to restoration projects. While controlled demolition and repairs happen among the mitigation tasks necessary, the property's build-back is a step taken following the bulk of the restoration phase.

As challenging as water damage incidents might be to overcome, involving our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team provides homes with a comprehensive solution, including restoration and repairs. Give our experienced team a call at (201) 496-6024.

The borough of Fort Lee, New Jersey, runs alongside the Hudson River on the East Coast and above the Palisades. During the American Revolutionary War, this borough was a crucial military outpost, which is where the name Fort Lee comes from. But this corner of the United States has remained at the forefront of consciousness through the 20th and 21st centuries. It was the site of America's first film industry with Edison's "Black Maria" film studios alongside nearly twenty other modernist, independent film production companies. Today the 35,000 plus people living in this part of New Jersey are a cosmopolitan, waterfront community that acts as a connecting line between Manhattan and Washington Heights.

Modern-day Fort Lee has a diverse main street that is full of food from across the globe. Residents and visitors can take their pick from Korean, Japanese Sushi, Italian Eateries, and traditional American cuisine. Once you have stocked up on energy, it is well worth making your way out to Constitution or Firemen's park to take in some of the scenery. For the more experienced walkers, the Palisades Interstate Park provides a range of hiking trails and views over Manhattan, the George Washington Bridge, and surrounding Bergen County. Every year the close-knit community gathers together to watch the lighting of the tree at the Community Center. Fort Lee is a small borough with a long history and a big future.

  • Fort Lee residents and locals of the surrounding Bergen County gather together each spring to celebrate Carnival at the Church of the Madonna on Main Street. Typical festivities include fantastic local cuisine, a fundraiser, carnival games, and an optional wristband for unlimited rides on the numerous fairs.
  • The strong Italian history of Fort Lee is celebrated with the annual feast in honor of Saint Rocco. This event has been running for 91 years, making it one of Fort Lee's most treasured traditions. The festival includes a raffle, rides, games, and live music with donations going toward the Saint Rocco Mutual Aid Society. This traditional feast takes place on Mainstreet during August.
  • On Palisade Avenue, the Fort Lee Museum is a hidden gem for visitors looking to learn a little more about this area's history. The museum was founded in 1999 at the Judge Moore House. Exhibitions cover the unique local history such as The Battle of Fort Lee, the history of Motion Pictures in Bergen County, and exhibits on the iconic George Washington Bridge and its construction.

Visiting Monument Park in Fort Lee

Monument Park is one of only two parks in America dedicated to those who fought in the American Revolution. The other park is in nearby Brooklyn at the Continental Army Plaza. The grounds on which Monument Park is based was initially an encampment for armed forces fighting under George Washington. A revolutionary war monument and a time capsule were placed in the park, which has over 33 acres of greenery. The park was put together in 1908 by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It is only the Fort Lee Museum's home that contains exhibits on the defense of the Hudson River against British forces and the 2,600 soldiers stationed in and around Bergen County.

  • During the summer, Monument park has a concert arena that shows regular Shakespearean plays, including Henry V.
  • The cliff-side park features fantastic views over the surrounding cities, including the New York Yankees Stadium in the Bronx.
  • There is a faithful reproduction of the original encampment in Fort Lee, including the battery quarters and blockhouse.

Storm Surges and Adverse Weather Conditions in Fort Lee.

Tropical storms form as the result of high-pressure vectors through the combination of warm and cold air. New Jersey residents must practice storm preparedness throughout the year to ensure they are well-equipped to deal with the stormy season that typically runs from the1st of June to the end of November. Many of these tropical storms begin in the Caribbean before making their way across the Atlantic to the East Coast. Among the chief concerns for residents are storm surges, which can lead to Hudson River overflows and flooding in Fort Lee and surrounding areas like Staten Island. Hurricane warnings are usually issued within twenty-four-hours of impact, which is why New Jersey residents keep storm preparedness kits containing medicine, battery-operated radios, and essential documents in case of an emergency.

SERVPRO is Can Perform Expert Mold Remediation Services for Residents of Fort Lee Throughout the Winter Months.

Mold spores are ever present in indoor environments and, most of the time, remain invisible. However, in the presence of excess water, correct temperature, and organic material, these spores can grow hyphae and begin to reproduce. The full-cycle of a mold spore to a full-colony can be between 48 and 72 hours in ideal conditions.

The presence of mold colonies can be damaging to both your home and contents. Most molds use enzymes to breakdown and digest organic matter. Over time, this digestion process can cause permanent harm to semi-porous items in the home. Items like hardwood flooring, drywall, and upholstery use porous or semi-porous materials that can become so infested with mold that they need a full replacement. SERVPRO can provide expert mold remediation technicians to your property to correct the moisture problem and remove contaminated materials.

  • Our applied microbial remediation technicians (AMRT) have qualifications that allow them to identify and remediate common household molds.
  • We can investigate your property to discover the extent of a microbial growth issue and eliminate the cause to reduce the likelihood of returning points.
  • SERVPRO prides itself on returning residential properties to a preloss condition by utilizing the latest technology, theory, and equipment to fight against mold growth.

If you suspect a microbial infestation in your home, contact SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

Why does SERVPRO Wear Hazmat Suits when Working on a Flooded House?

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

dark storm clouds Did you know that floodwater contains contaminants? Never enter floodwaters without protective gear.

We Need to Use Extra Precautions when Mitigating Homes in Fort Lee, Beginning with Floodwater Removal

Flooding in Fort Lee involves foul water – water containing microscopic parasites and other biological matter and chemicals that dissolved in the water. Other dangers include sharp items that can cut or puncture the skin. Even scrapes that might seem minor in different situations can cause serious health effects.

Flood information given to residents in Fort Lee includes warnings about the dangers caused by the water. High risks remain present, even in areas where the water has drained out and no longer seems to pose a real threat. Silt and mud are denser than it looks, mainly because it is wet. Movement of such material or your belongings can create problems when removing floodwater from your home. We use personal protective equipment or PPE to help keep our team members safe from various dangers.

Different components of our PPE and their primary use are:

  • Boots, to protect the feet from sharp items, skin from microbes, and insulation from shock near live electrical circuits.
  • Gloves, for protecting hands from a multitude of dangers.
  • Full body suits, tucked into boots and gloves, help keep regular clothing clean and germ-free.
  • Masks and respirators, so we can avoid breathing in any airborne particles.

While we remove small pockets of floodwater, we continue to wear our PPE. Many of the risks dissipated with eliminating the standing water, but hazards like electrical shock remain.

We ensure your home is safe and livable before considering the job-ready for a final walkthrough. We do more than pumping the water out – we also dry and clean everything, disinfect where needed, deodorize, and protect against microbial infestation. We check the moisture content of your hardwood floors and restore any demolition work like drywall tear-outs, as well.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee provides a comprehensive service to residents in flood-struck areas, including Palisades Park, NJ, Leonia, NJ, and Edgewater, NJ. Always ready to serve our community, property owners can contact us round-the-clock by calling (201) 496-6024.

What Methods Are Used to Clean Soot, Ash, and Smoke in a Property?

10/29/2020 (Permalink)

Combusting Materials Produce Significant Soiling of a Property

Why do smoke residues stick to surfaces?

At high temperatures, smoke residues and soots can bond to surfaces in your Fort Lee home. Once there is a reduction in temperature, some of these soils remain chemically bonded to the surface. A vital part of a fire restoration technician training is how to break the connection between soil and a surface without causing further harm to the structure or contents. The methods we use to break this bond can be chemical, agitative, or aggressive. Each method has different characteristics, and trained technicians must choose the correct one for each part of your home. Breaking the bonds between soots and surfaces often means the items can return to a good-condition following a fire without resorting to the increasing cost of replacing them.

What makes up smoke residues?

When performing fire cleanup in your Fort Lee home, it is essential to determine the type of smoke residue before cleaning. When materials combust, they alter chemically as solid turns to gas. These materials chemically change depending on the type of material, either synthetic or natural, and the temperature of the fire. When coming into contact with surfaces, the heat and pressure can result in further chemical reactions. When dealing with fire soots or smoke residues, it is essential to act cautiously to avoid inadvertently causing extra harm. Light-vacuuming or dry brushing surfaces is a safe way to remove smoke residues. However, not all residues respond well to water, chemical cleaning agents, or temperature. Some residues may spread around when water and scrubbing are introduced. This is a situation that can be avoided by using professional restoration technicians.

How do different methods work to reduce fire soiling in a property?

  • Chemical cleaning methods generally dissolve, chemically alter or suspend the soils within the cleaning agent to be rinsed away.
  • Agitation cleaning repeatedly scrubs a part of the soil using brushes, roto machines, or steel wool to loosen the bond enough for the surface to be washed.
  • Aggressive cleaning methods focus on removing surface layers through blasting sodium, sand, or glass particles against the surface. This method often requires refinishing the surface.

How do cleaning products alter soots or soils?

When materials combust, they release numerous particles into the atmosphere. The temperature and pressure causes it to seek out cold surfaces. This phenomenon is why fires appear to billow out smoke, and interior drawers or cabinets often show significant soiling signs. Chemically altering soil can help to release the bond between smoke residue and material. Detergent is a household product that chemically transforms soils by emulsifying compounds into a foam and then cleaning away with water. SERVPRO technicians may attempt to address the pH balance when performing chemical altering of material.

How does pH balance affect restoration?

  • Using pH litmus paper, soil testing is used to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a surface.
  • Alkaline soots and soils dissolve best in equal-weighted cleaning solutions
  • Mixing and applying the necessary products with sufficient 'dwell time' which allows for chemical alteration to take place

How does agitated cleaning reduce soot and smoke damages?

Agitative cleaning is commonly used by all homeowners, whether washing dishes or scrubbing surfaces. The cleaning principle is much the same in the restoration industry, albeit with more robust equipment and tools. Friction produces heat, and the two together can help to dislodge soots from surfaces. One piece of equipment we use to accentuate this process is a rotary machine. A rotary engine can be fitted with steel wool or robust material and is then spun at hundreds of revolutions per minute. These can be applied directly to surfaces and do not involve water, helping dry smoke damages. Often a rotary machine is run over a body several times to remove all soots and double up as a machine for polishing or buffing surfaces.

How do immersion cleaning methods remove soots from items?

  • The item is fully-submerged with an appropriate cleaning solvent or solution. Items must be strong enough to withstand full immersion in the solvent for this type of cleaning.
  • Ultrasonic soundwaves create millions of bubbles within the immersion tank.
  • As bubbles burst against the item, they produce heat and friction, which can help restore valuable metals or items like drapery rods.

Knowing and applying the right methods of cleaning agents to apply to fire damages can reduce secondary harm and return your property to its preloss condition. Contact SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 now.

Which Mold Removal Firm Offers Residential Services that Follow the EPA Protocols?

"Mold" If your home is overtaken by mold you need to call the professionals. Call SERVPRO today for remediation assistance.

Fort Lee Homeowners Looking for Mold Removal Need Help Not Hype, Why SERVPRO's Expert Remediators Fit the Bill.

Everyone, from your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers,  to the media, has opinions on how seriously you should take the possibility of mold growth inside your Fort Lee dwelling. Cautious homeowners always want to be aware of issues, including mold outbreaks, that can negatively impact their home's structure and contents. Because some individuals are susceptible to the irritants of increased mold levels, you might be concerned about health effects as well. Panicking is not the way to approach the problem. Instead, we take a constructive approach, why we settled on employing the procedure developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Is Residential Mold Removal an Impossible Task?

When crafting a mold removal response to Fort Lee infestations, it is crucial that you understand household molds' life cycle and growth habits. A mold outbreak does not mean that your housekeeping is suspect. It merely indicates that the mold spores present in almost all environments found a moisture source and can multiply. Eradication of mold spores is an unattainable goal. Still, with the help of a trained and disciplined mold remediation crew such as our technicians, active mold colonies can be removed and future outbreaks minimized through moisture management.

How Can Remediation Experts and Homeowners Partner to Remove Active Mold Growth and Damage?

You are the best "test" for mold issues, keeping a close watch for the minor leaks and spills that fuel mold development in your home. This is why SERVPRO responds to your request for removal assistance with pointed questions. The long term benefits of working with us might be our background in water damage mitigation and remediation. When we inspect a suspected mold invasion, we inquire about signs that might indicate unnoticed water losses:

  • Recent upticks in water bills
  • Musty smells
  • Softened building materials like drywall or packed-down insulation
  • "Spongy" feeling or squeaking floors
  • Darker stains on surfaces

Once we move in on the moisture source, we find the mold, which we contain using heavy plastic partitions and then remove by scraping, brushing, and even blasting with "gentle" abrasives like soda. We vacuum and wipe down the residues, then bag up all moldy materials for disposal as hazardous waste.

Why SERVPRO of Fort Lee for mold removal? Vigilance concerning early signs of growth and multiplication of household mold naturally leads to hiring a company adhering to the EPA remediation protocols. Call (201) 496-6024 to discuss your options.

SERVPRO Technicians Can Provide Emergency Mitigation and Restore Your Fort Lee Home to Pre-Loss Condition

Coastal towns such as Fort Lee can be subject to storms at any time of the year. Rising sea levels enhance the chance of coastal storms and flooding. Over the past 93 years, this quaint town has experienced approximately 12” of sea-level rise. The higher the sea level, the higher the starting point for high tides and storm surges. Both of which increase the frequency and severity of flooding.

What Can I Do Before Help Arrives?

When homeowners experience a flood, their first thought is to do what they can to help. The best thing you can do is to be prepared before the storms hit. Your family should have an emergency plan in place. Make sure everyone in your family knows where to go and what to do in the case of an emergency disaster situation. Be prepared to contact our professionals for floodwater extraction in Fort Lee as soon as possible.

If you know flooding is imminent, remove heirlooms and valuables to higher levels. Keep copies of all your essential documents in a waterproof bag to take with you. Cut off power to your utilities, if possible. Never, ever risk you or your family's lives for possessions. Always listen to local news and evacuate when recommended.

What are the Main Threats to My Home?

Floodwaters bring with them conditions that are not found in typical water intrusions. The type of water is the primary concern. Floodwater is known as blackwater and creates a hazardous situation. Microbial growth, bacteria, and other contaminants infest the water and require PPE to enter the water. Never enter your home while contaminated water is still in place. Other potential threats include:

  • Structural Damage – Structural elements can weaken and deteriorate the longer they are exposed to moisture.
  • Material Deterioration – Content and construction materials deteriorate rapidly when left in standing water.
  • Secondary Damage – Mold can develop within 24 hours if water damage is left untreated.

What Does Flood Cleanup Involve?

Extracting the contaminated water is going to be the main concern. When floodwaters surge through your house, it is absorbed by many types of materials. Walls, insulation, and sheetrock are examples of materials that typically cannot get restored in this situation. Removing the wet sections immediately is vital. If left untreated, moisture can spread to unaffected areas. Basically, the process involves:

  • Removing and disposing of items which cannot be salvaged
  • Muck out and removal of debris, mud, and silt
  • Scrubbing walls and floors
  • Drying process
  • Content management and pack-out if needed
  • Sanitizing and disinfecting
  • Deodorizing

We have powerful trash pumps that can remove water that contains debris. Our technicians are trained to mitigate flood damage. They implement moisture tracking and dry procedures to return your home to preloss condition.

What Happens to My Walls and Floors?

Flooding can leave behind all kinds of debris. Leaves, mud, and silt are common. SERVPRO techs use shovels, rakes, and other equipment to handle the mess left behind. The soils that are part of that cling to walls and floors. It can be challenging to remove the dirt and stains that remain. Our team employs a combination of methods to mitigate the damage. This includes such techniques as manual scrubbing with dusters and brushes. Professional cleaning agents get used along with antimicrobial and antifungal products to clean and sanitize.

Carpeting and padding in a floodwater situation is a loss. The contamination is too significant to restore either the carpet or padding. A porous material, such as carpet and wood, are not easily salvaged. You can be sure if it can be salvaged and restored, our technicians do so.

What About My Furniture?

As with flooring furniture that is constructed from a porous material such as wood or upholstery fabric may be a loss. The contaminated water is too great a risk when it comes to bacteria and other biohazards. It is much safer to replace these items than to attempt to restore them. SERVPRO always works with you and your insurance adjuster to determine what stays and what goes.

Professional Storm Damage Cleanup

There is much more involved in mitigating a flood scene. Factors like how fast the water recedes and how long things sit in standing water impact the floodwater extraction process. Content management may involve removing the contents of your home to our warehouses for cleaning and restoration.

Our company knows how devastating a flood can be to your family. We have homes and families in Fort Lee too. We strive to take the stress of flood cleanup off your shoulders. You can trust our technicians to leave your home, “Like it never even happened.” Place your home into the hands of a company that cares not only about your home but about your family too.

Why Can I Not Recover Food Items from The Pantry After a Fire in Fort Lee?

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

Dark burnt rural wooden house corridor after fire Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee (201) 496-6024 to assist with your emergency fire damage, recovery, and restoration needs.

Fire Damage In My Fort Lee Home

A fire in the kitchen of your Fort Lee home can cause a great deal of damage. The most obvious is the burned and charred areas. For example, if the fire started around the oven, cupboards and countertops may be damaged along with ceilings. Small fires may burn slowly and produce a great deal of smoke, while hot fires cause less smoke and produce more heat. Both can cause damage to your food items stored in the kitchen and pantry.

SERVPRO can assist and guide homeowners concerning any food items that can be saved after fire damage to your Fort Lee home. The heat from a fire can cause plastics to melt or burn, producing toxic chemicals mixed with the smoke from the actual fire. Even our cupboards contain copious amounts of glue, which burn and produce chemicals deposited on surfaces, including food items, which can be harmful if ingested.

Can I Save Canned Goods and Beverages?
Canned goods and beverages can also be damaged during a fire. Labels may have been burned, making it impossible to tell what the contents are. The surface may also be coated with soot and toxic chemicals from the fire.

Although it is tempting to save everything possible, SERVPRO has found that homeowners should avoid using these products. Even the chemical composition of the products may have changed due to heat from the fire. Our team can review all food items with the homeowner as part of our service, inventory any that must be discarded, and remove them along with the charred materials damaged by the fire.

SERVPRO can remove all of the odor-causing materials from the burned area and clean walls, shampoo carpets, and upholstery to remove smoke residue and odor. Clothing exposed to the smoke residue is also carefully cleaned to avoid further damage and retention of odor from the fire.

Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee (201) 496-6024 to assist with your emergency fire damage, recovery, and restoration needs.

Protect your Edgewater Home after Flooding and Water Leaks by Inviting a Professional Company to Apply Industry Best Practices

You may be the unlucky homeowner whose pipes burst and leak all over the house, or a storm damages your roof and leaves a hole for rainwater to fall through. Regardless of the size and severity of your water event, the best decision you can make is to consult with an expert team about the restoration process. Following the advice of well-meaning friends or guessing at an appropriate humidity level for your home can place your health in jeopardy and vulnerable to future complications.

Is my wet-dry vacuum enough to extract water from my home?

Wet-dry vacuums have a place in the water extraction process, but they are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Each home has its nuances, and our SERVPRO team can work around them. For example, a home with hardwood floors requires a gradual drying process to protect them, whereas a home with wet carpet may require complete removal. Whatever your situation is, our team is ready to handle it. Among the reasons why you should call SERVPRO, you may find the following-

  • Our equipment is industry-specific and flexible in addressing water remnants of all sizes. From truck-mounted to handheld extractors, we can handle them all.
  • Aside from removing water, we can apply different methods to spray antimicrobial solutions to protect your home from bacteria.
  • When dry-wall is wet, our team can repair and replace it as needed, avoiding further coordination with other contractors.

Is There a Good Way to Prepare in Advance for Flood Damage Recovery Needs in Fort Lee?

8/11/2020 (Permalink)

Home check list SERVPRO understands how important it is to prepare for an emergency situation. We can help you with our Emergency Ready Plan.

Resigned to Yearly Storm-Related Flood Damage in Your Fort Lee Commercial Building? Call SERVPRO to Plan for a Better Forecast with Our Emergency READY Profile (ERP).

The hurricane and tropical storm season is upon us here in Fort Lee, and that can mean that the risk of flood damage to your business becomes imminent. There is a range of ways to approach a yearly extreme weather threat, but savvy business owners prepare rather than react. Many experts advise flood preparations, and you can pick and choose from among the ideas your local government, your industry associations, your business partners, and a raft of others suggest.

Even If I Can Reduce the Flooding's Effect, How Can I Prepare for the Aftermath?

In a perfect world, floods damaging Fort Lee businesses like yours could be avoided entirely with proactive efforts. Unfortunately, the steady increase in extreme weather systems and the difficulty of predicting other natural or human-made disasters makes such an outcome impossible. Risks constantly loom, but that does not mean you simply give up and take your knocks as they come. Instead, partner with a reputable and reliable flood damage mitigation and remediation firm to craft a hybrid preparedness and recovery plan.

What Is the Emergency READY Profile and Plan (ERP), and How Do I Get Onboard?

SERVPRO offers a comprehensive disaster recovery planning process with our Emergency READY Profile and Plan (ERP). An ERP's goal is to collaboratively work, business to business, on a concise but complete blueprint for disaster restoration. We don’t insist on forcing "square pegs into round holes," but instead, confer with you every step of the way.  The mission is to produce an individualized and workable game plan for "disaster day," including storm-related flooding. Start with a simple phone call to our 24-hour line and ask to schedule an ERP assessment.

How Does the ERP Assessment Process Work?

We want to gain a working knowledge of how you operate your company, including the ways you deliver products and services. Nothing beats walking through your door and observing you and your employees working and interacting with your clients or customers. In addition to experiencing how you conduct business, we also need a chance to inspect your physical plant. During the active response to a disaster, we have little time to get a feel for the layout of your space, but the ERP's proactive approach allows us to start planning how best to mitigate ongoing flood damage and order remediation tasks. Expect us to make sketches, take notes, and take pictures of:

  • Offices
  • Restrooms (public and staff)
  • Production areas
  • Retail sales floors
  • Staff break areas and lockers
  • Storage and inventory areas
  • Warehouse spaces
  • Kitchens, prep areas, and dining rooms for restaurants, cafes, and diners
  • Equipment
  • Utility configurations and shut off valves

Are You Interested in My Ideas and Viewpoint During the Development of the ERP?

We do not pretend to be experts in your industry or to know your space as intimately as do you. Help us build the most robust yet concise plan by sharing with us your concerns and insights. Let us know if particular spaces or surfaces flooded in the past. Talk about how and in which spaces you see your staff operating even as we provide mitigation and remediation services. A company that can maintain a presence even during disaster recovery has the best chance of surviving past the emergency. Our approach can include partitioning and containing areas of your larger spaces to allow your business to continue safely and without water incursion or contamination and debris drift. We have that strategy ready to roll with the ERP.

What Else Can I Do to Collaborate on Our ERP?

We will recommend adaptations to minimize your flood damage risk after our walkthrough. Take the time to implement these best practices-based ideas, and talk to us if something seems inappropriate or impossible. Use our handy mobile app to fill in details and keep us up to date as things change. Critical information you can input includes:

  • Names and contact information of trusted staff
  • A list of individuals who can authorize interventions if you are out of town or otherwise unavailable during a crisis
  • Lists of vendors and contractors instrumental in designing and installing your setup and equipment
  • A clear statement that we are your restoration company choice, permitting us to start work when practicable

Reach out to SERVPRO of Fort Lee to develop a detailed and effective plan to streamline any flood damage mitigation and remediation efforts you might need after seasonal storms. Schedule an assessment for both anticipated and unexpected issues by calling (201) 496-6024.

How Do I Restore My Cliffside Park Home After A Flood?

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

Flooding in the kitchen and livingroom We are here for you!

Call SERVPRO Restoration Teams to Repair and Restore Your Cliffside Park Residence

There’s More Than Floodwater Here, Can Your Restoration Teams Remove It All?

Flood damage to Cliffside Park homes always includes debris picked up by the floodwater before it enters a home. SERVPRO has specially trained Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRTs) that can remove every type of debris along with the water to return your home to its original condition.

What Do WRTs Do First?

Since the debris can include soil, animal waste, sewer contents, and other contaminants, WRTs spray an anti-bacterial cleaner on the water and every exposed surface. This eliminates the immediate health threat so team members can bring in pumps and smaller extractors to draw out the floodwater.

After drawing out the standing water and water trapped in carpets, technicians detach the carpets and pads for immediate disposal along with other debris. Removal eliminates a large source of contaminants that can not only stain and ruin the floors underneath but also get rid of the source of odors that can permeate your home, resulting in further restoration costs.

What Does the Restoration Team Do Next?

After removing the water, SERVPRO has Applied Structural Drying Technicians (ASDs) to complete the restoration process. These team members train to use specialized devices like dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture from the air and out of nearby property like upholstered furniture and even drywall panels that absorbed a portion of the floodwater.

As the ASTs carefully dry out your personal and structural property, they also examine each item for contamination from the floodwater. Team members use an extensive inventory of cleaners designed for everything from glass to marble to wood to remove the soil and other contaminants without harming their surfaces.

To learn more about what our Teams can do for your home here or in Edgewater, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 today. We are here for you.

How Can I Clean Smoke Residue?

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

smoke and soot on wall and ceiling above kitchen cabinets SERVPRO is the professional restoration service you can trust to restore your fire damaged home.

Cleaning Different Types of Smoke Residue in your Cliffside Park Home May Require a Professional Service

Understanding how the smoke and fire travels within your Cliffside Park home is essential to the restoration process. Whenever a fire ignites in your home, it is necessary to understand the fire theory, which differentiates the ensuing smoke and soot depending on their origin and path. The average homeowner does not need to concern themselves about making this distinction when they call an experienced company.

In Cliffside Park, fire damage is a job for the team to come to your rescue with the expertise and equipment. At SERVPRO, we train in the classroom and on-the-job to bring industry best practices and the latest technology into your home. As we begin the restoration process, we survey your home to determine the scope of the damage and moisture levels. When we pre-test different areas, we can plan on proper cleaning solutions based on the type of smoke damage we are managing.

How does smoke behave?

When our SERVPRO team speaks about smoke and fire behavior, we take into account that smoke tends to rise and move along your pipes, which invites it to travel through your home. As we consider the equipment and techniques available to us, we attempt to classify in one of the following categories:

  • Dry smoke- happens when natural materials burn, such as wood and paper. It happens fast and at high temperatures.
  • Wet smoke- happens when manmade materials burn, such as plastic. It leaves a sticky residue and foul odor.
  • Protein fires- tend to happen when food products burn and leave a strong smell behind with little visible residue.

Some other types of materials such as fuel can leave residue and damage in their wake, but our SERVPRO team can handle virtually all types from start to finish. Our deodorizing and sanitizing techniques round up our restoration efforts to ensure your house returns to mint condition.

Don't leave the restoration to chance. Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 and let us make your home "Like it never even happened."

Contact a Good Remediation Service in Fort Lee to Neutralize Foul Floodwater Odors with  EPA and OSHA-Approved Chemical Agents

Fort Lee is no stranger to severe weather and flooding. The city’s location on the Hudson River, not far from the northeast coastline, means that it suffers the effects of severe storms throughout the year. In the summer and fall, it weathers frequent tropical storms and full-blown hurricanes. During the winter and spring months, powerful Nor’easters often assault it. When these storms pass through, they usually bring severe flooding with them.

How Do Companies Like SERVPRO Clean Up and Restore Flood-Damaged Businesses?

Floodwaters usually bring with them odorous contaminants, like dead animals, human waste, and hazardous chemicals. SERVPRO and other Fort Lee commercial flood damage cleanup and remediation companies attempt to neutralize these odors by:

    •    Ventilating your home with high-velocity box fans
    •    Removing remaining odorous chemicals and particles from the air with state-of-the-art air scrubbers
    •    Using ultra-low volume foggers to inject disinfectants, antifungals, and deodorants into even the most difficult-to-access areas
    •    Spraying disinfectants and other antimicrobials directly onto impacted surfaces

After SERVPRO completes this service on your business property, our workers have often eliminated most harmful microbes and unpleasant smells.

What Kinds of Chemical Agents Does SERVPRO Use to Neutralize Unpleasant Smells?

Our highly experienced technicians deal with unwanted odors by first removing their source and then eliminating any remaining smell-producing microorganisms. Some of the chemical products we employ to neutralize odors are:

    •    Disinfectants and antifungals that kill or slow the proliferation of viruses, bacteria, and fungi
    •    Agents that force odorous particles out of the air and onto easily cleaned surfaces by combining with them
    •    Agents that reduce humidity by absorbing moisture
    •    Odor masking substances that cover up unwanted smells with other, more pleasing odors

SERVPRO, using these scientifically designed chemicals, can effectively get rid of most foul odors associated with flood damage.

If your business is ever impacted by flooding, you need the assistance of a professional flood damage cleanup and restoration service. Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 for help.

What is the Best Way to Handle Water Coming into My Attic?

5/13/2020 (Permalink)

storm warning sign with cloudy skies It is storm season in NJ. Should a storm damage your home, call SERVPRO for fast remediation.

SERVPRO Technicians Know Storm Water Entering Your Fort Lee Home can Cause Severe Damage Needing Professional Restoration Services

When big storms deliver considerable damage to Fort Lee properties, one thing each situation has in common is the water cleanup needs to begin as soon as possible. If a roof gets damaged from high winds or hail, water can start to enter and run downward following the rules of gravity and causing issues to ceilings, walls, and anything in its path.

Can Insulation Get Restored from Storm or Flood Damage?

A few factors figure into the insulation outcome in your Fort Lee home affected by storm or flood damage. The type of insulation is one of the most significant determinants. Unless it is fiberglass insulation, then it may be a loss. SERVPRO techs can collect the fiberglass insulation and dry it outside the loss area and prep it for reinstallation.

Another consideration is the type of water affecting the insulation. If it is wet from rainwater from a roof leak or broken window, it can get restored in many cases. However, if groundwater is saturated with the insulation, no matter what the construction materials are, it requires the removal and disposal of a biohazard.

Actions to Secure a Property from Further Water Loss

When storm damage happens, the technicians work quickly to ascertain all areas that are exposed and need protection from allowing further loss within the home. Common tactics include:

  • Placing tarps over areas of damaged roofing
  • Using heavy gauge plastic or boards over broken windows
  • Containment around loss areas to stop the spread of airborne droplets
  • Arrange for removal of fallen tree limbs

What to Expect During Mitigation in an Attic

When water loss events occur in a Fort Lee attic, the first goal of the SERVPRO techs is to limit any further loss to the home. After tarping over any leaks in the roof to deter any more water from entering, they can use a vacuum with a specialized attachment for insulation collection. Next, they move on to use their equipment to remove any remaining water that seeped under the insulation. When mitigation efforts are underway in an attic, due to the amount of dirt and dust, the techs commonly put up barriers over doorways if anything gets kicked up from all the activity, it does not wind up in the home.

The ceilings directly below the loss area get inspected to see if any drip-through occurred. The techs do not rely only on visual inspections but use various types of detection equipment, including Forward-looking infrared (FLIR) cameras that readily point out areas that are cooler with water. This equipment is ideal to use to "see" behind walls, within floor joists, and under flooring.

Signs of Water Loss in Structural Elements in a Home

When water migrates from an attic space downward, it leaves tell-tale signs along the way. One of the most alarming is water dripping through a ceiling onto furnishings or the floor below. Other signs include:

  • Stains on walls and ceilings
  • Paint "bubbles"
  • Warped or buckled sheetrock
  • Sagging ceilings
  • Loose or fallen ceiling tiles

Drying Configurations are Unique to Each Job Site

When drying a property with storm damage, SERVPRO technicians determine the exact scale of the area that requires drying. They can deploy air movers en masse over a broad area or build tented or tubed drying chambers to direct warm, dry area over a specific, targeted area. Our goal is the attainment of preset drying targets as fast as possible at drying a loss area. Achieving drying goals lessens the chances for additional loss and secondary issues that can occur when there is too much time between the first loss event and the time to dry it.

Handling Contents Affected by Water

When water drips down from an attic leak and gets furnishings wet, SERVPRO techs test the material of upholstered items and carpet to determine if they are suitable for the most common methods of drying and cleaning. Techniques such as standing sofa cushions on their ends during drying assist with speeding along the mitigation process. Then problems as water spots and stains are addressed to ensure we restore the pieces to their preloss condition. As a final step, the techs apply any odor control methods to handle any remaining water odors resident in the property.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 for assistance with storm and flood damage in your home. The technicians are available 24/7, arrive quickly, and restore your home to its preloss condition.

How can I prevent emergency floodwaters from causing permanent damage to my home?

4/21/2020 (Permalink)

Sign "Watch for high water during heavy rains" We know how hazardous flood damage can be to your Fort Lee home. Call us right away at (201) 496-6024.

Road overflow, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding can cause thousands of dollars worth of losses in your Fort Lee home. Using professional restorers can help to keep losses to a minimum and reduce permanent damages.

How can I prepare and prevent flooding during the winter season?

It is not uncommon for homeowners to experience flood damage in Fort Lee. These emergencies can be devastating and lead to temporary relocation as well as causing severe harm to your home. While flood emergencies can be sudden, there are some precautions you can put in place ahead of time to assist you. Checking your insurance coverage for all types of flood-related harm as well as inspecting drainage equipment in your home. Drainage equipment may include sump pumps for garages and basements as well as gutters or pipes, which are under significantly more stress during the winter months.

If you are expecting heavy rainfall, you may want to install a vapor barrier in the crawlspace of your home. Vapor barriers can be very effective at reducing water issues by blocking any moisture in your crawl space from reaching the upper levels of your home. Keep an eye on local and government weather warnings throughout the winter period. You may want to put together a flood-preparedness kit. Ideas of what to include in your kit can be found on both federal and state websites.

What should I include in a Flood preparedness kit?

- Essential documentation such as insurance papers, banking, prescriptions, as well as phone numbers. By sealing these documents in a watertight bag, you can ensure you maintain access to your accounts in an emergency.

- Medicine both prescription medication as well as over the counter aids. You may also want to include freshwater

- Transistor radios

- Flashlights as well as essential tools

- Batteries

- Dry non-perishable goods

- Cash

I have been temporarily relocated from the area during a flood, what happens to my home?

Our team here at SERVPRO has extensive experience at dealing with properties when inhabitants are off-site or temporarily evacuated. This period is critical in the overall expense of your claim. Large amounts of standing water can degrade and migrate, which can, in some cases, result in severe structural damage to the home. You may need remodeling or rebuilding of some areas of the home. However, first, we need to provide a safe working space.

Professional restorers can enter your property to perform vital mitigation tasks. Scoping the property, removing large volumes of water as well as deodorizing or disinfecting the affected area can all be essential to the mitigation process. These efforts can not only prevent secondary damages like mold growth or water degradation but also provide a clean working environment for specialist repairs. Contents can be moved to safe distances from the affected areas of your home. These may be on-site in unaffected rooms or taken to an external storage facility.

How quickly can you remove floodwaters from my home?

Water removal is a time-sensitive procedure. Every second that moisture is in your home, it can migrate to previously unaffected areas, affect structural cavities, be absorbed by natural materials, or create the ideal conditions for mold growth. Our service teams work against the clock to ensure a significant reduction in standing water within the first few hours of arriving on-site.

First, we assess what type of scenario we are dealing with, whether the water intrusion includes solid-waste, how we are going to transport it from your home as well as the standing water level. High-pressure pumps are just one type of removal equipment we can use with sufficient lift to pump water out from subterranean areas of the home. In most flood emergencies, a combination of extraction equipment, as well as pumps, is necessary to reduce water volume substantially in the first twenty-four hours.

Once water removal is complete, what restoration services should be complete before it is safe to return to my home?

- Pre-cleaning and conditioning of fabrics such as carpets

- Replacement of affected drywall or other inexpensive building materials

- Wet and Dry-cleaning of contents either on or off-site

- Disinfectant of some areas of the home to return it to a sanitary condition

- Deodorization using Ultra-low volume (ULV) fogging equipment

- Refinishing of surfaces as well as base-coating for a uniform finish

We pride ourselves in returning a flooded property to its preloss condition. Our meticulous cleaning, refinishing, and deodorizing can ensure that when you do return to your property, it is "Like it never even happened."

For all types of flooding emergencies, contact SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496- 6024 immediately.

Catch Basin Blockages Can Flood Your Fort Lee Split-Level Home

Catch basins and culvert systems are one of the most elaborate underground networks for redirecting water in Fort Lee to places where it does not damage homes or businesses. The reliability of this network hinges on the intake points, the catch basins, remaining clear of debris and blockages. Gratings can get covered over or plugged, which can prevent water from getting into culverts and diverted away.

Especially in the fall months where leaves can fall from trees for weeks and weeks on end, these leaves can block off catch basins and cause flood damage for Fort Lee homes. With many residences in the area being split-level homes, overflowing runoff water from the roadways can find a way into the partial subterranean level of your home. Standing water in this living space can lead to structural deterioration, build back, decontamination, and more.

Because We're Faster To Any Size Disaster, our SERVPRO team can mobilize quickly amid an emergency like this to reach your home within hours of your first notice of loss. While we prioritize extraction first to remove standing water, we must remain mindful of affected contents and the potential for contamination, as invading water can get exposed to oils, bacteria, dirt, and other threats before entering the property.

Often the initial levels of intruding water in your home do not warrant the use of submersible pumps but rather a combination of attachments like carpet and squeegee wands on wet vacuums. These portable extraction devices allow our technicians to move from one affected room to another quickly. Because of the threat of contamination, many of the exposed surfaces require controlled demolition and replacement, which can also help to streamline moisture removal when saturated materials get discarded.

Overflowing catch basins can cause problems for your home if you are not aware of the situation. If you are battling flood damage losses in your home, our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team can help with a fast and reliable response amid the disaster. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (201) 496-6024.

We Put The Flames Of Worry Out In Fort Lee After A Fire

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

A fire in this room covered the walls in soot and smoke damage We have the experience, expertise and equipment to handle your fire damage. Call us day or night, we are ready to respond right away.

Fire Damage Restoration In Fort Lee Can Involve A Large Amount Of Debris Removal

Once an inferno ignites on your Fort Lee property, the flames can quickly spread and possibly torch a large number of your building materials and structural components. When conducting fire damage restoration, a professional company such as SERVPRO can end up spending a lot of their work hours removing burnt debris. In some cases, the burnt items in your home can be saved by cleaning, but if the fire was severe, demolition procedures could occur.

During fire damage restoration in Fort Lee, the first thing our SERVPRO technicians do is inspect the building for safety hazards. If light fixtures were affected, we can shut off the power and bring in other lights so that no electrical hazards exist. We can also go through your house and look for any other potential safety issues, such as fall and trip hazards. For example, if burnt sections of your ceiling are hanging down, we can safely remove them so that they do not fall on any of the workers or other building occupants. Or, if there is a large number of burnt items that have already fallen to the ground, we can clear paths for occupants so that no tripping dangers exist.

Before working towards demolition or debris removal, our SERVPRO crew also makes sure that the building is sealed from the outside. During structural blazes, windows often shatter when they get too hot, or the firefighters break your doors and windows to extinguish the flames. If there are burnt chunks of wall, doors, or broken windows after the blaze takes place and your home is exposed to the outdoor elements, we can go through and board up and seal off the openings in your structure.

Once the work site is deemed safe, we first determine what got charred so badly to where it needs to be removed and replaced and what we think we can save. To start the demolition process, we first start removing any loose burnt debris on your floors. Next, we start removing sections of your ceiling and drywall that got severely charred. When disposing of burnt fire damaged items in your house, we always put the debris into sealed industrial strength trash bags so that no soot can spread to previously unaffected areas of your structure.

If you ever need helping cleaning up burnt materials after a fire takes its toll on your property, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 24/7.

The Right Tools Clean Away Fire Damage in Edgewater Kitchen

2/24/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Stove We can get your property back to the state it was in before the unfortunate incident.

SERVPRO Has the Tools and Experienced Technicians you need for your Home’s Fire Damage

Kitchens are by far one of the most common rooms in a residence to receive fire damage. From dinner-gone-wrong scenarios to incorrect use of appliances causing flame-ups, they all leave behind some form of fire loss to clean.

Many homeowners assume when no structural loss happened, the aftermath of fire damage in an Edgewater kitchen is something they just have to live with, such as visible smoke on the ceiling. However, any amount of soot has the potential to be an irritant, and it can spread through the air or foot traffic to other areas of the home, spreading the pungent odor of the fire throughout the property.

Inspection Before Cleaning

The SERVPRO techs inspect properties and test residues before cleaning to ensure they make the correct choice for both the type of smoke they are removing as well for the surfaces they are working with. This attention to detail inhibits the potential for loss by using an improper cleaning method and gives the homeowner the best outcome possible.

Cleaning Wet Smoke

This quickly smearing mess is the most common type of smoke damage in a kitchen, and it is so tough to remove that it often requires a solvent-based cleaning agent to release the grip the residue has on surfaces such as countertops, cabinets, and ceilings. Many of SERVPRO's exclusive cleaning formulas have dual action as a deodorizing agent, which assists with reducing the odors as it works to lift away the smoke from surfaces.

Specialized Cleaning Applications for Ceilings

This is one of the hardest areas to clean away smoke damage. The techs use wet sponges on extension poles to lift away the residue without grinding it into the surface. When the techs finish, if any residual odors remain in the kitchen, they can choose from a diverse array of odor control procedures to ensure there are no reminders of the fire left behind.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 stands ready to assist local property owners with the cleanup of any size fire damage to their homes. With their extensive training and advanced equipment, the techs restore the residence to its pre-fire condition, "Like it never even happened."

Commercial Water Damage In Your Fort Lee Property

2/23/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged property We can help you restore your retail building complex to the way it was before, “Like it never even happened.”

Commercial Water Damage Technicians In Fort Lee Can Use Thermography To Find Leaks

Buildings like your shopping center in Fort Lee can have a complex plumbing system with several pipes running in various directions. It is possible that one day your plumbing system could fail and cause you excessive commercial water damage. Since your retail building complex has so many different pipes going through it, sometimes it can be hard to find the source of the leak.

During your commercial water damage project in Fort Lee, thermal imaging can help determine where the moisture is entering your structure from and help our SERVPRO team determine what got wet. These specialized cameras can help us find moisture if it made its way into tight spots that we can not visibly locate. Once we know where all of the moisture went after you had a pipe burst, we can then know what we have to do to mitigate all of the problems caused.

During the mitigation process, we often use infrared or thermal imaging cameras not only to locate moisture but also to monitor your wet building materials and contents during the Applied Structural Drying or ASD process. Even though infrared cameras do not technically detect moisture, it is possible to figure out where moisture is present by using the infrared images of heat comparisons. The cameras show the difference in temperatures on the various contents and building materials inside your shopping center. In most cases, when objects inside your structure get wet, there will be a variance in temperature between the wet and dry materials.

One set back with infrared cameras, though, is that they only detect surface temperatures on objects. The cameras do not have x-ray capabilities, so they cannot detect temperatures behind walls or through any other type of materials. However, what is happening with temperature change on the surface of an item can help us figure out what is happening underneath.

When moisture starts to evaporate from wet materials, the surfaces will be cooler than dryer surfaces near it. But if the area is heavily saturated, the surfaces could be warmer than what is surrounding it because moisture has a high ability to hold heat.

If you are ever having trouble finding a leak inside your shopping center, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 24/7. We can help you restore your retail building complex to the way it was before, “Like it never even happened.”

My Carpet is Soaking Wet

Imagine waking up in the morning only to discover a pipe burst overnight and water is covering your whole living room.  Your furniture is absorbing water by the minute, and you can already see the water damage on your wooden tables and some on the hem of your curtains.  Even though your day is already off to a poor start, once you contact a professional water restoration service, you can breathe easier knowing that the problem is being addressed expediently.  A reputable company makes all the difference in minimizing the exposure time for your flooring and furniture as well as anticipate future risks.

If your home in Fort Lee suffers from water damage, SERVPRO is your greatest ally in bringing your home back to normal.  Our competent staff can address water situations of varying sizes and scopes, and we arrive at your home ready to take action.  Our theoretical understanding of the interaction of water and different materials, as well as our hands-on experience, prepare us to develop a clear action plan for each affected area in your home.

Many homeowners despair when they realize their carpets are wet, and they jump to the conclusion that replacement is the only solution.  Although this is true in many cases, our SERVPRO staff may recommend in-place drying for your home. At its most basic level, in-place carpet drying involves the circulation of air and the use of dehumidifiers to extract water damage from the carpet and its pad.  To some, it may appear cumbersome due to the amount of equipment necessary to implement this technique, as well as the extended time it requires. However, the benefit of preserving your carpet and avoid moving furniture around may outweigh the nuisance. Our SERVPRO technicians can help determine whether in-place drying is a reasonable course for your home or if risk factors such as extended water exposure or evidence of mold, make it unsuitable.

Place your trust in SERVPRO of Fort Lee for your water removal needs.  Call us at (201) 496-6024 as soon as the emergency occurs and let us be your ally through the restoration process.  Like you, we want to leave your home, “Like it never even happened.”

Water Damage In Your Fort Lee Preschools

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

water damaged ceiling Containment can keep your doors open as well, while our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team works to finish the restoration of the property.

Accidental Water Damage to Preschools in Fort Lee

The education of the youth here in Fort Lee is not only an aspiration that parents and relatives take seriously but one that our SERVPRO team values as well. We have great institutions for even the earliest preschool years, including Palisades Pre-School & Kindergarten and The Goddard School. Because these buildings are full of young minds making sense of the world, accidents like overflowing sinks and other avenues for water damage can occur.

Because we strive to provide a fast response to these emergencies, we can often address many of the pressing effects of water damage in Fort Lee schools quickly. We have a team of professionals that stays ready to mobilize 24/7 with premier tools and products to make drying and recovery as efficient as possible. Considering how many homes can get affected by the preschool getting temporarily shut down for restoration, our skilled experts work around the clock to get the property back to preloss condition.

Linoleum floor coverings in the bathroom and the concrete subflooring beneath it are generally impenetrable for standing water, but the same cannot get said for other structural elements and construction materials exposed from significant water loss issues. Wood trim along the base of the drywall can be the first sensitive material to become overexposed to standing water and warp or distort due to direct absorption. Our SERVPRO professionals can offer controlled demolition solutions that not only remove this baseboard but can also begin flood cuts for damaged drywall behind this trim when necessary.

Our objective is to limit reconstruction and excessive build back as much as possible, but understand that water loss incidents in your school can sometimes have no other suitable solution but repair. With only moisture concerns in structural cavities, however, our technicians can utilize advanced drying equipment like our InjectiDry positive pressure system to eliminate dampness trapped in wall and ceiling openings. An ancillary objective to water removal and thorough drying is the need to suppress potential mold growth.

If the damage remains limited to a small area in the school, we can often build a drying zone with containment materials like plastic sheeting to regulate temperature, airflow, and other drying factors. Containment can keep your doors open as well, while our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team works to finish the restoration of the property. Give us a call anytime you need us at (201) 496-6024.

Get Fast And Efficient Water Damage Restoration In Your Fort Lee Residence

Water damage does not always result from significant leaks. Small leaks that might go undetected for an extended period can ruin your carpeting or cause electrical faults, warping of wood flooring, swelling of drywall, or sagging of ceilings. If you do not perform restoration on time, you can incur costly repairs, or your home might be unsafe to live in.

The small leaks in your property could be from a cracked tile in the bathroom or a malfunctioning dishwasher, washing machine or water heater. Regardless of what caused the water damage in your Fort Lee residence, SERVPRO can handle the problem. Our technicians can complete any restoration project proficiently.

Water damage poses many dangers in a home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, above-average humidity levels are enough to cause a hazardous environment for the occupants of a home. The recommended moisture levels are around 40 to 60 percent. Anything above that creates a conducive environment for dangerous toxins and mold growth. Mold can cause health effects to the occupants of a property.

One of the most significant steps in water damage restoration is the drying process. If the drying process is not properly undertaken, the property can sustain more water damage. During the drying process, it is possible to face condensation problems. Condensation is the process in which water vapor turns into a liquid. It prevents efficient drying and can also cause secondary damage to your property. Therefore, we note any issues that may arise courtesy of condensation and resolve them professionally. Condensation can happen in:

Wall cavities

From the years we have been in the restoration industry, we have learned that when restorers apply heat on wall surfaces, condensation takes place in the wall cavities. To avoid such a problem, we can use a venting box fan to increase the airflow in the property. Increasing air circulation also speeds up the drying process.

Hardwood floors

Condensation problem in hardwoods occurs in their interstitial cavities. Condensation takes place when the surface temperature falls below the dew point. This is the temperature at which water vapor starts to turn to a liquid. We avoid this problem by controlling airflow and humidity in the property while performing heat drying. Our team can use desiccant dehumidifiers to remove moisture. This equipment uses chemicals known as desiccants, which readily absorb moisture from the air.

When drying your home, our SERVPRO team can use portable heaters, the HVAC system, or air conditioners to control the temperature and facilitate drying.

After a water loss incident, SERVPRO of Fort Lee can restore your property to its pre-incident state. We respond fast to emergencies at any time of the day. Call us today at (201) 496-6024 for restoration services in Edgewater, Cliffside Park, and Ridgefield.

Unexpected Flood Damage In Your Edgewater Home

1/12/2020 (Permalink)

flood damaged home Proven technologies employed by crews with years of training and experience are why SERVPRO stands apart in the flood restoration business.

We Anticipate Unexpected Flood Damage: Why SERVPRO Is an Essential Resource in Edgewater

Just because flooding is considered a summer or fall challenge in Edgewater does not mean the winter months are free of risk. Flooding is a natural consequence of heavy precipitation and high winds. Along the Hudson, a storm surge can threaten at any time that the conditions are right. Our training and experience during the hurricane season translate into preparation for winter weather crises, why we receive calls to help with flooding 365 days of the year.

Water in All Forms Contribute to Flood Damage
The weight of sleet and snow and formation of ice dams top-side on your home can damage roofing and gutters, allowing moisture to enter your home as meltwater flood damage in Edgewater. Wind damage or snow-coated downed tree limbs or icy power lines can also rip holes in siding and break windows. Our crews arrive ready to secure your roof and exterior from the elements, why you do not need to hire more than one contractor for mitigation and remediation.

Cold Weather Increases Foundation Flooding Risk
As the precipitation swings from rain to sleet, ice, and snow, and back again, the frozen ground cannot absorb liquids. Your basement, lower levels, or crawl spaces are at high risk of water seepage as it pools around buildings. Our commercial-grade pumps and extractors are impervious to the cold or electricity shutoffs, powered by gas or onboard generators. The variety of weather-based complications we see currently explain why SERVPRO stocks each service vehicle with a broad range of extraction devices. Delay exposes your property to secondary damage, so we do everything in our power to have appropriate equipment in the truck.

Drying Challenges in Colder Weather
Colder temperatures do not negate the need for appropriate drying techniques after flood water extraction. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) training our managers and technicians receive covers the use of different types of dehumidifiers depending on the conditions. The variability temperature and humidity are why SERVPRO depends on a selection of refrigerant, low grain refrigerant, and desiccant dehumidifiers to get the job done. Only desiccant dehumidifiers work in temperatures below 33 degrees, and they are effective from 0 to 95 degrees and well-suited for confined areas like crawl spaces. Our certified technicians monitor the drying action carefully as alternatives to regular refrigerant models can overdry materials, causing cracking and shrinkage.

Proven technologies employed by crews with years of training and experience are why SERVPRO of Fort Lee stands apart in the flood restoration business. Call us at (201) 496-6024 to get the recovery started.

Why Fort Lee Homeowners have Trusted SERVPRO Restoration Services for Home Emergencies Since 2009.

12/31/2019 (Permalink)

A SERVPRO truck parked in a parking lot. Let us show you why SERVPRO should be your number one pick for Fort Lee.

We know exactly what you're Fort Lee community needs for restoration services.

As a proud provider of restoration services for Fort Lee, we understand how property damages can affect a customer's everyday life. Whether it be a water leak, fire, storm event or mold growth, our team is available for a professional, honest assessment, and remediation. SERVPRO of Fort Lee has operated here since 2009, prioritizing restoration with minimal disruption. At times, our duties may include bringing in third-party general contractors to perform repairs. You can trust us to complete the necessary paperwork and admin to be handed over to the insurance adjuster for a stress-free claim.

Water

Homeowners with apparent water emergencies in their Fort Lee home should decide to bring in professional restoration services for all but the most benign issues. In many cases, what may appear to be a non-emergency can cause long term problems. A slow leak, for example, can send water into cavities throughout your home. Without the proper care and attention, this buildup of moisture can result in discoloration of flooring, wall-paper, or paintwork as well as increasing the risk of a microbial growth issue.

SERVPRO uses a variety of detection and assessment equipment to ensure water damage in your Fort Lee home is dealt with comprehensively. We offer homeowners the option of specialist restoration services that may not be available with other providers. These services could include natural wood restoration as well as mitigating losses relating to electronic devices or essential household documents. Using moisture sensors and meters SERVPRO technicians can get a complete picture of the extent of water damage in your Fort Lee property.

Specialist restoration services could include controlling and reducing the moisture content of natural materials in the home. The wood used in floorboards and window frames can often become porous over time as sealants naturally wear. Introducing water to these natural materials can cause them to expand, resulting in cupping, warping, and buckling. SERVPRO technicians know that woods should hold moisture content no higher than 12%. Using dehumidification equipment alongside heated air movers can work together to reduce moisture content. Once the item is appropriately dry, we can often sand and refinish the affected area to a like-new condition.

Fire

Waking up to the sound of a fire alarm is an unpleasant experience. Evacuating the property safely before calling in the fire department should be prioritized above saving possessions. Once a fire marshall has cleared the property for entry, you may want to consider contacting a professional restoration service here in Fort Lee. While you wait for SERVPRO to arrive, you can begin mitigating loss by placing old sheets or coverings over the floor as well as opening windows. Opening windows can allow fresh outdoor air to replace odorous indoor air left behind after a fire. Covering the floor with old sheets can help to prevent falling soot from causing further fire damage to your Fort Lee home.

SERVPRO restoration services cover both the structure and contents of your home. When arriving on-site, your technician can conduct a quick pre-test of smoke residues and soot textures to determine the most effective course of action. We can remove charred materials and debris from the property while tagging possessions that we believe can be restored to a preloss condition. Although not all items in the home are salvageable after a fire, we work with a restore over replace method that could help to reduce your claim expense.

Thorough chemical cleaning is a common practice to remove stubborn soot and smoke residues before drying the affected area. Once a SERVPRO technician is satisfied that the area is clean and clear of potential odor-causing materials, we can set to work deodorizing the property to remove any remaining odor particles. Usually, our team deploys pellets in cavities around the home and ultra-low volume thermal fogging equipment to tackle odors. In severe fire damages, we may decide to bring in oZone generators that permanently alter the atmosphere and eliminate residual odors.

Mold

The types of property damages that usually cause mold are those related to moisture. If your home becomes exposed after a storm event or internal plumbing issue, you may begin to notice unpleasant musty odors in some areas of the property. These malodors are often followed by the appearance of mold damage in your Fort Lee home; starting in corners before slowly spreading outwards. Vigorously scrubbing at mold colonies can prove to be a sufficient stop gap. However, at some point, you should consider professional restoration services to prevent molds from regrowing.

To stop mold, you need to tackle it at the source. Our professional mold remediation technicians are an essential part of the team at SERVPRO. Equipped with the correct licenses and training, we can find the source of a mold problem and use a range of drying equipment, cleaning agents, and antimicrobial treatments to prevent it from becoming a constant issue. Laboratory testing can be an effective solution, but it is also time-consuming and rarely covered in a home insurance plan. At SERVPRO, we offer Fort Lee residents a practical solution to microbial growth issues.

Mold colonies form when airborne spores land in areas where there are food supply, moisture, and warm temperatures. Porous materials like insulation and drywall can be particularly susceptible to mold infestations and are rarely salvageable. SERVPRO restoration services can demolish infested materials, clean and dry the affected area before installing replacement drywall and insulation. In most cases, the odor is intrinsically linked to the infestation itself, disappearing once cleaning and drying are complete. However, in situations where odors persist, SERVPRO odor control technicians (OCT) can remove or mask the odor, causing particles until they naturally dissipate.

Storm

Storm-related events can be complex restoration services to deliver. When storm damage strikes your Fort Lee home, multiple issues need consideration. First of all, is what type of harm is caused to the property, whether water or wind-related. SERVPRO restoration services also need to consider what the potential losses could be and perform several vital tasks quickly to limit the impact of those losses. These could include securing the structure as well as placing temporary tarps over gaps in roofs, windows, or doors to seal them from the outside elements.

One storm-related harm to your property could be the presence of excess quantities of water. These can often pour into your property as a result of flash flooding or heavy rainfall. As a general rule, water causes more damage the longer it remains in your Fort Lee home. SERVPRO large loss teams are adept at removing water using a combination of pumping equipment and massive duty water extractors. We can set up drying equipment to tackle any residual moisture that may have been absorbed by carpets or other porous materials exposed to water. The proper drying procedure is essential to reducing the likelihood of mold or discoloration to fabrics and materials in your home.

It is not uncommon for a homeowner to need the help of third-party contractors to return their Fort Lee home to its preloss condition. SERVPRO has trusted contacts in the local area and can arrange for specialist repair work on your behalf. SERVPRO of Fort Lee is a local provider that is here to get your home back to its best after a fire, water-incident, mold or storm damage with minimal disruption to your everyday life. Commercial Flood Damage Fort Lee – Primary Contact

Whenever there is a flood from overflowing streams or rivers, or a storm has broken windows allowing water to penetrate a commercial building, most owners and managers are very stressed and worried about their business. The business may have to close for some time. Loss of revenue, employees out of work, and damaged contents are often their top concern.

SERVPRO understands that a commercial flood damage situation in Fort Lee may be considered a catastrophic event by many people. It is our job to make sense out of a chaotic situation and formulate a plan to complete a cleanup, provide board up services if needed, remove water and moisture and dry the building as well as the contents. Every hour lost has the potential to impact the bottom line of the company's income statement.

Assessment and Planning

Based on the initial information provided to our team, SERVPRO dispatches a project manager, crew chief, and technicians. Once the project manager or crew chief determines the environment is safe to begin work, our technician begins organizing and preparing for additional resources and equipment arriving on site. Every job is different, and it is essential to arrange the correct response to restore your commercial property as fast as possible.

Establishing Primary Contact and Decision Process

SERVPRO can work with a company's primary contact. Your company's contact should be someone who has the authority to make decisions that can facilitate recovery. For example, decisions about establishing a staging area in an unaffected area of the building can save a great deal of time. Equipment can be delivered and stored until it is needed. Building contents can also be stored in a staging area instead of offsite. These are for large loss types of emergency measures to mitigate flood damage.

There may be multiple people who may want to interface with our team, sometimes with conflicting instructions. It is essential to provide clear direction. Some Warning Signs of Flood Damage Issues in Cliffside Park

12/8/2019 (Permalink)

flood damaged living room with floating furniture Coming home to a flooded space can be a reason for despair. Pick up the phone and call SERVPRO for effective remediation services.

Risk of Overland Flood Damage in Cliffside Park: Why SERVPRO Sticks to Our Mission

The majority of the projects we complete in Cliffside Park involve water losses, whether because of plumbing mishaps, appliance malfunctions, or the overwhelming onslaught of overland flooding. Heavy precipitation or sanitary sewer backups can flood your basement or crawl space with inches to feet of contaminated water. A do-it-yourself response is inadequate during this kind of crisis, why we prioritize flooding mitigation and remediation.

Contamination Concerns Need a Professional Response

The potential to contract infectious diseases or risk exposure to dangerous chemicals when flood damages your Cliffside Park home cannot be ignored. As rain, sleet, or snow dumps substantial amounts of water on the pavement and the ground surrounding your house, it picks up industrial waste, landscaping chemicals, organic material including dead animals and their waste, and more. Overtaxed sewers can force human waste back into your basement. Pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and fungi can be present. The possibility of exposure to blood and fecal-borne diseases is why our employees suit up in personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow containment and lawful disposal protocols as we properly clean up the flooding.

Coursework in Psychrometry

Why SERVPRO facilitates advanced training in the science of drying or psychrometry is simple. A knowledgeable and experienced workforce focuses on the elements of flood damage mitigation and remediation we can control and manipulate. Ensuring that we follow safety protocols as we remove water, disinfect surfaces, and dry out spaces delivers results without compromising the health and welfare of the occupants and the structural integrity of the building. Best practices dictate we clear away dirt and debris along with water before sanitizing with EPA-registered antimicrobials. Then we balance heat and air movement to speed evaporation of absorbed moisture. Follow up with high-efficiency dehumidifiers removes the water vapor, enhancing the action of heated air movers as capable structural drying equipment.

A foundation in contamination containment, and the science of drying is why SERVPRO of Fort Lee fits the bill for flood damage recovery. Call (201) 496-6024 day or night to schedule an assessment and immediate implementation of a remediation plan.

Environmental Threats After A Fire in Edgewater

Environmental Threats After Fire Losses in Edgewater Homes

Air quality concerns are a common threat after fire loss incidents within Edgewater residences, even if the fire itself was not widespread and engulfing. Even localized disasters affecting little more than a single room can still present widespread and damaging airborne hazards such as soot, debris, smoke particulates, and other contaminants that must get addressed before the family can resume comfortable living again in the house.

As premier restoration professionals capable of addressing nearly all fire damage to Edgewater homes, our SERVPRO team has multiple strategies for overcoming these environmental threats in your residence. Once the fire has gotten extinguished, there is little time to waste to begin this cleanup and recovery efforts so that effects like soot do not become even more challenging to clean and remove. That getting said, a lower dispersion of these particles can also indicate a more concentrated presence of soot still in the air.

Soot is one of the primary threats present in the air once firefighters have extinguished the blaze. With its microscopic size, particles can get breathed deeply into the lungs and can present respiratory complications for those that do not have the appropriate personal protective equipment. Our SERVPRO team can utilize full-face respirators, Tyvek suits, and even SCBA equipment when necessary to keep our technicians safe as we assess the damage and begin the initial steps of mitigation.

We have multiple pieces of equipment capable of reducing the presence of these harmful particles – in many cases as small as .3 microns – from the environment. Air scrubbers can do much good for filtering out air contaminants, as the onboard HEPA filter can catch much of the residues and debris. Hydroxyl generators also present the filtration ability for larger spaces, but can simultaneously also harness a combination of water vapor and UV to deodorize the immediate area as well.

Keeping your family safe should always be your top priority after a fire, and our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team can help to reduce airborne threats to make the living space safe again as quickly as possible. Give our skilled professionals a call anytime that you need us at (201) 496-6024.

When we initially enter a building with flood damage, we disinfect the surfaces wherever floodwaters left contamination behind. As our water extraction team works and the decreasing water level reveals more, we might disinfect again.

Our experts work as a team to get things reorganized – tables, stands, and other furnishings need cleaning, damaged inventory from your vendors need a place for their secure disposal to protect the public, and undamaged items need protection from subsequent loss and damage. As we work, our Odor Control Technician (OCT) works with you to minimize odor with hydroxyl generators and masking agents.

Setting up box fans and smaller air movers in enclosed areas pull moisture out of concrete floors, walls, and other durable structures. Our desiccant machines extract the water vapor, so the air never becomes saturated. Porous materials like carpeting, already removed, make it easy for the air currents to get floors dry for the installation of new coverings.

Fighting odors continues later, near the time we complete the restoring of your building, to address any lingering odors. Re-disinfecting also takes place, ensuring that no microbes exist above normal threshold limits. SERVPRO technicians often use the same method of delivery for these two aspects of the restoration process. Fogging is highly effective because it pushes the droplets of the chemical agents into the smallest spaces. Other topical applications might not reach every location.

Because you might have hundreds of vendors, each requiring assistance to recover from a flood damage event, we want to assure you that we have the resources needed. With over 1700 franchises nationwide, we can handle everything for you and affected vendors. The cafeteria or other food areas also require cleanup, and we can handle this aspect of recovery, too.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee knows efficient methods that can reorganize any degree of disarray, mitigate damage before it worsens, and help get your flea market in Palisades Park, Undercliff Junction, or Fairview reopened fast. Contact us 24/7, year-round, by calling (201) 496-6024.

Best Water Extractor for Flooded Fort Lee Basements

10/6/2019 (Permalink)

A half kitchen, and half living room with standing water. SERVPRO will happily take over your Fort Lee flood damage.

Let us help with your Fort Lee flood.

Extraction tasks can vary in severity from heavily saturated flooring materials in Fort Lee homes to several inches or even feet of standing water. With structural breaches that allow for flooding, areas of your home can quickly become compromised and in need of efficient water removal services. Choosing the ideal equipment depends on the damage and the present threats, which get assessed when our team first arrives at your flooded home.

We have a full inventory of extraction tools and equipment from portable to ride-on machines that help to tackle flood damage in Fort Lee residences. Choosing which approach is necessary is often one of the objectives of our management team overseeing the thorough inspection of the property with the customer. Our estimator can devise a plan suited to the particular damage present and which extractor options best accommodates the condition.

Weighted Extractors

These tools are ideal for pulling saturation from carpeting and subflooring/padding when the carpet is not getting removed. In clean water damage, rapid drying and recovery solutions can ensure that carpeting does not need to get discarded, and weighted extractors can help it to dry more evenly and efficiently.

Portable Extractors

We have many portable options including sump pumps and light wands that can handle continuous removal of floodwater, but at a reduced volume to some of the other more powerful options in our extractor arsenal. These options typically require electricity, which means they require the presence of a generator in situations where the power has become disconnected.

Stationary Extractors

These are heavier units like our trash pumps that are less readily moved from one area to another without considerable effort. These units, which also include the truck-mount extractor in our SERVPRO Green Fleet, pull higher volumes of water from a damaged area of the home. These are ideal for significant loss situations with several inches to several feet of standing water.

Choosing the right extractor is, fortunately, something that most homeowners do not have to address on their own. By choosing SERVPRO of Fort Lee, you are choosing a team of qualified professionals capable of fast extraction and rapid drying for your home. Give us a call anytime at (201) 496-6024.

Our Experts Can Save Your Fort Lee Business After A Mold Infestation

Mold and Fungus growing on ceiling tiles inside a building Call (201) 496-6024 for an evaluation and remediation plan.

Remediation Of Mold Damage For Fort Lee Businesses Just A Call Away

Mold growth can cause panic for a business owner in Fort Lee. Visions of a long period of closure and loss of your hard-won reputation as a reliable provider of services and products are hard to banish. Our well-qualified mold remediation managers and work crews put your mind at ease. We have the training and the experience not only to abate your current mold nightmare but also to advise and consult with you on strategies to avoid a microbial infestation in the future.

Understand the Life Cycle of Mold
Mold damage in your Fort Lee laundromat is not evidence that your commercial is dirty or that your employees are not up to the task. Mold spores are everywhere in the environment, inside and out. They cause few concerns as long as they remain dry. When spores find and absorb water, they can grow and multiply into colonies of organisms. When we consult with you about a mold concern finding and eliminating the source of moisture is critical.

We Use the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Mold Remediation Protocol
SERVPRO remediation crews receive and use up to date training in the EPA strategies for mold remediation in commercial spaces. We pinpoint the mold location and then contain that area. Plastic sheeting provides the physical barrier, and we then add a negative pressure air scrubbing system. The air scrubber uses suction to pull and remove airborne contaminants through HEPA filters before venting to the outdoors as we complete the project.

SERVPRO Mold Removal Techniques
We scrape and brush off moldy debris attached to solid surfaces. If mold infiltrates porous structural materials, we might try gentle abrasive methods like soda blasting to clear the mold and incapacitate the deeply buried mold hyphae or “roots.” Some materials are too compromised to save, and we make decisions to remove and discard them after consultation with you and your insurance company.

Disinfection and Moisture Control Inhibits Mold Regrowth
SERVPRO uses EPA-registered antimicrobials to treat affected surfaces to kill remaining growth and limit the potential for a mold rebound. We work with you to reduce moisture availability, including arranging for leak repair and more efficient dehumidification in your commercial space.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee commits to helping you with the challenges of mold damage and reduction of the moisture that can cause microbes to multiply. Call (201) 496-6024 for an evaluation and remediation plan.

Summer Safety Tips!

The summer heat can get pretty intense. If you follow these tips, you will stay cool all summer!

With summer upon us, the heat and its effects can get pretty intense! However, we have a few tips and tricks in order to beat that summer heat and stay safe!

Always cover your windows. Covering windows will reduce the intensity of the heat in your home and will allow your home to stay cooler.

In addition to covering windows, reducing the amount of light will also reduce the amount of heat that is produced. It really does pay off to go green!

Finally, you can apply an ice pack or cold compress to pulse points for a quick cool down! These points include your neck, wrists, ankles, elbows, or even behind your knees!

Try these methods out and see out quick you will feel as cool as a cucumber!

Numerous animals were adopted and each shelter received a sizable donation. We have so many people to thank, like the vendors, shelters, and supporters! Make sure to keep an eye out next year for our next adoption day. We hope it's an even bigger turn out and that even more animals get adopted!

Preparing for a Hurricane

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

With hurricane season quickly approaching, the importance of being prepared increases. Follow these guidelines from the CDC to make sure you and your family stay safe in the event of a hurricane.

  1. Make a plan. It is important that even if there is no immediate risk of a hurricane or storm that your family has a plan in place in the event one occurs.
  2. Prepare an emergency food supply. The CDC recommends that you have at least a 3-5 day supply of food on hand. They also recommend foods that have a long storage life, require little to no cooking, refrigeration, or water, and that meet the needs of babies and pets.
  3. Prepare an emergency water supply. During an event like a hurricane, water supplies can become contaminated. Therefore, it is crucial that you have at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet.
  4. Get safety products. Things such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, blankets, and batteries are crucial to have in case the power goes out or a fire occurs.

Although you can never fully prepare for a natural disaster, if you follow these guidelines, you will be as most prepared possible. In the event you do encounter a hurricane or tropical storm, SERVPRO of Fort Lee is here to help. Give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

Atlantic Hurricane Season Begins

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

Hurricane season is upon us as Tropical Storm Beryl has ravaged Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The heavy rains have left at least 8,000 people displaced and 19 villages without communication, according to the Emergency Operations Center. Thousands are left without drinking water and without electricity.

It is terrifying when events like this occur and we are sure they won't be the last of them this season. Here at SERVPRO of Fort Lee, we are more than capable of handling the aftermath of such situations. When Hurricane Sandy struck our state in 2012, we helped people get back to living their lives as soon as possible!

We know the destruction and effects these storms can have. If you find yourself in that position, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024. We're here to help.

Space Heater Safety

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

When the weather begins to cool down, the use of things like space heaters will continue to increase. If used improperly, they can cause some serious damage. Luckily, there are a few ways to try and avoid this!

When using a space heater that burns fuel, like a kerosene heater, always use the manufacturer's specified fuel.

Another important idea to remember is to always turn of portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. If not, an unsupervised space heater can cause an unpleasant surprise.

The last tip to remember is to plug the space heaters directly into outlets, never into an extension cord or power strip.

By following these simple tips, we hope you are able to avoid a visit and call to us here at SERVPRO of Fort Lee!

Fire Restoration Process

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Fort Lee, one of the things we pride ourselves on is our process after someone experiences a fire. We work tirelessly in order to get their life back.

Our Process

  1. Call Us - Once we receive your call, we have a manager come and evaluate the extent of the damage.
  2. Emergency Board Up - We have our crew tarp any damaged portions of your roof, windows, or doors. This tarp creates a waterproof barrier and protects from break-ins.
  3. Mitigation - We extract any water from the property that might be left from the fire department.
  4. Pack Out - Once we have the approval from the insurance company, we pack the contents of your home and move them to our cleaning facility.
  5. Cleaning - We have our crews clean different parts of the home. Our crews can clean furniture, clothes, toys, electronics, and more.
  6. Pack Back - Once your home is ready, we have all of your belongings delivered back to you.

We take pride in this process and the success we have had in the past. If you ever find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024.

Grilling Safety Tips

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

With barbecue season upon us, we find more and more that tragedy can strike due to grills. Although it seems like something we use daily, without the proper precautions, it can be extremely dangerous. However, we have a few tips and safety precautions you can follow when deciding to grill.

  1. Only use grills outdoors. The use of propane and charcoal barbecue grills indoors can cause a fire in the blink of an eye.
  2. Place the grill away from your home as well as other things that may catch fire. If something goes wrong, your grill can ignite in flames and cause everything around it to as well.
  3. Always clean your grill. Sometimes, when the grill has a buildup of excess grease or fat from a previous barbecue, that can cause flames to jump up higher than normal. This can prove dangerous for you and the people around.
  4. Finally, never leave the grill unattended. Make sure that someone is always around the grill in the event that something does go wrong.

Even if you follow these precautions, tragedy still can strike. If you find yourself in that situation, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee. We're here to help.

What To Do When a Pipe Bursts

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

A pipe burst can happen at any time. When it does, people are often left unsure of what to do. Here at SERVPRO of Fort Lee, we are equipped to deal with that type of situation in the best way possible. While you wait for us to get to the scene, there are a couple of things you can do:

  1. Turn of the water to your house. If the water remains on, odds are the water will continue to leak or even flood. By shutting off the source, you are reducing the amount of damage done to your house.
  2. If the pipe continues to leak or drip, use a bucket to collect the water to contain the problem.
  3. If the pipe breaks in a wall or ceiling, switch off the power at the main breaker and avoid electrical fixtures or wiring. The mix of wires and water can be extremely dangerous.

We are trained to help and deal with these kinds of situations. If you ever find yourself in that place, give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

Categorizing a Water Damage

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

When our crew gets to a water damage, they identify the extent of the damage by categorizing the risk and immediate threat the water poses.

Category

Water is categorized to describe how dirty and unsanitary the water is.

  • Category 1 - The source of the water is sanitary and it does not pose a risk. However, if left untreated, it could change categories and become unsanitary.
  • Category 2 - The water is significantly contaminated and it can cause a human to become sick if they come in contact with it.
  • Category 3 - The water is the most unsanitary and contaminated and contains harmful pathogenic or toxigenic agents.

Water is categorized not only for the safety of the homeowner but for our crew as well. By categorizing the water, it also allows us to use the proper chemicals and equipment to deal with the task at hand. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024.

Classifying a Water Damage

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

When our crew gets to a water damage, we not only categorize it, but we classify the damage as well.

Classification

Water damages are classified based on the amount of water as well as the material involved in the damage.

  • Class 1 - This is the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. Only a portion of a room is affected or a larger area with minimal moisture absorbed. There is little to no wet carpet present.
  • Class 2 - This involves a large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. At least an entire room with carpet is affected. There is moisture in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 - This involves the greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. In this class, the water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpets, etc. are saturated.
  • Class 4 - This class relates to special drying situations. For example, some materials may require longer drying times and even different methods.

Classifying water damages is vital to our evaluation. It lets us know what type of equipment we need to use, the extent of the damage, and how long we can expect it to take. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024.

Fire Extinguisher Protocol

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

According to OSHA, the most common emergency small businesses must plan for is a fire. In fact, OSHA requires employers to thoroughly train workers not only on how to use an extinguisher properly, but also how to accurately asses a situation and determine when evacuation is the safest course of action. You never know when a fire is going to occur, so it helps to be prepared.

PASS Method

When using a fire extinguisher, the acronym almost everyone is popular with is PASS. PASS stands for

  • Pull the pin on the extinguisher
  • Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the base of the fire

By following this method and keeping the acronym in the back of your mind, you no longer have to worry about fires in the break room. If the situation does arise and you need help with the aftermath, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

Sewage Backup in a Commercial Building in Fanwood, NJ

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Check out this before and after!

A commercial building in Fanwood, NJ called us recently about a sewage backup in one of their bathrooms. We got a crew chief out to them the same day so we could see what we were dealing with. After evaluating the damage and identifying the course of action, we got a crew in there to begin the cleanup process. The after picture was taken only a few days after we got the call about the backup. The landlord was extremely pleased that we were able to clean up the sewage and water so quickly and that there was no odor left behind. This is what they had to say about our work:

"When one of our toilets backed up in our bathroom, to say we were shocked is an understatement. After doing some research, we decided our best bet would be to go with SERVPRO of Fort Lee. After our first phone call, I knew we had made the right decision. I am so glad I decided to give them a call. I don't think any other company would have been able to get the job done like they did. They truly are amazing!" - Andrew. F - Fanwood, NJ

Stay Warm This Winter!

10/27/2018 (Permalink)

As the temperatures begin to drop and winter closes in, it can sometimes be difficult to keep warm with the wrath of winter against you. However, we have a few tips to help keep you warm all winter long!

The use of area rugs can be extremely helpful in the winter. This simple addition helps to insulate rooms with hardwood or tile floors and regulates the temperature inside your home.

In addition to using an area rug, a helpful tip is to close the fireplace damper when the fireplace is not in use. By closing the fireplace damper, you are preventing the warm air from escaping from your home.

By utilizing these couple tips, you can make sure you and your family stay warm all winter!

Common Breeding Grounds for Mold

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold tends to grow in warm, dark, moist environments. It feeds off moisture and only needs about 24-48 hours to begin to grow. It is important that you regularly check these locations in your home to avoid mold growth.

  • Bathrooms - Mold tends to grow in bathrooms due to the increased temperature as well increase in moisture. Regularly check around your tub, shower, and sink.
  • Kitchen - Kitchens are also a popular place for mold to grow because of the increased temperature and moisture. Check by the sink as wells as behind the refrigerator and dishwasher.
  • Basement - Basements are common for mold due to the increased temperature and darkness. Check regularly.
  • Laundry Room - Like the bathroom, kitchen, and basement, laundry rooms are susceptible to mold because of the humidity and moisture from laundry machines.

Although these are common places for mold to grow, it is still possible for it to grow elsewhere. We recommend checking the entire house regularly. If you do encounter mold, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024.

Signs of Mold in Your Home

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

Often times, mold goes undetected in homes. However, there are a few signs that might point to mold as an issue in your home.

  • Smelling a Mold Odor - If mold is hiding in your walls or other places you may not see, the only clue that mold is there is the smell. If you think you smell mold, inspect your house immediately.
  • Signs of Water Problems - Water stains or discoloration on walls, floors, or ceilings in your home could show that you have a moisture problem. If you have a moisture problem, it increases the chances of you having a mold problem.
  • Seeing Signs of Mold - Although this might seem like an obvious one, sometimes we disregard mold and think it is dirt or soot.

If you see mold growing in your home, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee immediately at (201) 496-6024.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

How to Prevent Mold Growth

Mold is more than a pest; it can be dangerous. Mold in a home can cause health effects. In order to prevent these health effects and mold in general, we have a few tips to prevent the growth of mold in your home.

  1. Dry wet areas immediately. Mold needs moisture to grow. By drying wet areas immediately, it eliminates the surface for mold to grow.
  2. Make sure your home is properly ventilated. When a home isn't properly ventilated, appliances that produce moisture can also be the cause of mold.
  3. Keep mold off of household plants. Due to the moisture in the soil, plants are a perfect place for mold to grow and then eventually, spread. Avoid this by monitoring your plants and making sure they stay mold free.

Does Your Bergen County Home Have A Mold Problem?

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
