The area now known as Edgewater was once part of the Lenape tribe, sometimes referred to as Delaware. These Native Americans lived and prospered in the area as farmers, hunters, and gatherers for thousands of years. Once the European settlers began arriving, the Lenape started selling portions of their lands to the settlers; in this way, Vriessendael, the first modern colony in Bergen County, finally became the modern-day Edgewater got founded. Vriessendael got destroyed in 1643, three years after its founding, land disputes with another local tribe that also laid claim to the land. 

Edgewater's earliest industry was fishing, where shad were abundant as the fish migrated up the Hudson River from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. One of the first service businesses was set up by Etienne Burdett. He established a ferry service between the north border of Edgewater and Manhattan Island in 1758. The structure known as Burdett's Landing, where the ferry launched from, stood until 1899 and was invaluable for the movement of supplies and soldiers during the American Revolutionary War to get needed support to Fort Lee and Fort Washington. 

In the late 19th century, Edgewater underwent a massive change in direction and stopped being a fishing town and changed to being a much-in-demand resort town with several large hotels built to handle the influx of visitors. During this time, Burdett's Landing adopted the new name of "Old Stone Dock." 

The 20th century saw Edgewater morph into a genuinely industrial city with the establishment of numerous factories, and New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railway cut the Edgewater Tunnel through the Palisades, which connected the borough to the mainline. The town's proximity to the Hudson River's deepwater piers made it especially suited for shipping goods. As the industry continued to grow and spread, the hotels and reputation as a resort town faded. By 1920, the primary industries were producing:

• Oils
• Sugars for food production. 

Transitioning into a more residential community has been difficult as the borough still has marks from its time as an industrial force. The land from the old Alco Plant site got sold to a developer who wanted to build condominiums. Fort Lee was the Nation’s First “Hollywood.”

Today, Hollywood, California is most often considered to be the filmmaking capital of America, if not the world.  However, this has not always been the case.  In fact, little more than a hundred years ago, the town of Fort Lee, New Jersey was at the heart of the fledgling filmmaking industry.  This seemingly odd circumstance resulted because of at least four practical reasons.  First, Thomas Edison invented the movie camera in nearby West Orange and soon after established the very first movie studio there.  A second reason for Fort lee’s rise as a moviemaking mecca was its proximity to New York City and its large pool of theater actors.  Thirdly, the town was located in the country’s main commercial and population hub at the time.  Lastly, it offered diverse and easy to access landscapes for filming locations.

The Fort Lee Film Industry is Born

Fort Lee’s early status as the nation’s first major film-producing center largely developed because of the efforts of inventor Thomas Edison.  In 1886, Edison invented the kinetoscope, the world’s first motion picture camera.  Eventually, in 1893, the inventor built the first movie production studio, “Black Maria,” on the grounds of his West Orange workshop, a mere thirty miles away from Fort Lee.  After acquiring several patents related to his new invention and forming a movie production syndicate, Edison became the dominant force in the film industry for several years.  The movies of his companies, like the popular 1907 silent film “Rescued from an Eagle’s Nest,” introduced other would-be moviemakers to the area as a prime filming location.           

Benefits of Locating in Fort Lee and How it Fueled the New Industry

Located across from Manhattan, where the present-day George Washington Bridge crosses the Hudson River, Fort Lee was an ideal location for movie studios.  This was true for various obvious reasons, like:

• Fort Lee was near centers of movie making technology, making it more convenient for firms to acquire and maintain equipment
• The town was located just across the river from the nation’s largest and most famous theater district, giving studios easy access to a large pool of talented actors  
• It was in the heart of America’s largest population and commercial center, which put filmmakers closer to potential funding sources, made film production and distribution much easier, and gave firms access to more venues to showcase their movies
• The area around the town offered diverse landscapes, including various urban and natural environments, ideal for films depicting varied international settings   

All of these benefits were quickly noticed by other aspiring film directors and motion picture production companies that settled there between 1907 and 1918.  Famed directors like D.W. Griffith shot hundreds of movies around Fort Lee and, by 1918, eleven or more production studios had located there.        

The Notable Movies and Actors of the Fort Lee Era

At its zenith, the Fort Lee motion picture industry cranked out hundreds of films and hosted the talents of several notable actors and actresses.  Some of the more notable films from the era included:

• The Call of the Wild (1908), a Western melodrama about the relationship between an Indian brave and a white woman
• The Battle (1911), a picture set during the American Civil War
• Robin Hood (1912), a movie about Robin Hood and his merry men
• The Blue Bird (1918), a fantasy film
• Within Our Gates (1919), a theatrical response to D.W. Griffith’s controversial picture The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the earliest known film made by an African American

In these early days of motion pictures, it was not uncommon to see famed industry celebrities walking about in this community on the Hudson.  A few of the more recognizable A-list stars that passed through the area while working on movies were:

• Lionel Barrymore
• Lillian Gish
• Mary Pickford
• Will Rogers
• Rudolph Valentino

These particular actors and actresses were so influential that they defined the silent film era and essentially all of them are remembered today.

The End of Fort Lee’s Golden Age

Fort Lee’s time as the movie capital of the world effectively ended in 1918.  The frigid winter of that year, combined with coal shortages fostered by the First World War, made it difficult for local film studios to heat their facilities and continue production.  In addition to this hardship was the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 that forced production companies to close for weeks at a time.  Ultimately, all these problems motivated these firms to relocate to the Los Angeles area.

With summer upon us, the heat and its effects can get pretty intense! However, we have a few tips and tricks in order to beat that summer heat and stay safe!

Always cover your windows. Covering windows will reduce the intensity of the heat in your home and will allow your home to stay cooler.

In addition to covering windows, reducing the amount of light will also reduce the amount of heat that is produced. It really does pay off to go green!

Finally, you can apply an ice pack or cold compress to pulse points for a quick cool down! These points include your neck, wrists, ankles, elbows, or even behind your knees!

As a local business, we are always looking for opportunities to get involved in our community as well as expand our business. On June 3rd, 2018 SERVPRO of Fort Lee attended the 2018 Fort Lee Arts & Music Festival, presented by the Fort Lee Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs as well as the Mayor and Council of Fort Lee. When we found out we were able to attend, we were so glad we were given the opportunity and able to involve ourselves within our community. Plus, the event was super fun! There was something for everyone at this event like music, artists, kids rides, a Harley Davidson Bike Show, and other vendors. Every member of our team who attended said they had a blast. We can't wait to see what the next festival has in store!

Every year, we work with local animal shelters to try and give back to the community and each year, our success has continued to grow. This year, we had the most shelters and biggest turn out yet! Numerous animals were adopted and each shelter received a sizable donation. We have so many people to thank, like the vendors, shelters, and supporters! We would especially like to thank the American Legion Post No. 221 and all of the SERVPRO family that continued to work hard to help make events like these the huge success that they are! Make sure to keep an eye out next year for our next adoption day. We hope it's an even bigger turn out and that even more animals get adopted!

With hurricane season quickly approaching, the importance of being prepared increases. Follow these guidelines from the CDC to make sure you and your family stay safe in the event of a hurricane.

1. Make a plan. It is important that even if there is no immediate risk of a hurricane or storm that your family has a plan in place in the event one occurs.
2. Prepare an emergency food supply. The CDC recommends that you have at least a 3-5 day supply of food on hand. They also recommend foods that have a long storage life, require little to no cooking, refrigeration, or water, and that meet the needs of babies and pets.
3. Prepare an emergency water supply. During an event like a hurricane, water supplies can become contaminated. Therefore, it is crucial that you have at least 1 gallon of water per day for each person and each pet.
4. Get safety products. Things such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, blankets, and batteries are crucial to have in case the power goes out or a fire occurs.

• Class 4 - This class relates to special drying situations. For example, some materials may require longer drying times and even different methods.

Sewage Backup in a Commercial Building in Fanwood, NJ

Check out this before and after!

A commercial building in Fanwood, NJ called us recently about a sewage backup in one of their bathrooms. We got a crew chief out to them the same day so we could see what we were dealing with. After evaluating the damage and identifying the course of action, we got a crew in there to begin the cleanup process. The after picture was taken only a few days after we got the call about the backup. The use of area rugs can be extremely helpful in the winter. This simple addition helps to insulate rooms with hardwood or tile floors and regulates the temperature inside your home.

In addition to using an area rug, a helpful tip is to close the fireplace damper when the fireplace is not in use. By closing the fireplace damper, you are preventing the warm air from escaping from your home.

• Bathrooms - Mold tends to grow in bathrooms due to the increased temperature as well increase in moisture. Regularly check around your tub, shower, and sink.

• Basement - Basements are common for mold due to the increased temperature and darkness. Check regularly.
