SERVPRO Provides Water Damage Repair Services in Edgewater

Need Water Damage Repair and Mitigation Cleanup in Edgewater – Call SERVPRO®

Many residents of Edgewater assume water leaks can be repaired, surface water removed, and the remaining water inside walls or under floors allowed to dry naturally. Unfortunately, excess water penetrates porous materials, causing them to swell and lose structural integrity, e.g., drywall, hardwood flooring, and furniture constructed from pressed wood products.

SERVPRO can help mitigate this secondary damage, reducing the total water damage in Edgewater properties and repair costs caused by the initial leak. Our team deploys high-capacity pumps to remove visible water from basements and lower areas of your home. We use water extractors to remove water from:

  • Inside walls and difficult-to-reach areas
  • Between the hardwood floor planks,
  • Under cupboards and shelving
  • Inside ceilings of rooms under the site where the water leak occurred

Our high-capacity dehumidifiers and air movers reduce humidity levels, drying any of the above areas affected by water. Quick action by our team can mitigate much of the secondary damage before water and moisture can penetrate porous materials.

We use specialized equipment as needed to avoid further damage to your home.

  • Water extraction wands to reach inside crevices and difficult-to-reach areas.
  • Drying mats for hardwood floors to remove water and moisture from between the planks of hardwood floors.
  • Moisture meters to detect high moisture levels inside walls.

Homeowners must be careful to avoid slips and falls or electrocution around water. Avoid turning on lights, electronics, and other electrical devices exposed to water in your home. Remove wet contents from areas where dyes could leak onto furniture and area rugs, causing further damage. Turning air conditioning on can also assist in removing moisture from your home. Remove cherished heirlooms, expensive art items, and other valuables to a safe, dry place to avoid further damage to these items.

Signs of Walls with Water Damage in Fort Lee Properties and What to Do About It

SERVPRO Supports Fort Lee Residents with 24/7 Water Restoration Services

One of the most frequently encountered water damage in Fort Lee residential properties is a leaking pipe. A burst pipe may result in the sudden need for cleanup, but it can actually be less of a mess than a slow leak that went on within a wall for months until the deterioration was so severe that it finally showed the signs of wear from the water damage.

There are usually some small signs when a home has a slow leak in a wall causing water damage in Fort Lee. Homeowners that know what to look for can catch these early signals and potentially save themselves from a costly large-scale water restoration service. Things to look for on and around walls for clues water damage is occurring include:

  • A feeling of dampness or musty odors
  • Water stains on walls or visible mold growth
  • Paint bubbles or peeling paint
  • Warped or buckled sheetrock
  • Misshapen flooring or baseboards

Dampness and Musty Odors

If an area in the home, particularly a basement, has a musty odor or feels humid, take a good look with a watchful eye as there may be a yet-undiscovered water leak. As moisture absorbs into sheetrock or wood, it can produce a distinctive odor.

Water Stains or Visible Mold

Once moisture seeps into a wall, naturally occurring airborne mold spores may find a great new home if the temperatures (60 degrees F. or higher) are suitable to sustain their germination and growth. Water stains show up as darkened areas and show be immediately investigated to halt any further water damage.

Paint Bubbles and Peeling Paint

Constant moisture levels can cause paint to bubble on the surface of a wall. It looks like a balloon, and if it is popped, water may run out. Peeling paint (usually Latex-base) has lost its adhesion to the surface, often due to moisture in the wall. Neither surface can be merely painted over, and both situations are signs that the home needs water restoration services.

Warped or Buckled Walls and Ruined Flooring

Drywall does not handle exposure to moisture well. A slow leak can destroy a significant portion of a wall as the cardboard backing absorbs moisture, resulting in the need to remove and dry the interior wall void. Tile can lose adhesion from water running down a wall into the floor and subfloor. Hardwood flooring can show signs of damage by warping or nails in the boards protruding from the surface. This type of water damage should always get professional mitigation.

Getting Rid of Water Damage

Once signs of water damage are found, they should get cleaned up professionally as rapidly as possible. SERVPRO technicians can bring in professional-grade equipment that:

  • Find the areas with moisture
  • Extract and dry the affected materials
  • Handle any removal of water-damaged building materials
  • Conclude the service with a build back

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 handles all types of water damage restoration services for the Fort Lee community. The trained, certified technicians are available 24/7 to make it, "Like it never even happened."

Our Fast Water Removal Process Reduces Drying Time

There are countless ways that a home in Fort Lee can spring a leak inside. It could be a broken pipe, a water line that shook loose from a dancing washing machine, or a dishwasher overflowing because of the wrong detergent. If this happens to your family, you need an experienced water removal team.

SERVPRO’s specialists have experience in the various materials used to build houses in Fort Lee, making rapid water removal tasks possible. After pumping out standing water, additional tasks are involved in getting your home “Like it never even happened.”

Here are some of the different flooring types commonly found within area homes, followed by explanations of how we remove traces of water from each:

  • Wood flooring,
  • Tile over a concrete slab, and
  • Carpet over wooden underlay.

Our team responds to remove the water from not only on top of the wood planks but also underneath them and within them. We do this with our InjectiDry system’s floor mats, which combine heat and suction to pull moisture from the area covered.

The glue that adheres tile to concrete slab disintegrates if saturated in water, leaving your floor in pieces. We save what tiles we can and then find tiles to replace those lost. Air movers force air through the room, whisking moisture out of the pores in the concrete. When dry, we can reposition the tiles, leaving you with a beautiful floor again.

When carpet gets soaked, we often dry the carpet and the underlay in one step by a process called “floating’ the carpet. During this, we detach part of the carpet to force warm, dry air inside the newly made space. As soon as the carpeting and underlay register within normal limits for moisture content, our carpet technicians reattach the carpet and ensure no additional stretching is necessary.

The Perks of Opting for Professional Water Damage Restoration in Fort Lee

When you encounter a water loss problem in your home, your first instinct might be to deal with the problem on your own. While you can grapple with some problems in Fort Lee, others are complex and need professional assistance.

You may not have all the tools required to handle the water damage in your Fort Lee home effectively. As a homeowner, buying water restoration equipment can be uneconomical because you might not need to use them often. Besides, some water restoration equipment is expensive, and you may end up spending much money on it compared to the cost you would incur if you hired SERVPRO to restore your home.

If you are new to using cleaning tools, you might end up hurting yourself or causing more damage to your property. For instance, if you are not aware enough to eliminate all the moisture from your home, mold can grow in the affected areas.

After a water intrusion incident, the most affected areas of a home are usually the carpet, upholstered furniture, and drywall. Water can soak into floors, walls, and furnishings within a short time. We use proper techniques to remove water from affected surfaces and dry them out. Cleaning up after a leak requires using powerful pumps, air movers, and dehumidifiers.

It is crucial to dry water-damaged structures and contents as quickly as possible. Our crew does its best to remove all the water and moisture from home using advanced tools and techniques. We are knowledgeable about the science of drying (psychrometry) and can dry your home effectively. For instance, we can use Low Grain Refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers to reduce the relative humidity in your home. They may be more effective than dehumidifiers (desiccant) in drying hardwood flooring and other difficult materials.

Our SERVPRO team can also use portable electric heaters to direct heat to specific areas of your house. Heating materials like wood help speed up the evaporation of moisture. Our team follows the instructions or safety recommendations of the manufacturers of heating devices to avoid ruining the building materials and contents we are heating and to ensure the safety of the occupants.

Sometimes, water ruins flooring and walls to the point of needing replacement. However, we believe in salvaging most of the building materials. We know you chose your furniture, flooring, and other items for a reason, and we desire to enable you to keep them all. Our restoration techniques minimize tear-out, time, and expense.

A water intrusion incident can be a devastating time for any homeowner. Call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 to handle the problem.

Shower Drain Leaks in Edgewater Solved with Water Removal

Dry Up a Shower Drain Leak with Water Removal

Taking a nice hot shower after an entire day of yard work around your Edgewater home, you may not realize your shower drain is leaking all over the floor downstairs. When this happens, you need emergency water removal. SERVPRO is there when you need a professional team to restore your home, so it’s “Like it never even happened.”

In Edgewater, to protect homes from severe water damage, SERVPRO performs water removal services. Because damage from water happens very quickly, our crews also act and work fast to remove the water to get things dry, eliminating a lot of potential damage our customers’ properties might have sustained.

Between calling us and the time that we arrive, there are some things that you can do to help us perform water removal work even faster and more effectively. These are small things you can do, including:

  • Having any small furniture items removed out of the way,
  • If the air outside is warmer and drier than inside, please open up some windows and doors, and
  • Let others in the home know that the tub and shower are off-limits until further notice.

End tables, coffee tables, smaller chairs, and the like might not only stain your carpeting when wet, but they can leave deeper-than-necessary depressions in the carpet and pad.

Moisture moves from cool, damp areas toward warm, dry places because of its natural inclination for equilibrium. Clearing the air of any humidity gives us a head start on removing misplaced water entirely from your home’s living space.

Leaks like this are never self-sealing and require a licensed plumber. We work with several and can give you their information. As soon as the plumber has finished fixing the leak, we can start working on your ceiling and any other areas that require restoration, even as we continue drying the area.

Property owners can call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 for fast assistance with this and any other disaster.

How Long Does Repair From Water Damage Take In Edgewater?

SERVPRO techs work hard to restore your Edgewater home from any size of water loss

The crucial element in water loss cleanup and repair begins with how quickly the restoration efforts began. The long elevated moisture conditions remain in an Edgewater home, the more potential for costly damage and the need for replacement of ruined structural elements as well as possessions. Drying a home on your own can result in wet areas on carpet and other places weeks after the initial event occurred. This works against property owners because, during that time, pungent odors that need removal and mold, which require professional remediation, may invade the home.

What are Common Types of Water Damage Repair Needed?

When SERVPRO handles water damage repair in local Edgewater properties, it is not unusual to find that the property owners have already attempted some cleanup. One typical error that can cause more damage is using bleach and water mixtures to clean surfaces after a water loss. Bleach can ruin seals and finishes on many types of surfaces. Before cleaning any contents in the home affected by the water, the techs test the surfaces to determine the construction materials and the cleaning method that will deliver the best outcome.

New Jersey winters can be brutal, and homeowners that take the time to winterize their exposed plumbing tend to fare better than their counterparts that do not. When the water in a pipe freezes, it expands, and the result is a suddenly broken pipe that is gushing water.

Because the nature of water causes it to run throughout the loss area, it can be challenging to nail down every area with excessive moisture. Signs that water remains within the structure are:

  • Sheetrock that buckles or deteriorates
  • Floorboards with signs of warping
  • Loose, delaminated tiles
  • Musty odors that do not diminish
  • Water stains and visible mold

Can SERVPRO Restore Water-Damaged Sheetrock?

The trained and certified techs handle each water loss restoration job in the same manner, even though each situation is unique to the structure and contents within. The techs scope the property to determine how large the loss area is using their moisture detection equipment. These devices "see" behind walls and under flooring to determine if seepage occurred.

Sheetrock, in particular, attracts water and then pulls it upward as it absorbs moisture, also known as wicking. The reaction of the building materials is to buckle or warp. The proactive application once water intrudes on sheetrock is to measure above the present waterline and cut away the ruined area plus a few inches to eliminate any further loss. When making repairs, it involves cutting a piece of replacement sheetrock to fit in the space left open once the property gets dried. This attention to detail when performing controlled demolition actions assists homeowners in realizing less loss from structural repairs as the techs remove the minimum possible during cleanup.

Water with Sewage or Contaminants

Suppose a homeowner had put a large amount of drain cleaner down the pipes before it backed up or the water contained sewage. In that case, SERVPRO techs could handle the cleanup using their specialized extraction equipment and protective gear. This type of water loss needs careful handling and disposal. Additionally, surfaces getting cleaned often need a neutralizing cleaning agent to eliminate the caustic nature of some of the drain cleaners, and antimicrobial and antibacterial solutions get applied to sewage-laden water to make it safer during removal.

Most water damage cleanup requires odor control methods on some level, but it is almost always a must-have when the sewage is part of the issue. The techs have an array of ways to eliminate smells so that once the restoration services are over, there are no odorous reminders of the water loss.

SERVPRO Pays Special Attention to Mold

The techs undergo comprehensive training, and that includes not only a large number of facets for handling water damage but also second issues such as odors and mold. SERVPRO techs know mold spores are naturally occurring airborne spores present both inside and outside of properties. The process for remediation is a multi-layered approach to eliminate not only the mold colonies but also the circumstances they are thriving in the environment through the use of:

  •   Professional drying equipment
  •   Antimicrobial sealants
  •   Abatement tools for dried colonies

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 has a broad array of extraction and drying equipment to handle water damage repair and return your home to its pre-damaged condition.

SERVPRO has Multiple Extractor Options for Water Damaged Edgewater Homes

SERVPRO equipment in the kitchen of a home Kitchen water damage is a common occurrence that we typically see. Call SERVPRO 24/7 to assess the situation and provide effective drying solutions.

Why We Have Extractor Choices for Edgewater Homes

You might think that all extraction tools are the same, but there are varying degrees of power and precision to cater to specific water loss scenarios that threaten Edgewater homes. The advantage of having multiple choices for extraction is that we can provide a tailored water removal experience for each residence after a water loss and have the most efficient path to getting drying efforts started.

We have multiple options for water removal in Edgewater homes, most of which exceed the power and capacities of store-brand vacuums or portable pumps. While homeowners do have the capacity to purchase versions of many of the tools we use from home improvement locations, they often lack the same strength that our equipment does. We have a vast inventory of extraction tools ranging from light wands to extractor vehicles in our fleet, helping us to protect water-damaged properties better.

In most recovery scenarios, our SERVPRO team implements more than one extraction device on the same restoration project. For example, our electric submersible pumps and the stronger gas-powered trash pump function best when water levels are higher than 2 inches. Once the water has gotten reduced to this depth, we can switch to more focused tools like our light wands attached to wet vacs to finish the excess water removal. We can develop the right approach for the damage scenario based on the severity of the standing water and how widespread these effects have become.

We also have specialty extractor options that can help to address the oversaturation of areas like carpeting. With self-propelled weighted extractors and ride-ons, we can force moisture out from the padding and subflooring of carpeted areas to dry out these materials. When approached quickly enough, we can reduce the need for the reinstallation of new carpeting.

Water removal scenarios vary from house to house, but our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team has the equipment and skill to address them individually. We can customize a restoration plan suited to your home and get your property back to preloss condition quickly. Give us a call anytime that you need us at (201) 496-6024.

How Can I Prevent Water Damage Caused by Pipes Freezing in Fort Lee?

12/10/2021 (Permalink)

ice on outside water bib Protect your home in Fort Lee against frozen pipes. SERVPRO can help with advice, and if needed, water damage restoration

SERVPRO Can Help with Water Removal in Fort Lee

As many people know, water pipes inside your house are at risk of freezing when temperatures drop during the wintertime. If the H2O inside the lines freezes, it could expand, making a crack form in your pipes. Even a small quarter-inch break can cause hundreds of gallons of water to pour into your house in a short time.

Our SERVPRO technicians find that frozen pipes and ice damming in Fort Lee often occur when people leave town during the winter. While you are away for perhaps a holiday trip, it is a good idea to take steps to prevent your pipes from freezing. First, a good action during the winter, if you are leaving town or not, is to remove any fixtures hooked up to outdoor water valves, including hoses and sprinkler systems. When it gets cold outside, water could freeze inside your hoses, and the ice could spread into your water lines and cause a break. The EPA recommends winterizing your house from harsh elements.

If you know it will be cold while you are away or if your power goes out, it is a good idea to keep your faucets running. Leaving the hot valve slightly open and the cold valve opened up a little more can prevent freezing by keeping the water moving. If you are leaving town for an extended period during the winter, it is wise to drain all of your water lines. To do this, shut off your main water valves and open up all of your faucets until the water stops. Always maintain at least 55 degrees in the house.

If your pipes freeze and break anyways, do not worry SERVPRO can help you. Once moisture enters your house, we can provide the following to return your home to its preloss state:

  • Sewage Backup Clean Up
  • Repairing Damage from Burst Pipes
  • Water Removal and Clean Up
  • Basement Flooding Remediation

If you come home from a trip and see water inside your house, call SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024.

Getting water mitigation and emergency services started fast is vital for Fort Lee properties--Call SERVPRO

We are available 24/7 for water and fire damage events. Because We're Faster To Any Size Disaster, we have a clear plan in place to evaluate loss incidents and the impact of disasters on residences.

Thorough Inspection and Customer Consultation

Before water restoration companies in Fort Lee, like our SERVPRO team, can begin with water restoration work, we must evaluate and determine the best initial approaches to protect the structure and its contents better. Part of this process is conducted by walking through the structure and cataloging damage, while another factor involves prioritizing the customer's needs with urgency.

Emergency Services that Benefit Homes

There are specific emergency services that can benefit damaged homes right away. Beginning specific mitigation actions as soon as possible protects the structure from greater harm and lowers the length of time restoration ultimately takes. Some of the mitigative steps that we provide include:

  • Water Removal Services – Pooling water can heavily damage the structure, so we arrive with several extraction devices to remove standing water throughout the house.
  • Demolition – Structural integrity can be heavily compromised after prolonged water exposure. We have a general contractor license to help with controlled demolition needs.
  • Board Up – Preventing the situation from worsening often means sealing over the penetration points or structural damage with board-up and tarping services.
  • Temporary Power – Many water damage emergencies leave structures without sufficient power. We have trailered generators to supply enough electricity to run restoration equipment, heat, and temporary lighting.
  • Content Management – Moving content out of harm's way saves money and time. When damage exists, we can clean it on-site or off-site.

Our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team provides complete and comprehensive restoration and recovery solutions after severe water damage and flooding. We are leading experts in water damage restoration and repairs, and we are available 24/7 when you call (201) 496-6024.

What are Early Signs of Water Damage in a Fort Lee Kitchen

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

standing water on white kitchen floor Kitchens are frequent locations for water loss events. Should water invade your kitchen, call SERVPRO!

SERVPRO Techs Can Clean Up the Water and Leave the Fort Lee Kitchen "Like it never even happened."

Many appliances are connected to supply lines, such as the dishwasher and fridge in a Fort Lee kitchen. Along with the sink, any of these can be the central issue in a water cleanup job.

SERVPRO technicians recommend that Fort Lee residents look for water damage in their homes regularly. A small drip is far easier and less costly to repair than an entire wall softened by months of water exposure, and there is a strong possibility that mold remediation may be part of that equation.

Common Interior Leaks

Not all water damage incidents are sudden pipe breaks or sewage backups. Sometimes a supply line to a washing machine, dishwater, or faucet develops a slow leak, leading to more significant problems if it continues. Pipes run up walls and throughout ceilings; homeowners should be on the lookout for wet areas or discoloration that can indicate the presence of excessive moisture.

Structural Water Damage

The exterior homes take a beating from the elements, and the ability to keep water out of the house can get compromised over time. Soffits and the flashing around chimneys can wear down and allow rain and snowmelt into the home. Frequently this problem will affect the attic for a period before the water collects enough to announce its presence in a ceiling in the level below. That is why SERVPRO recommends homeowners inspect basements and attics regularly to ensure water is not entering the property. Other signs to look for are:

  • Wet or darkened walls or ceilings
  • Water on floors beside appliances
  • Warping of floors
  • Loosening of glue-down tiles

Fort Lee residents put their trust in SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024. The trained, experienced technicians are available 24/7 for any size or type of water damage restoration services.

Several Strategies Exist for Protecting Personal Belongings After Water Damage in Edgewater Properties

Water damages can result from several threatening situations, making the response of restoration professionals like our team vital to protect the exposed contents within the residence. We have several solutions for this need, which get determined by findings from the job scoping phase.

Relocating Contents to a Safe Space

One of the main stages of water mitigation for Edgewater homes after water damage is protecting exposed contents from more significant harm. Relocating content to new areas of the house unaffected by water damage can be a fast and low-cost solution to protecting what matters most to customers. The process itself follows simple steps:

  • Damage inspections
  • Finding a suitable dry space
  • Moving belongings quickly to secure location
  • Resuming water mitigation and cleanup

On-Site Surface Cleaning and Drying

Our team needs to provide cleaning and restoration services for damaged belongings within the house. It can be stressful for homeowners to relinquish their belongings for off-site cleaning, so strategies exist to prevent this outcome whenever possible. We have many service cleaning products and approaches to clear residues and dirt from damaged personal belongings or furniture.

Pack-Out and Move-Back Processes

One of the final ways to protect damaged contents in your home after water damage is to remove them to our nearby SERVPRO facility. Experienced cleaning technicians on our roster can individually treat items and furniture to surface cleaning and drying. When restoration completes in the house, the move back process places these restored items to their original locations.

Water mitigation is among the most critical actions our professionals take when damage occurs to local residences or businesses. From water removal services to content relocation, these actions determine the pace and cost of later restoration services. Our experienced SERVPRO of Fort Lee team is available 24/7 at (201) 496-6024.

Why Professionals are a Good Choice for Water Removal in Fort Lee

How Professional Water Removal Benefits Residences in Fort Lee

The first time a homeowner scrambles to respond to water damage in Fort Lee is a learning experience. Your immediate response might be to try to manage the influx of water from a plumbing break or appliance malfunction without expert help. Merely mopping up while increasing airflow by opening windows or setting up fans often falls short as a comprehensive removal solution. We have the training and the equipment to complete the job comprehensively.

Training Is the Foundation of Our Success

Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) trained managers and technicians use restoration industry best practices to conduct water removal in your Fort Lee home. We follow the research-based inspection and evaluation protocols to map out the dimensions of the water damage as precisely as possible.

Familiarity with Water Movement Is Key

Water can migrate from the original damaged site, seeping through cracks and joints between building materials. Fixtures like carpeting and padding can wick up moisture, carrying it far from the leak or overflow. Cavities and recesses between walls, beneath floors, and above ceilings can hide significant quantities of water. SERVPRO technicians are proficient in locating trapped moisture and in outlining the perimeter of the affected area. We use thermal imaging and a range of moisture detection devices to ensure no water goes undetected without removal.

Water Evacuation Must Be Fast and Thorough

Any pooled water deeper than two inches evacuates most effectively using submersible pumps. Diligent follow-up with appropriate extractors, wanded on carpets and squeegees on bare floors, is crucial. The SERVPRO team knows extracting is much more efficient than dehumidification in water removal scenarios. When we suspect water lurks in spaces between walls, we employ controlled demolition techniques to gain access for extraction and better airflow during the drying phase.

We Monitor Drying Progress Carefully

Water removal is not complete until saturated structural component moisture levels return to normal. We collect data from materials in unaffected areas of your home and use those numbers as goals while drying. SERVPRO crews employ air movers and heat to create conditions where water absorbed after the emergency evaporates into the air, captured by dehumidifiers for collection and removal. Periodic metering of moisture levels demonstrates our success as numbers recorded reduce to the goals established.

SERVPRO of Fort Lee offers highly qualified crews and state-of-the-art equipment for your water removal needs. Call us at (201) 496-6024 for service that makes water damage “Like it never even happened.”

SERVPRO Has Professional Equipment for Edgewater Water Removal Jobs

The area now known as Edgewater was once part of the Lenape tribe, sometimes referred to as Delaware. These Native Americans lived and prospered in the area as farmers, hunters, and gatherers for thousands of years. Once the European settlers began arriving, the Lenape started selling portions of their lands to the settlers; in this way, Vriessendael, the first modern colony in Bergen County, finally became the modern-day Edgewater got founded. Vriessendael got destroyed in 1643, three years after its founding, land disputes with another local tribe that also laid claim to the land.

Edgewater's earliest industry was fishing, where shad were abundant as the fish migrated up the Hudson River from the Atlantic Ocean to spawn. One of the first service businesses was set up by Etienne Burdett. He established a ferry service between the north border of Edgewater and Manhattan Island in 1758. The structure known as Burdett's Landing, where the ferry launched from, stood until 1899 and was invaluable for the movement of supplies and soldiers during the American Revolutionary War to get needed support to Fort Lee and Fort Washington.

In the late 19th century, Edgewater underwent a massive change in direction and stopped being a fishing town and changed to being a much-in-demand resort town with several large hotels built to handle the influx of visitors. During this time, Burdett's Landing adopted the new name of "Old Stone Dock."

The 20th century saw Edgewater morph into a genuinely industrial city with the establishment of numerous factories, and New York, Susquehanna, and Western Railway cut the Edgewater Tunnel through the Palisades, which connected the borough to the mainline. The town's proximity to the Hudson River's deepwater piers made it especially suited for shipping goods. As the industry continued to grow and spread, the hotels and reputation as a resort town faded. By 1920, the primary industries were producing:

  • Chemicals
  • Dyes
  • Oils
  • Sugars for food production.

Transitioning into a more residential community has been difficult as the borough still has marks from its time as an industrial force. The land from the old Alco Plant site got sold to a developer who wanted to build condominiums. Still, the ground had contamination from industrial chemicals, including PCBs, and this situation was not an isolated incident.

What Are the Consequences of Waiting for Water Removal in Edgewater Properties?

When an Edgewater home needs water removal, the sooner the process starts, the better. The time span between the damage to the home and the cleanup can increase the number of building materials and articles that cannot get restored. Professional biocides help lower the risk of bacteria build-up in water that aged before SERVPRO technicians were brought in.

SERVPRO technicians usually set up a cleaning station just outside the worksite to handle items that need stain removal or sanitizing. The most common types of cleaning methods include:

  • Immersion cleaning
  • Spot cleaning
  • Agitation

SERVPRO of Fort Lee at (201) 496-6024 relies on the certified, professional technicians for water removal needs in local Edgewater properties.

The Film Industry of Fort Lee.

1/19/2021 (Permalink)

A SERVPRO truck in front of a building. SERVPRO of Fort Lee enjoys their cities history and happiness.

Fort Lee was the Nation’s First “Hollywood.”

Today, Hollywood, California is most often considered to be the filmmaking capital of America, if not the world.  However, this has not always been the case.  In fact, little more than a hundred years ago, the town of Fort Lee, New Jersey was at the heart of the fledgling filmmaking industry.  This seemingly odd circumstance resulted because of at least four practical reasons.  First, Thomas Edison invented the movie camera in nearby West Orange and soon after established the very first movie studio there.  A second reason for Fort lee’s rise as a moviemaking mecca was its proximity to New York City and its large pool of theater actors.  Thirdly, the town was located in the country’s main commercial and population hub at the time.  Lastly, it offered diverse and easy to access landscapes for filming locations.

The Fort Lee Film Industry is Born

Fort Lee’s early status as the nation’s first major film-producing center largely developed because of the efforts of inventor Thomas Edison.  In 1886, Edison invented the kinetoscope, the world’s first motion picture camera.  Eventually, in 1893, the inventor built the first movie production studio, “Black Maria,” on the grounds of his West Orange workshop, a mere thirty miles away from Fort Lee.  After acquiring several patents related to his new invention and forming a movie production syndicate, Edison became the dominant force in the film industry for several years.  The movies of his companies, like the popular 1907 silent film “Rescued from an Eagle’s Nest,” introduced other would-be moviemakers to the area as a prime filming location.

Benefits of Locating in Fort Lee and How it Fueled the New Industry

Located across from Manhattan, where the present-day George Washington Bridge crosses the Hudson River, Fort Lee was an ideal location for movie studios.  This was true for various obvious reasons, like:

  • Fort Lee was near centers of movie making technology, making it more convenient for firms to acquire and maintain equipment
  • The town was located just across the river from the nation’s largest and most famous theater district, giving studios easy access to a large pool of talented actors
  • It was in the heart of America’s largest population and commercial center, which put filmmakers closer to potential funding sources, made film production and distribution much easier, and gave firms access to more venues to showcase their movies
  • The area around the town offered diverse landscapes, including various urban and natural environments, ideal for films depicting varied international settings

All of these benefits were quickly noticed by other aspiring film directors and motion picture production companies that settled there between 1907 and 1918.  Famed directors like D.W. Griffith shot hundreds of movies around Fort Lee and, by 1918, eleven or more production studios had located there.

The Notable Movies and Actors of the Fort Lee Era

At its zenith, the Fort Lee motion picture industry cranked out hundreds of films and hosted the talents of several notable actors and actresses.  Some of the more notable films from the era included:

  • The Call of the Wild (1908), a Western melodrama about the relationship between an Indian brave and a white woman
  • The Battle (1911), a picture set during the American Civil War
  • Robin Hood (1912), a movie about Robin Hood and his merry men
  • The Blue Bird (1918), a fantasy film
  • Within Our Gates (1919), a theatrical response to D.W. Griffith’s controversial picture The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the earliest known film made by an African American

In these early days of motion pictures, it was not uncommon to see famed industry celebrities walking about in this community on the Hudson.  A few of the more recognizable A-list stars that passed through the area while working on movies were:

  • “Fatty” Arbuckle
  • Lionel Barrymore
  • Lillian Gish
  • Mary Pickford
  • Will Rogers
  • Rudolph Valentino

These particular actors and actresses were so influential that they defined the silent film era and essentially all of them are remembered today.

The End of Fort Lee’s Golden Age

Fort Lee’s time as the movie capital of the world effectively ended in 1918.  The frigid winter of that year, combined with coal shortages fostered by the First World War, made it difficult for local film studios to heat their facilities and continue production.  In addition to this hardship was the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 that forced production companies to close for weeks at a time.  Ultimately, all these problems motivated these firms to relocate to the Los Angeles area.

As you can see, unforeseen circumstances can upset the plans of anyone.  This is why the water damage mitigation experts at SERVPRO of Fort Lee would like to remind you that we are always ready to deal with your water-related issues.  Call us anytime at (201) 496-6024 for assistance.

Meeting Water Damage Restoration Needs of Fort Lee

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO new equipment Water damage in Fort Lee will be a hassle in your home. Call SERVPRO with their experienced technicians to use new water mitigation techniques.

In New York City's metropolitan area, restorers have much to protect after water damages.

Fort Lee is a city that has almost consistently grown and evolved since its origins as one of the new settlements to take root and thrive after the American Revolution. From Bergen County being one of the catalysts for the motion picture industry to the classic Palisades Amusement Park that ran for 73 years beginning in 1898, Fort Lee has been home to many of the country's most well-known places and events. When disasters like water damage occur, protecting this history becomes the job of our experienced SERVPRO technicians.

Gateway to New York City

One of the significant attributing factors to the growth and expansion of Fort Lee after the turn of the 20th century was the creation of the George Washington Bridge. This was a substantial undertaking for both states, as it was constructed from the branch of the government agency overseeing the ports of both New York and New Jersey. This double-decked suspension bridge crosses the Hudson River and unites Fort Lee to Manhattan. The bridge was initially dedicated in 1931 and currently supports the traffic of more than 100 million vehicles a year.

The creation and heavy use of this bridge would see a growth in population for Fort Lee and its surrounding areas. Those that wanted the allure of New York City no longer had to stay within its limits to commute easily. In New Jersey, residential neighborhoods are often less crowded and less expensive for more extensive square footage in a home. The bridge continues to be a gateway connecting the still growing Fort Lee community with the Big Apple.

The Population Boom

Though highly developed now, much of this area in New Jersey used to be rural properties. Before a tremendous industrial draw began overtaking some of the developments throughout eastern New Jersey, places like Fort Lee would not see quite its peak population numbers as it does today. Even with the construction of the George Washington Bridge, which connects the city to downtown Manhattan, the population only grew slightly.

The creation and construction of multiple high-rise towers designed exclusively for living space provided the uptick in the population that modern Fort Lee residents recognize. During the 1960s and 70s, a substantial population boom was attributed to the production of these high-rise apartment buildings that could support hundreds of families within a single structure. That development continues today as an allure for those looking for more affordable accommodation without living in the city of New York.

High-Rise Structures

These structures present a need for specialized equipment and approaches when water or fire damage exists several stories in the air. As it stands, there are nine structures in Fort Lee that exceed 300 feet in height, most of which are apartments and condominiums for residents. One such structure is the formidable dual tower design of The Modern complex. This structure stretches 47 floors into the sky, with each tower having an equal half of the more than 900 apartments – many with panoramic views of the New York City skyline or the Hudson River.

While many of the other high-rises might not measure up to the nearly 500 feet of each of The Modern towers, many older constructions served as foundational blocks for the skyscrapers recently built. In 1975, the city finalized the construction of The Plaza and The Colony, twin structures that stand roughly 350 ft and feature 32 stories of apartment units.

Cultural and Historical Centers

With so many historical figures passing through Fort Lee and even encamping within its region, it is no great surprise to learn that the name of the city originates from one of the American Revolution generals, Charles Lee. His service to the Continental Army would be memorable, enough for his service to be commemorated by the town's naming, Despite also being involved in one of the worst retreats of the revolution at the Battle of Monmouth. Our region's role throughout the growth and adaptation of a new nation can be seen at the Fort Lee Museum.

Those wanting to better understand the conditions and the quarters for the Continental Army could also visit areas like the Ft. Lee Soldiers Cabin. This is part of a greater historic park on protected grounds of the city, which can showcase many exhibits of old weaponry, accommodations, and tools of the time period to showcase the hardships of colonial Fort Lee.

SERVPRO Restoration and Water Damage Repairs

There is an urgency to address water disasters when they happen, precisely because of how quickly these effects can spread throughout Fort Lee homes. Mitigation is one of the most critical phases of protecting property and contents, and this begins as soon as our technicians and building trade professionals arrive. As you might expect, extraction is one of the critical elements of mitigation, specifically because of how threatening standing water can be too sensitive materials that absorb moisture and can begin to deteriorate almost immediately.

Water damage repairs for Fort Lee homes often involve compromised portions of plumbing that burst or degrade over time. With freezing being such a common occurrence during harsh winter months along the Hudson, homeowners can remain at risk of pipe bursts. Repairing damaged structural elements and compromised pipes and fixtures fall to the competent building trade professionals on our roster that arrive with our emergency response team.

Reconstruction is a specific need after substantial water loss incidents, making our general contractors' experience and available expertise valuable to restoration projects. While controlled demolition and repairs happen among the mitigation tasks necessary, the property's build-back is a step taken following the bulk of the restoration phase.

As challenging as water damage incidents might be to overcome, involving our SERVPRO of Fort Lee team provides homes with a comprehensive solution, including restoration and repairs. Give our experienced team a call at (201) 496-6024.

My Carpet is Soaking Wet

Imagine waking up in the morning only to discover a pipe burst overnight and water is covering your whole living room.  Your furniture is absorbing water by the minute, and you can already see the water damage on your wooden tables and some on the hem of your curtains.  Even though your day is already off to a poor start, once you contact a professional water restoration service, you can breathe easier knowing that the problem is being addressed expediently.  A reputable company makes all the difference in minimizing the exposure time for your flooring and furniture as well as anticipate future risks.

If your home in Fort Lee suffers from water damage, SERVPRO is your greatest ally in bringing your home back to normal.  Our competent staff can address water situations of varying sizes and scopes, and we arrive at your home ready to take action.  Our theoretical understanding of the interaction of water and different materials, as well as our hands-on experience, prepare us to develop a clear action plan for each affected area in your home.

Many homeowners despair when they realize their carpets are wet, and they jump to the conclusion that replacement is the only solution.  Although this is true in many cases, our SERVPRO staff may recommend in-place drying for your home. At its most basic level, in-place carpet drying involves the circulation of air and the use of dehumidifiers to extract water damage from the carpet and its pad.  To some, it may appear cumbersome due to the amount of equipment necessary to implement this technique, as well as the extended time it requires. However, the benefit of preserving your carpet and avoid moving furniture around may outweigh the nuisance. Our SERVPRO technicians can help determine whether in-place drying is a reasonable course for your home or if risk factors such as extended water exposure or evidence of mold, make it unsuitable.

Place your trust in SERVPRO of Fort Lee for your water removal needs.  Call us at (201) 496-6024 as soon as the emergency occurs and let us be your ally through the restoration process.  Like you, we want to leave your home, “Like it never even happened.”

Get Fast And Efficient Water Damage Restoration In Your Fort Lee Residence

Water damage does not always result from significant leaks. Small leaks that might go undetected for an extended period can ruin your carpeting or cause electrical faults, warping of wood flooring, swelling of drywall, or sagging of ceilings. If you do not perform restoration on time, you can incur costly repairs, or your home might be unsafe to live in.

The small leaks in your property could be from a cracked tile in the bathroom or a malfunctioning dishwasher, washing machine or water heater. Regardless of what caused the water damage in your Fort Lee residence, SERVPRO can handle the problem. Our technicians can complete any restoration project proficiently.

Water damage poses many dangers in a home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, above-average humidity levels are enough to cause a hazardous environment for the occupants of a home. The recommended moisture levels are around 40 to 60 percent. Anything above that creates a conducive environment for dangerous toxins and mold growth. Mold can cause health effects to the occupants of a property.

One of the most significant steps in water damage restoration is the drying process. If the drying process is not properly undertaken, the property can sustain more water damage. During the drying process, it is possible to face condensation problems. Condensation is the process in which water vapor turns into a liquid. It prevents efficient drying and can also cause secondary damage to your property. Therefore, we note any issues that may arise courtesy of condensation and resolve them professionally. Condensation can happen in:

Wall cavities

From the years we have been in the restoration industry, we have learned that when restorers apply heat on wall surfaces, condensation takes place in the wall cavities. To avoid such a problem, we can use a venting box fan to increase the airflow in the property. Increasing air circulation also speeds up the drying process.

Hardwood floors

Condensation problem in hardwoods occurs in their interstitial cavities. Condensation takes place when the surface temperature falls below the dew point. This is the temperature at which water vapor starts to turn to a liquid. We avoid this problem by controlling airflow and humidity in the property while performing heat drying. Our team can use desiccant dehumidifiers to remove moisture. This equipment uses chemicals known as desiccants, which readily absorb moisture from the air.

When drying your home, our SERVPRO team can use portable heaters, the HVAC system, or air conditioners to control the temperature and facilitate drying.

After a water loss incident, SERVPRO of Fort Lee can restore your property to its pre-incident state. We respond fast to emergencies at any time of the day. Call us today at (201) 496-6024 for restoration services in Edgewater, Cliffside Park, and Ridgefield.

What To Do When a Pipe Bursts

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

A pipe burst can happen at any time. When it does, people are often left unsure of what to do. Here at SERVPRO of Fort Lee, we are equipped to deal with that type of situation in the best way possible. While you wait for us to get to the scene, there are a couple of things you can do:

  1. Turn of the water to your house. If the water remains on, odds are the water will continue to leak or even flood. By shutting off the source, you are reducing the amount of damage done to your house.
  2. If the pipe continues to leak or drip, use a bucket to collect the water to contain the problem.
  3. If the pipe breaks in a wall or ceiling, switch off the power at the main breaker and avoid electrical fixtures or wiring. The mix of wires and water can be extremely dangerous.

We are trained to help and deal with these kinds of situations. If you ever find yourself in that place, give us a call at (201) 496-6024.

Categorizing a Water Damage

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

When our crew gets to a water damage, they identify the extent of the damage by categorizing the risk and immediate threat the water poses.

Category

Water is categorized to describe how dirty and unsanitary the water is.

  • Category 1 - The source of the water is sanitary and it does not pose a risk. However, if left untreated, it could change categories and become unsanitary.
  • Category 2 - The water is significantly contaminated and it can cause a human to become sick if they come in contact with it.
  • Category 3 - The water is the most unsanitary and contaminated and contains harmful pathogenic or toxigenic agents.

Water is categorized not only for the safety of the homeowner but for our crew as well. By categorizing the water, it also allows us to use the proper chemicals and equipment to deal with the task at hand. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024.

Classifying a Water Damage

7/7/2019 (Permalink)

When our crew gets to a water damage, we not only categorize it, but we classify the damage as well.

Classification

Water damages are classified based on the amount of water as well as the material involved in the damage.

  • Class 1 - This is the least amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. Only a portion of a room is affected or a larger area with minimal moisture absorbed. There is little to no wet carpet present.
  • Class 2 - This involves a large amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. At least an entire room with carpet is affected. There is moisture in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 - This involves the greatest amount of water, absorption, and evaporation. In this class, the water may have come from overhead. Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpets, etc. are saturated.
  • Class 4 - This class relates to special drying situations. For example, some materials may require longer drying times and even different methods.

Classifying water damages is vital to our evaluation. It lets us know what type of equipment we need to use, the extent of the damage, and how long we can expect it to take. If you find yourself in this situation, give SERVPRO of Fort Lee a call at (201) 496-6024.
